The advocacy and practice of segregation has been observed in the work field. Oswald Warner suggested the role of real-estate agents contributed to the segregation in Saginaw. Warner explained how Real-estate agents would deliberately steer black families into buying houses in separate areas than the white families. This method goes undetected by the buyers, and as a result segregated areas in the City of Saginaw emerge.
Another study (Smith 2002) addressed the conflict of segregation in the work field. Smith claimed there was a difference in the process to obtain authority between whites and minorities. The author stated, “Employers reward the credentials of one group more than the other,” (Smith, 2002). As a result, racial groups have to attain authority through different means. The standards for a minority to achieve authority are stricter. Essentially, they have to convince their superiors that they are better than the bias of comparison. Researchers remind us segregation and inequality is not limited to a certain group, it effects all groups of people. However, studies and statistics (McDonald 2001; Smith 2002 and Salzman 1999) prove the degree of segregation varies depending on the group. McDonald’s study explored the white population’s explanation for Hispanic inequality and how it differed from black inequality. Whites associate Hispanic inequality with ‘no chance for education’ thus Hispanic inequality stems from a weak structure. While on the other hand, whites associate black inequality with a ‘lack of motivation’ which is a weak individual. (McDonald 2001). McDonald’s study demonstrated how the differences in perception affect the treatment of others.
