Career versus Job Security?

J.D. Wallace, III, is an Area Project Engineer with Bechtel Engineering, headquartered in Houston, Texas. He possesses a Six Sigma Black Belt earned after an intensive selection and training program at Bechtel. In the section below he describes his assessment of career development.

“The Petroleum and Chemical industry is a very volatile industry. Companies in this industry cycle from having five or six projects in-house to as few as one or two. Therefore, it is important that an individual maintains a competitive edge in order to stay employed and advance his career. New technologies are a consistent part of our work life. When I started my career all design drawings were done by hand. In today’s workplace all design drawings are created on computers. Computers are more efficient and provide multiple means of defect detection. The result is less staff and shorter project schedules. It is important to continually learn your industry’s new technology. When the industry shifted to computers, many of the 20-years-plus employees chose not to embrace the change. In a relatively short span of five years, they were no longer in the industry. Individuals that keep up with the new technologies increase their market value.

“Most companies will provide limited training for new software. It has been my experience that 70 percent of the people enrolled in the first training class are the same people that were in the last training. It is not surprising that they are also ranked in the top 10 percent. Community colleges and local universities also provide training. These classes are often given at night and on weekends. They are often taught by people that work in the industry.

I once took micro-station training at the office and received the basic training.

Fall Evaluation for University

...reviewing my lecture notes along with studying for my exams. The first focus that is important for me to keep consistent is my time management skills. Before I did not have a set strategy for how I am going to execute this so I just went with the flow as the day passed. This was a not beneficial for me because for anything that happened unexpected, I was not prepared with a backup plan to get caught up. I would instead wait until later on during the week to catch up on what I missed so I decided to make an schedule/planner. In the morning I go to the gym before lectures that way I have energy to go about my day. In between lectures, I use to walk back to residence to take a nap, but now I stay on campus and spend time in open seminar rooms where I catch up on my readings. When the day finishes, I double check to make sure I have my readings finished before next day’s lecture and if I do, I allow myself to hang out with my friends by going to the gym at night or watching television. Overall, I think I’m doing a decent job of making this an everyday habit. The only criticism I have for myself in regards to time management is making sure I check my email everyday since I learned my lesson for missing assignments for the STEP program. Another focus I am keeping consistent is my attendance. Last term I use to miss some morning classes due to sleeping in, but with the planner I have made for myself that is no longer a problem since I’m a the gym every morning before...

...August 25, 2015 To: Kaci Bray From: Joseph Kolega Subject: Orientation – Freshman Point of view Hello, I am a freshman at KU this semester. Before this, however, I went through an admissions process along with my orientation to follow. For the most part my transition from high school student to college student was nearly seamless. Looking back at the entire process, there are a few air bubbles I think if smoothed out could benefit not only the incoming freshman, but the university as a whole. Seminars? I will admit I’m not fully adept in courses at KU just yet, nor will I ever be. One thing that irked me orientation day was the hour long lecture on how critical a seminar class will be to our KU core. Now I understand this is a huge thing in liberal education, but gearing everyone for an hour to take one course they will never use isn’t justified when there are 100 other courses I could choose that weren’t as heavily endorsed. The school biased common book seminars, and I almost felt as though they were sticking their hand in my education, to be dramatic. Account Issues Once it was time to log in and finally enroll into our courses, I hit a road block when I found out we were supposed to have our KU ID and password already memorized and ready to go. Being told to walk all the way up to a different hall to reset my account was troubling and ultimately put me behind in line to pick ideal class times. I take partial accountability for my lack of knowledge on my own account...

Jesus: Advocating Community

...Jesus: Advocating Community Some would say God, or the author of Genesis, got it right: "It is not good for man to be alone." For as long as there have been humans, there have been communities. We are communal beings. From the first small tribes to the modern day mega cities, communities have evolved just as much as the human species. There are many ways that one can identify with a community. Human beings as well as many other species, especially primates, need these groupings as much as most social animals. Watch as every Sunday thousands sit distant from their closest sports field, straining to see the players, although they can far more easily watch the game at home in the comfort of their living rooms. Yet, in modern times, the community seems to be falling apart. They are not as strong as they once were. It is time we look back to the social climate that forged one of the most influential revolutionaries of all time. The historical Jesus of Nazareth. As John Crossan said “If the supreme value for the twentieth-century American imagination is individualism , based on economics and property, that for the first-century Mediterranean imagination can be called, to the contrary, groupism.” Our society has experienced major social shifts that would be unimaginable to a small Jewish town in ancient Palestine. Individuals no longer realize they need to rely on others in the way they once did. Modern technology has pushed us farther and farther into our own homes and away...

Determining Hris Needs

...Systems Consideration in HRIS In today’s knowledge economy, organizational success depends almost disproportionally on the performance of Human Resources (HR). To increase the effectiveness of Human Resource Management (HRM) organizations are becoming more dependent on human Resource Information Systems (HRIS). A HRIS organizes employee applicant and qualifications, organizational demographics, recruiting, professional development, performance appraisals, payroll, retention, and attrition. Organizations that implement HRIS’s improve the organizations administrative efficiency with faster information processing, improved employee communications, greater information accuracy, lover costs and overall HR productivity improvements (Beadles, 2005). When selecting a HRIS, Human Resources (HR) should consider the efficiencies of using software as a service, the inefficiencies of various Microsoft Access based database software, the risks involved with integrating and combining multiple products into one system, and the consequences of improper database maintenance. In analyzing HRIS’s that would be beneficial in my current organization I chose to focus on HRIS Pro by Micro Systems, and MyHRIS by Nuview Systems. Commercial Database Systems HRIS-Pro information management software allows organizations greater effectiveness in managing HR functions and responsibilities. The advantages of HRIS-Pro are the information systems cost, modular flexibility, expansion capabilities,...

...Matthew 6:33 Seek Ye First the Kingdom of God and His Righteousness and All these things shall be added unto you, All these things: " Needs of Life and Not wants What was spoke in previous verses What is First: Priority: Jesus wants the first moments of everyday. Jesus wants the first day of every week. Jesus wants the first part of every paycheck. He wants to be first. God sought us first. The very act of creation is one of pursuit – He created us so that we could know Him. And through Jesus He has sought to restore us to Himself. He has given us an invitation to come to know Him. Jesus told His disciples to ask, seek, and knock; in doing so they would receive God's good provision (Matthew 7:7). Jesus even prayed for future believers that they would be with Him (John 17:20-26). He promised to continue to make Himself known to us. It is clear that God desires relationship with us. He has given us a taste of who He (Psalm 34:8); and we are invited to continue to seek Him to more deeply understand His goodness. Now everything rises and falls right here. If your priorities are not in order, your life will not be in order. If your priorities are not right, you won't be right. You don't have to pray about what your number one priority in life ought to be. You don't have to think about it. You don't have to discuss it. You don't have to look for it. You just have to do it. Because Jesus has already told us what our first priority ought to be, "seek ye first the kingdom of God...

Riordan

...Running head:   Human Resource System Executive Summary In 1992, Riordan Manufacturing Inc., implemented and established human resource information system (HRIS), which was included as part of a financial package. The HRIS package included functions such as maintaining personnel information, pay rate and tax information, hire and seniority dates, vacation leave for non-exempt employees, and organizational information. However, certain areas of the HRIS could be improved upon and developed. One area that needs improvement is the network communications between headquarters and all the Riordan plants. Improvements are also needed in central repository, resume storage, maintaining training and knowledge skills information, online employee user interface, and a central location for updating and maintaining employee personal and professional information. Improving the current HRIS activities would be advantageous to Riordan leadership and their employees. Hugh McMCauley, the COO for Riordan Manufacturing requested that the human resources (HR) system be analyzed to integrate the existing variety of tools in use in the present day to a single integrated application. The request will take advantage of a more sophisticated look for information systems technology in the HR department at Riordan Manufacturing. After the project is to be completed, Riordan Manufacturing will then be left with a detailed project plan that will provide a list of tasks, resources, schedule and budget required...

As a family-owned chain, the restaurant as proven success by operating eight (8) restaurants under the family name. In an effort to continue achieving the high levels of success that it has experienced over the years and possibly expand further, certain aspects of the operation of the company will have to be controlled by technology. One such area is the HR process that has become a manual, time consuming, daunting process. Castle’s can improve their HR operations and support their growing company overall, by implementing a web-based HRIS. After much research and evaluating the needs of the organization my recommendation to help with automating the HR process would be Asentis. Capratek Training Program Design

...CapraTek Training Program Design: HRM 5015 Leading and Managing Workplace Learning Training Topic Topic Identification The training topic I will design for CapraTek is Sexual Harassment: You make the call. Upon interviewing various supervisors for their different plants I found that overall they are all uncomfortable with their knowledge on laws that affect their associates. Considering that the new plant is being opened in a state where there is a mandatory sexual harassment training law. Strategic Needs Due to the mandatory regulation of this training it is cost effective to use this training as an opportunity to grow our leadership. By having a in person session with our supervising team we can instill leadership behaviors that will help them in other areas of leadership. This seminar will give them the tools needed to solve other law/policy related problems. If we have to spend money let us make sure that we are getting a better return on investment from it. Needs Analysis Currently our company’s objective is to open the plant in Illinois and train our supervising staff accordingly. One major obstacle to this is the mandatory regulation of sexual harassment training by the state. Our supervisor must know what is legally required of them and what we expect from them. Our expectation is that they are able to fully understand what is sexual harassment, what are the signs of it, who to prevent it and...
