1. Explain the concept of arête. Use specific examples from your own life to illustrate your definition. Arete to be defined is a Greek term which in general terms translates to the word virtue. Arete when relating to people means that one should be the best they can be or to reach your highest human potential for example like working as hard as you can in college and being as studious as you can be to ultimately be as successful as you can be in the real world. The term is not gender specific and implies a human centered universe in which human actions are of paramount importance, the world is a place of conflict and difficulty. Human value and meaning is measured against individual effectiveness in the world. Arte in ancient greek culture was courage and strength in the face of adversity and it was to what all people aspired. Arete in my life could be when I found someone’s wallet laying in McDonalds parking lot. I was a good citizen and took the wallet to the police station without taking anything out of it.
2. Explain the concept of phronesis. Use specific examples from your own life to illustrate your definition. Phronesis is characterized as the “wisdom to take counsel, to judge the good and evils and all things in life that are desirable. It mainly points at the human capacity for practical judgment. Aristotal called phronesis “practical wisdom”. By lacking pheronesis a person can fall short of virtue. An example in my life when I lacked moral wisdom was when I was a child. One time back in grade school I had good

...In 2006, Coke started having more problems with its bottlers. Fifty-four lawsuits were filed trying to stop Coke from expanding its Powerade deliveries straight to Wal-Marts warehouses. Coke was trying to cut out the way things had been done for many years. Coke wanted to skip having to pay people to directly deliver their products to each individual store. This way they could drop shipments of at the warehouses and have the company selling the Coke product stock the shelves for them. (Ferrell et al., 2008, p. 314) Once again, Coke would face negativity in eyes of the media and all over the world. G. International Problems One of the most major events Coke faced was trouble with their international unions. Explaining this best is in an article I summarized by Sarah Cairns. Something that started out as a simple class project on activism at McMaster University turned into a campaign over the last year to protest McMaster’s exclusivity contract with Coca Cola. In an interview quoted below goes as follows…“Nine of us worked on it… we planned a demonstration, and from there it’s just grown,” remembers Michelle Peek, a co–coordinator at McMaster’s Campus Choice. Initially, the students were concerned with the fact that the exclusivity contract prevented freedom of choice on campus. “We looked at what they’re teaching us and what universities are for,” explains Adam Tracey, also from Campus Choice. “What I think (universities are for) is critical thinking, research...

...Iana de Castro TECNPRE 11319305 Nov. 6, 2015 Reflection paper on the The Corporation documentary Being an enthusiast of anything that concerns the capitalist and corporate theme and its societal effects, the documentary, The Corporation (2013), did a great job in piquing my interest despite it being a lengthy viewing. In the documentary, it was shown how corporations evolved and its inner workings as of late. In the passage of time, it became more and more common that corporations be treated as actual human beings as these had the same legal rights. It was found in the Fourteenth Amendment in the United States Constitution how this was so. The entity of the corporation had earned too much breadth and power as time passed. One of my musings regarding the corporations of today involves its superiority over the masses. These corporations basically control the public and have the power to manipulate them into doing whatever they want to—in most cases—render the most profit. In the documentary, one of the most memorable parts was when the corporation was likened to a psychopath—one with absolute disregard of others’ feelings. One who would only first realize this would be scared out of his/her wits but because this is one of the things I like to tackle with my best friend, I have come to accept the hard truth that the corporations run the world. In the current state of the world, it can be observed that most people who adopt a corporate lifestyle...

...Recognizing and addressing mental blocks. Adam’s Perceptual block. * Saturation or Information overload. When you are faced with a problem and begin to gather information and things start to become confusing. If you gather to much information, some of it may not be relevant or will help you get any closer to coming up with a solution. * A solution for this could be to take a risk and come up with an idea from the information you received and go with it and try to solve it. Adams Emotional block. * Fear of taking a risk. You may not want to solve a problem because you are afraid of what the outcome will be. An example of fear of risk taking would be if you are at your job and you are afraid to go out of your way to do more because you’re afraid because if you fail you might get fired or disciplined. Another example of risk taking would be if you want to go sky diving but you are afraid that you could get either seriously injured or killed. * A solution for this would be to just take a risk, outline what the worst possible outcome could be and how you would deal with it. Higgins hindrances to generating alternatives as given on. * Getting “hooked” on the first solution that comes to mind. When you are given a problem and you stay with the first solution instead of taking the time and doing more research and other come up with other possibilities. When I tried to go to work and I got in my truck and tried to start it up and it wouldn’t start I automatically...

...Amaryliss A. Biaño BSBA – 3 BA1 TTH 5:01-6:31pm CASE STUDY (Semi-final) KOOKABOORA CONTAINER CORPORATION: Maybe Tomorrow When the Clark Special Economic Zone in Pampanga opened its gates for investors in light and medium industries, the Kookaboora Container Corporation (KCC) was among the first ten companies to locate in the zone’s premises. KCC manufactures containers of various shapes and sizes which are used by manufacturers of industrial chemicals, food products, cooking oil, motor oil, and others. The production department of KCC is headed by Engr. Nicolas Aisporna, a licensed mechanical engineer. He is a tickle for discipline. When even small mistakes happen in his department, he personally calls the offending employees and metes the appropriate penalty. As a result, his department was judged best in efficiency. Very minimal wastages in materials and time were recorded by the department. Under the direct supervision of Engr. Aisporna are 10 supervisors who are graduates of engineering courses and with an average of three years work experience. Ten workers report to a supervisor. All of the workers are high school graduates. All employees including the supervisors and the workers are paid on a monthly basis. The workers, however, are required to produce a minimum number of units per day. During the slack seasons, workers are engaged only from 50% to 75% of their normal working hours due to lack of sufficient job orders. No worker is laid off by the company...

...Dada Odunayo. Ethics for Accountants (Dr Pitre) A) Research discussion on Cooperation Review of journal article: The Tools of Cooperation and Change by Clayton M. Christensen, Matt Marx, and Howard H. Stevenson October 2006 Christensen, Matt Marx, and Howard H. Stevenson in this article described and emphasized on the importance of cooperation to managers of an organization. In this article they further described that managers have the sole responsibilities in directing and making use of the talents of their employees to further achieve the main goal of the organization, even though it might be complicated. They further gave an example depicting the consequences of lack of cooperation by using the incidence of Procter and Gamble 1999 where the new promoted manager announced they were changing the company’s culture. This failed as a result of the company not inducing its employee’s cooperation. B) Personal Views Judging from this article, Cooperation tools fall into four major categories: power, management, leadership, and culture. Choosing the right tool, would require assessing the organization along two dimensions: the extent to which people agree on what they want and the extent to which they agree on cause and effect, or how to get what they want. Co-operation from my own point of view means living in accord with others. People should be helpful to one another. They should accept other people’s point of view, if it is mutually...

...Threadless.com Clothing is a huge industry and a daunting prospect for a new entrant. On the one hand there are large players with scale economies, sophisticated logistics, low labour cost assembly operations and advanced retail and distribution networks. On the other there are boutique, fashion-led houses with an emphasis on design, quality and customisation – and with a clientele prepared to pay high prices for these attributes. Yet a small US start-up – Threadless.com – has confounded those skeptics who felt there wasn’t room for any new player, let alone one with no prior experience of the industry. Co-founders Jake Nickell and Jacob DeHart started the company with $1,000 in seed money in 2000 although the idea was still more about building a web community than a major clothing business. "It was just a hobby, a way for people to get their artwork out," Nickell commented in a recent interview. By 2002, the hobby had surpassed $100,000 worth of T-shirts and attracted more than 10,000 community members, mostly artists in their teens and 20s. The user base has continued to grow from 70,000 members at the end of 2004 to more than 700,000 today. Sales in 2006 hit $18 million -- with profits of roughly $6 million. In 2007, growth continued at more than 200 percent, with similar margins. Nor was this a niche entry, trading on a specialised fabric or design or access to a boutique market. It has succeeded in one of the mainstream areas of clothing – the T-shirt. Amongst the most...

...SPAIN VS THE NETHERLANDS Spain’s high score means Spain is a hierachical society and people accept the hierarchical order in which everybody has a place and needs no further explaining. The Netherlands has a low score on this dimension opposite to Spain. This means control is disliked in The Netherlands and attitude towars managers is informal. Hierarchy in The Netherlands is only for the convenience. The Netherlands is a very individualistic country in comparison with Spain. In The Netherlands people take care of themselves and are expected to do so, where in Spain people are used to groups and are more family orientated. The Netherlands is feminine society with the low score of 14 and Spain is more masculine. The Netherlands has a slight preference for avoiding uncertainty with a score of 53 where Spain scores 86. In Spain people like to have rules for everything and change causes stress and confrontation is avoided. The Netherlands scores higher on pragmatism than Spain does. Spanish people like to live in the moment, without great concern about the future. Eventhough The Netherlands has a higher score on indulgence. Which means people in The Netherlands place a higher degree of importance on leisure time, act as they please and spend money as they wish. Whereas in Spain people want to control their desires. SPAINS VS SOUTH KOREA. Spain and South-Korea scores are both high scores. They both are hierachical societies and everybody accepts the order. Spain...

San Diego Fire Rescue-Department Analysis

...I have discussed three ways the San Diego Fire Rescue-Department (SDFD) can improve community involvement, which are: a welfare check program, community education, and community group outreach. Welfare check program: Identify households in each administrative district that need help with day to day functions such as: assistance with housework, yard work, exercise, and other needs they are not able to do without help. The recipients can be identified through emergency incidents, by referral from social services programs, or volunteer programs such as meals on wheels. Once identified task each company officer with maintaining a list of the recipients on each fire apparatus including battalion chief vehicle. Based on the needs and the discretion...
