Maple Syrup Production
Nationally, maple syrup production in 2013 totaled 3.25 million gallons, up 70 percent from 2012. In 2012, prevailing high temperatures limited sap flow. The number of taps is estimated at 10.6 million, 8 percent above the 2012 total of 9.77 million. Yield per tap is estimated to be 0.308 gallons, up 58 percent from the previous season’s revised yield. All States showed an increase in production from the previous year. Cool temperatures in the early spring months delayed budding of maple trees which contributed to a longer season of sap flow than last year. The earliest sap flow reported was January 1 in New York. The latest sap flow reported to open the season was February 15 in Wisconsin. On average, the season lasted 37 days, compared with 24 days in 2012. The 2012 U.S. average price per gallon was $39.10, up $1.20 from the 2011 price of $37.90. The U.S. value of production, at $74.6 million for 2012, was down 30 percent from the previous season.

production in 2013 totaled 2.69 million gallons, up 59 percent from 2012’s production of 1.69 million gallons. Vermont remained the top Maple State in the Northeastern Region and the Nation, producing 40.6 percent of the United States’ maple syrup. Taps in Northeastern Region totaled 8.90 million, up 7 percent from last year and accounted for 84 percent of the Nation’s maple taps.

Northeastern Region (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania and Vermont): The Northeastern Region’s maple syrup

The 2013 maple syrup season in the Northeastern Region was considered mostly favorable. The long 2013 maple syrup season offered several instances of warm days and cool nights, resulting in a significant increase in the Northeastern Region’s maple syrup production. Producers did report an extended freeze period in March. A very few number of operations reported that the weather was too warm. The number of taps was up in each of the states in the region, except for Maine which was unchanged from last year. The season started and ended later for most of the maple syrup producers compared to last year. The average season lasted two weeks longer in the Northeastern Region than it lasted in 2012. The maple season lasted 5 to 6 weeks in average with several reports of sap flowing for over 2 months. Persistently cool temperatures in March and April delayed budding of maple trees, a welcomed relief after record-breaking heat waves ruined last year’s season for most producers.

Northeastern Region 2012 PRICES AND SALES: The average equivalent price per

gallon for maple syrup varies widely across the Region depending on the percentage sold retail, wholesale, or bulk. The 2012 all sales equivalent price per gallon in Connecticut averaged $63.40, down $9.60; Maine averaged $33.00, down $1.00; Massachusetts averaged $51.50, down $5.50; New Hampshire averaged $52.50, up $3.50; New York averaged $43.50, up $4.40; Pennsylvania averaged $39.40, down $0.60 and Vermont averaged $35.50, up $0.50. The high percentage of bulk sales in Vermont and Maine kept average prices below the other States.
