Final Week of Senior Year

This was the last year of our annual legacy game for our boys’ basketball team. The last year of all of us being forced to see one another when were not so found of one another at some point. The last of being around our favorite teachers. When we were having a bad day, and nothing seemed to be going right, we all had that one teacher to go to. There were no more, “Oh I’ll tell you Monday” when we had a laundry list of gossip to tell. There were not going to be any more of those dreadful Mondays that put an end to our weekends, or skipping school to go to the mall, or skipping class to go to the gym. This was the last year for the Class of 2015 at Crispus Attucks High School. Before we knew it, all we’d have left of high school would be our diplomas and our many memories. That’s why it was so important to make the most of our last week at our historic school on the North-West side of Indianapolis.

June 10 finally was arriving. Our graduation ceremony was at five in the afternoon. We had to arrive by four o’clock for our final practice. This was the most bitter sweet moment ever. I don’t think anyone cried, but it was still an emotional day for us all. This was the final practice run. It was also painful because it was required that we had to walk around the whole school to the doors we had to enter in, in my heels. I’m pretty sure every girl had on heels, but if we knew that we had to walk around the school we would have thought twice. Horrible feeling, I felt like collapsing because the pavement was not smooth, it was terrible and we had to do it twice. We sung our alma mater, one of our previous graduates who went to Harvard spoke, our valedictorian and salutatorian spoke. It was awesome and not too long, there were only 98 of us. My uncle recorded the entire thing, they also showed pictures of us take throughout the years and our baby pictures. Our high school career had finally

...UNSW School of Economics ECON1203 Business and Economic Statistics Session 1, 2015 Major project: AdVantage Purpose The idea is of this assignment is to simulate a professional work task involving statistical analysis. It is designed to help students learn about what is involved in undertaking basic statistical analysis to understand a real-world problem, and communicating the results of this analysis to business stakeholders. Context and Problem You are working as a business analyst for Crunch-IT Consultants, a Sydney-based company that specializes in providing statistical consulting services to small and medium-sized companies. Your company is contacted by AdVantage, a designer of online advertisements whose business model is based on selling their design services to businesses that place ads on social media sites. You attend a breakfast meeting with a senior Crunch-IT consultant and AdVantage’s owner-operator, Arnold Valenzuela, to discuss Arnold’s concerns. At the meeting, Arnold says: “Well, first, I’d like to know whether any of the four designers I’ve hired are underperforming relative to their peers. It’s easy to see that there are big differences across my designers in the styles of their ads, and I can’t help thinking that maybe some styles drive traffic better than others – but maybe that’s not the case. Of course, as with any business, ensuring I am offering a value proposition to clients is key to generating repeat business and word-ofmouth...

Hulme Case

...Team Collapse at Richard, Wood, Hulme, LLP EXECUTIVE SUMMARY SITUATION ANALYSIS Established in 1998 by Chris Richard, Gemma Wood and Lauren Hulme, Richard, Wood and Hulme LLP (“RWH”) is a financial services firm offering audit and taxation services to its clients with a mission of delivering excellent service and improving clients’ internal controls. Being a “team player” is an essential trait of a RHW employee because client audits are completed by teams. The client fee is flat, so the more efficiently and effectively the team members’ work, the higher the margins the firm realizes. The firm does not tolerate those with poor teamwork behaviors as evidenced by the fact that RWH has terminated only a handful of employees since the firm’s inception, and those terminations were mainly because those individuals were not able to work effectively in teams. The case is set in the Fall of 2008 at the height of the North American financial crisis and at a time when some of RWH’s clients are filing for bankruptcy and others are demanding reductions in audit fees. During this difficult economic time, RWH is opting to maintain existing staffing levels and as a result is losing money. However, RWH views an event scheduled to occur in 2011, the conversion of Canadian financial reporting standards from GAAP to IFRS, as an attractive business opportunity and wants to maintain its current staffing level to take advantage of this future opportunity. During the Fall of...

Fraternity

...Oracle: The Research Journal of the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors Vol. 4, Iss. 2, September 2009 THE EFFECTS OF FRATERNITY/SORORITY MEMBERSHIP ON COLLEGE EXPERIENCES AND OUTCOMES: A PORTRAIT OF COMPLEXITY Ashley M. Asel, Tricia A. Seifert, and Ernest T. Pascarella This study estimated the effects of fraternity/sorority membership on a wide range of college experiences and outcomes for first-year and senior college students at a large, public, Midwestern university. The findings suggest a complex portrait of the relationships between affiliation, engagement, and learning outcomes. Fraternity/sorority membership appeared to facilitate social involvement during college but may have limited the diversity of relationships. It was associated with higher levels of community service, but also increased the odds of excessive alcohol use. In the presence of controls for important, confounding influences, being a fraternity/sorority member had little consistent influence on grades or perceived impact of college. There was little support for gender differences in the impact of affiliation. Finally, implications for student affairs professionals in their work with undergraduate fraternity/sorority leaders and members were considered. Most institutions of higher education hold student learning and success as parts of their primary missions (Kuh, Kinzie, Schuh, Whitt, & Associates, 2005; Kuh, Schuh, Whitt, & Associates, 1991). Faculty members, staff members, and administrators...

Martha

...MARTHY MCCASKEY* Martha McCaskey1 felt both elated and uneasy after her late Friday meeting with Tom Malone and Bud Hackert, two of the top managers in Praxis Associates’ Industry Analysis division. Malone, the division’s de facto COO, had said that upon successful completion of the Silicon 6 study, for which McCaskey was project leader, she would be promoted to group manager. The promotion would mean both a substantial increase in pay and a reprieve from the tedious field work typical of Praxis’ consulting projects. Completing the Silicon 6 project, however, meant a second session with Phil Devon, the one person who could provide her with the information required by Praxis’ client. Now, McCaskey reflected, finishing the project would likely mean following the course of action proposed by Hackert and seconded by Malone to pay Devon off. Praxis’ client, a semiconductor manufacturer based in California, was trying to identify the cost structure and manufacturing technologies of a new chip produced by one of its competitors. McCaskey and the others felt certain that Phil Devon, a semiconductor industry consultant who had worked in the competitor’s West Coast operation some 12 years earlier, could provide the detailed information on manufacturing costs and processes required by their client (see Exhibit I for a summary of the required information). Her first interview with Devon had caused McCaskey to have serious doubts both about the propriety of asking for such...

...as a proxy to the bigger issues that were present during the engagement. The Deloitte team was made up of five members. Two senior leads of the group, David Hendry, and Annette Wattley-Davis, had extensive experience both with the Consulting Company and the automotive industry. Given the complexity of the project, and especially the urge for delivering concrete quantifiable results within relatively short 12 week engagement, it seemed as a sound strategic decision to enforce the consulting team with these high-profile experienced employees. The other three members, Ben Rohan, Maria Chen and Ramesh Patel, were the most critical part of the engagement. Of this group only one, Rohan, was a senior consultant with extensive prior experience in procurement and manufacturing. He also had been on three different engagements while with Deloitte. On the other hand, Maria and Ramesh did not have enough relevant experience, especially in client-facing situations. The three team members were supposed to do all the actual legwork in interacting with the client on daily basis, collecting and analyzing data, finding, presenting, and helping with the implementation of the solution to the client’s inventory problems. It is obvious that their outstanding academic credentials and technical skills were a great asset for the team, and given the right guidance from the senior managers they were capable of tackling the problem at hand. However, this did not happen. David Hendry was only nominally involved...
