FIRST PICTURE:
The first photograph presents a horde of people, all carrying protest signs with sentences as “we protest school segregation”. From those keywords alone we can assume that this picture is way back from 1960, because that is that time where the conflicts about school segregation started. In that time the African-American children were not allowed to have school buses and their families also had to pay several dollars for heating in the winter. They were basically just separated from the whites, and they did not have the same opportunities as they had. Segregation basically means that you separate people into groups, and separate them depending on their race or their color of their skin. It is also separation when the white people go to one school and the blacks go to another, because then you don’t see each other as equal. In this case the black people are separated from the whites, and that is what they are protesting against in the picture.
When I saw this picture I noticed the little boy in the front. He is holding a sign that says “Don’t treat our children like prisoners”. I think he stand in the front, because the horde is trying to gain pity from those who are observing the protest. If you saw a child standing in the front of a demonstration, you would probably take the situation more seriously and in that way they maybe will get attention from people, and bring people on their side of the case. They are trying to achieve civil rights, but considering the amount of protest, there have been throughout American history, specifically the ones of rights for the black people – how big of an effect would this protest make? What would they achieve, if it has been done about a thousand times before? I mean, there have been many demonstrations before this, and we still have problems with racism today.
