Pandora

...interpretations, her curiosity. Parents: One account has Pandora made by Hephaistos at the request of Zeus and adorned byAthena and Aphrodite. But another story says she was the creation of Prometheus and Epimetheus. Pandora's Spouse: She was given as a gift to Epimetheus. Children: None known; symbolically she is known as the releaser or "mother" of troubles. Associated Sites: Mount Olympus, where she was created. Basic Story: Zeus, upset with the brothers Prometheus and Epimetheus for having successfully brought fire to humankind, making for all those annoying sparkling lights on the ground at night, decides to even things up by introducing disease, death, and sorrow to humankind. In the original tale these things are held in a jar, not a box. He orders Pandora to be created and gives her as a gift to Epimetheus, brother of Prometheus. She is told to never open her jar, but the gods and goddesses have also made her curious. Eventually, she opens the jar, which in some versions was not given to her by Zeus, but was instead kept locked up by Epimetheus, who did not want humankind to suffer. But in either case, the vessel is opened. Pandora realizes what she has done, but cannot slam the lid back on fast enough. The only thing left in the jar is Elpis, or Hope. There are several variants to Pandora's tale, more than the usual for Greek myths. In one, Zeus actually sends her with great gifts for mankind rather than evils. In most tales, she is...

Case Study

...that he has the unused coupons as documentation that neither he nor anyone else has used them. The courts define a gift as “a voluntary transfer of property by one to another without adequate [valuable] consideration or compensation therefrom.” In my research I found that in the Income Act of 1913 states that Congress has allowed the recipient of a gift to exclude the value of a property from gross income. The only exclusion applies to gifts made during the life of the donor and transfers that take effect upon the death of the donor. Though, the recipient of a gift of income-producing property is subject to tax on the income earned from the property. For example, when receiving a home that is being rented it out. The income from the rent is taxed not the property itself. Now if the payment was not for services rendered, otherwise it is not considered a gift, the payment has to be made without a legal or moral obligation and you as the payor received no economic benefit from the transfer. For it to be a gift, the payment must be made more of an impulse or charity. From what I have seen from most cases dealing with gift tax, is most where ruled on the bases of the donor’s intent. We can rule out that it was a payment from an employer due to winning it at a Houston Astro’s baseball game. If it was from an employer to an employee is could not be excluded as a gift. (Freeman, L. (2012). The down Side of Prize Winning.) To answer the first question of whether not the coupon are...

Beowulf

...regarding acts of bravery, honor, success, and reward. Treasure is both gained through the brave battles that Beowulf fights against the three monsters he encounters, and his rewards reflect upon his success and honor in victory. Treasure is also redistributed throughout the text form king to warrior and vice-versa, symbolizing the acknowledgement of honor and reward from one generation to the next. Treasure is viewed in each of the battles as proof of victory and with this proof of success, the holder of such treasure proves that he is worthy and deserving of loyalty from and by brave warriors. After slaying Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and the dragon, treasure is gained and passed along to the next generation, such as when Hrothgar gives gifts to Beowulf, who distributes it among his people, to show and symbolize the potential sacrifices made to gain the treasure, and thus the bravery, honor, success, and reward that the treasure surely represents throughout the text. After Beowulf slays the monster Grendel, King Hrothgar rewards and thanks Beowulf for his efforts by offering him several objects considered treasure. Among the multitude of objects that he presents to Beowulf: “He gave to Beowulf the blade of Healfdene/ a golden war-standard Roberts: 2 as a reward for victory” (Beowulf 1020-1021) Here the word “treasure” is substituted with “a golden war-standard”, which implies that the treasure was a reward for Beowulf’s heroic deed of slaying the monster that terrorized...

...4.1 ELECTRONİC PAYMENT SYSTEMS (EPS) Issues of trust and acceptance play a more significant role in the e-commerce world than in traditional businesses as far as payment systems are concerned. Traditionally, a customer sees a product, examines it, and then pays for it by cash, check, or credit card (Figure 4.1). In the e-commerce world, in most cases the customer does not actually see the concrete product at the time of transaction, and the method of payment is performed electronically. Figure 4.1 Traditional payment scheme EPSs enable a customer to pay for the goods and services online by using integrated hardware and software systems. The main objectives of EPS are to increase efficiency, improve security, and enhance customer convenience and ease of use. Although these systems are in their immaturity, some significant development has been made. There are several methods and tools that can be used to enable EPS implementation (Figure 4.2) Figure 4.2 Electronic payment scheme While customers pay for goods/services by cash, check, or credit cards in conventional businesses, online buyers may use one of the following EPSs to pay for products/services purchased online: • • • • • • • • • Electronic funds transfer (EFT): EFT involves electronic transfer of money by financial institutions. The Five Love Language

...For the five love languages quiz I scored a nine in acts of service and in quality time. I scored an eight in words of affirmation, a three in physical touch, and a one in receiving gifts. I feel that these results definitely match up with my own personal love language. One way in which they match up is my score of receiving gifts, in my family or in my love relationships gifts were never a big part of the relationship and receiving gifts did not make me love the person more. Another way is through the physical touch score of three, I have never been a touchy feely person in any of my past relationships. However, I do like some touch and to hold my boyfriend’s hand when we’re walking or for him to give me a kiss on the check in public. I was...

Mis Chapter 3

...black on their income statements. But not anymore . . . Cyber Monday is quickly replacing Black Friday as the big shopping day. Cyber Monday occurs on the Monday after Black Friday weekend. Cyber Monday is the day when consumers go back to work and shop on the Internet for products they found on Black Friday on retail shelves. Almost 80 percent of online retailers state that sales significantly increased on Cyber Monday last year. And, yes, we are talking about people being at work and shopping for Christmas gifts. According to a BIG research/shop.org survey of 7,200 consumers, 37 percent stated that they have used or will use the Internet at work to shop for gifts online. While that creates a problem for productivity in the workplace, online retailers are redefining their business models to take advantage of Cyber Monday. Ice.com, an online jewelry retailer, sees this as a new business dimension, so much so that it’s offering free shipping and a gift-with-purchase promotion for everyone ordering products on Cyber Monday. According to Pinny Ginwisch, Ice.com founder and executive vice president of marketing, “The results are unbelievable.” Ice.com expects 400,000 to 600,000 visitors on Cyber Monday, almost double the usual traffic. Like all online businesses, Ice.com recognizes that danger lies within any opportunity. For example, increased Web traffic means potential processing delays. So, Ice.com is adding five backup servers just to handle the additional traffic...
