Seat belts: The Ultimate Lifesaver

According to the Illinois State Police, One out of every five drivers will be involved in a traffic crash this year, and approximately 35,000 people die in motor vehicle crashes each year. About half of these people could be saved if they wore their seat belts. Driving is something that should always be taken seriously, but today there are still some people out there that think seat belts and seat belt laws are overrated and lame. In reality that is further from the truth. But today there are more hazards out there to beware of when driving. Seat belts are fairly simple and quick; they can be described as non-intrusive, much safer, and sometimes known as the ultimate lifesaver. It is time to make sure all drivers wear a seat belt. According to NTHSA, Seat belts when used properly reduce the number of serious traffic injuries by 60 percent and fatalities by 70-75 percent. Seat belts should always be utilized at all times in any motor vehicle, and seat belt laws should be heavily enforced. There are several reasons to utilize seat belts and to obey seat belt laws. First, requiring a driver to wear a seat belt is simple and quick because it is not only right there, but in reality seat belts only take about two seconds to put on. Furthermore, It is the law whether anyone likes or not. According to Encarta, seat belts were used as standard equipment for all vehicles in the mid to late 1960’s, so why not make use of them? According to the NTHSA, more than 95 percent of all motorists believe safety belts are good idea, but less than 15 percent actually use them. Seat belt laws are divided into two types: primary and secondary. Primary seat belt laws allow law enforcement officers to ticket a driver for not wearing a seat belt, without any other traffic offense taking place. Secondary seat belt laws state that law enforcement officers may issue a ticket for not wearing a seat belt only when there is another citable traffic infraction. Other drivers also would appreciate drivers who would use their seat belt as well. Seat belts are mainly non-intrusive and do not interfere with the driver’s interaction with the vehicle. According to James Madison University, “you’re more 25 times likely to crash if distracted while driving.” Distracted drivers can pull over before needing to access any important items in their pockets or in the glove box. Seat belts do not drastically limit a driver’s ability to evasively maneuver a vehicle. In any condition a driver should have control of their vehicle at all times. Above all, the most important reason to forcing a driver to wear a seat belt is that it is cheaper and saves more lives than it kills. According to cyberdriveillinois.com, for every one percent increase in seat belt use, 180 lives are saved. It is cheaper because you can receive discounts on car insurance for being a responsible driver, and not have to spend countless amounts of money on health costs. According to the Illinois State Police, close to a $100 million dollars in annual injury and death costs could be saved. According to a University of Illinois study, they demonstrated that car accident victims who had not worn seat belts cost the hospital, and the state in the case of the uninsured on average 30 percent more. Insurance companies like Allstate are offering safe driving bonus checks for every six or so months for people who go without an accident or receiving a traffic citation. Wearing seat belts is better than suffering from serious injuries. Some injuries include breaking bones, becoming permanently paralyzed, or death. According to the Secretary Of State Jessie White, in a 35 M.P.H. collision an unbelted 160 lb. Person can strike another passenger, crash through a windshield, and/or slam into the vehicle’s interior with 5,000 lbs. of force. A another example of a serious injury would be when someone close to you flies through a windshield because they didn’t wear a seat belt and break their bones, become paralyzed, or ending up dying. Today, the word “seat belt” to some seems to be overrated and lame. In reality when Seat belts are used properly they are the ultimate lifesaver and they improve the safety for yourself and others when traveling. Seat belt laws and seat belts not only benefits safety, but are very quick and simple, non-intrusive, and are so much safer if taken the time to be applied.

...Cooper Creek’s newest dad One minute, Keeton West is a confirmed bachelor and bull rider who lives out of a suitcase. The next, he’s the single dad of a baby he didn’t know existed. Now back in his hometown, everyone remembers the tragedy that changed his—and Sophie Cooper’s—lives forever. He desperately needs Sophie’s help with little Lucy. But spending time with Keeton seems to remind Sophie of all she lost. She won’t get close to another bull rider. Yet one sweet baby girl has her own way of bringing two hearts together. “What am I going to do with her, Sophie?” Keeton asked. “I’d say the same thing parents have done with babies for hundreds of years. Take her home and raise her.” “I’m a bull rider. I’m on the road almost fifty percent of the time. I’m living in a house that isn’t even livable.” Bull rider. That reminder had Sophie stepping back in her car, away from him, away from the tug on her heart and back into her shell. “Yes, well, I’d say you’d better get it livable.” “You could help me.” “I did. I changed the nastiest diaper in the history of diapers.” She glanced at her watch. “I’m late.” “We have to talk about the land.” “Later.” “Dinner?” He leaned in, holding tight to Lucy. “Nope. I don’t date bull riders.” She started her car and reached to close the door. He stood there, not moving. “I’m not asking you out.” Ouch. That hurt a little, for some crazy reason. “Good, I’m not accepting.” “Fine, I’ll see you later,” he said with...

When I was growing up, he liked to say, “Son, the most important word in the English language is ‘empathy.’ ” When I told him I was starting a business, his first words were, “Always treat your employees right.” He learned that appreciation the hard way, losing his father at a young age and countless war buddies in the trenches. Idioms and Expression

...Idioms and Expressions by David Holmes A method for learning and remembering idioms and expressions I wrote this model as a teaching device during the time I was working in Bangkok, Thailand, as a legal editor and language consultant, with one of the Big Four Legal and Tax companies, KPMG (during my afternoon job) after teaching at the university. When I had no legal documents to edit and no individual advising to do (which was quite frequently) I would sit at my desk, (like some old character out of a Charles Dickens’ novel) and prepare language materials to be used for helping professionals who had learned English as a second language—for even up to fifteen years in school—but who were still unable to follow a movie in English, understand the World News on TV, or converse in a colloquial style, because they’d never had a chance to hear and learn common, everyday expressions such as, “It’s a done deal!” or “Drop whatever you’re doing.” Because misunderstandings of such idioms and expressions frequently caused miscommunication between our management teams and foreign clients, I was asked to try to assist. I am happy to be able to share the materials that follow, such as they are, in the hope that they may be of some use and benefit to others. The simple teaching device I used was three-fold: 1. Make a note of an idiom/expression 2. Define and explain it in understandable words (including synonyms.) 3. Give at least three sample sentences to illustrate how the expression is used...

Life of Pi

...Acclaim for Yann Martel's Life of Pi "Life of Pi is not just a readable and engaging novel, it's a finely twisted length of yarn— yarn implying a far-fetched story you can't quite swallow whole, but can't dismiss outright. Life of Pi is in this tradition—a story of uncertain veracity, made credible by the art of the yarn-spinner. Like its noteworthy ancestors, among which I take to be Robinson Crusoe, Gulliver's Travels, the Ancient Mariner, Moby Dick and Pincher Martin, it's a tale of disaster at sea coupled with miraculous survival—a boys' adventure for grownups." —Margaret Atwood, The Sunday Times (London) "A fabulous romp through an imagination by turns ecstatic, cunning, despairing and resilient, this novel is an impressive achievement. . . . Martel displays the clever voice and tremendous storytelling skills of an emerging master." —Publisher's Weekly (starred review) "[Life of Pi] has a buoyant, exotic, insistence reminiscent of Edgar Allen Poe's most Gothic fiction. . . . Oddities abound and the storytelling is first-rate. Yann Martel has written a novel full of grisly reality, outlandish plot, inventive setting and thought-provoking questions about the value and purpose of fiction." —The Edmonton journal "Martel's ceaselessly clever writing . . . [and] artful, occasionally hilarious, internal dialogue . . . make a fine argument for the divinity of good art." —The Gazette "Astounding and beautiful. . . . Hia Its Ya Birthdya

...Yann Martel: Life of Pi life of pi A NOVEL author's note This book was born as I was hungry. Let me explain. In the spring of 1996, my second book, a novel, came out in Canada. It didn't fare well. Reviewers were puzzled, or damned it with faint praise. Then readers ignored it. Despite my best efforts at playing the clown or the trapeze artist, the media circus made no difference. The book did not move. Books lined the shelves of bookstores like kids standing in a row to play baseball or soccer, and mine was the gangly, unathletic kid that no one wanted on their team. It vanished quickly and quietly. The fiasco did not affect me too much. I had already moved on to another story, a novel set in Portugal in 1939. Only I was feeling restless. And I had a little money. So I flew to Bombay. This is not so illogical if you realize three things: that a stint in India will beat the restlessness out of any living creature; that a little money can go a long way there; and that a novel set in Portugal in 1939 may have very little to do with Portugal in 1939. I had been to India before, in the north, for five months. On that first trip I had come to the subcontinent completely unprepared. Actually, I had a preparation of one word. When I told a friend who knew the country well of my travel plans, he said casually, "They speak a funny English in India. They like words like bamboozle." I remembered his words as my plane started its descent towards Delhi, so the word bamboozle ...
