Galvatrens Case Study

...procedure that outlined how an employee could bring actions of misconduct to the appropriate personnel without the fear of reprisals; Mike went to the COO, Harry Mart, to report the channel stuffing scheme. Once he did not get a reply back, his complaint was directed to Terry Samples which was his immediate supervisor. Basically Mike reported a channel stuffing scheme to his own boss when he already had apprehensions due to the fact he did not know who was all involved in the misconduct. Mike Fields had no confidence in his higher level management which left him with no recourse when Terry asked him to transfer to Indianapolis or find a new job. As stated in the in the problem identification, this lawsuit’s plaintiff was given a valid fear or anxiety in trying to bring the discovered transgression to any other persons of authority. Merriam-Webster defines an ombudsman as “an official appointed to receive and investigate complaints made by individuals against abuses or capricious acts” (2011). In this case study an ombudsman was recommended by an independent review board and was not implemented due the strong urging of the Vice President of HR, Dale Willis (Hasson et al., 2007). Galvatrens did not implement the ombudsman along with other recommendations that were suggested. The lack of an independent third party or ombudsman by which an employee can report misconduct severely handicapped the communication process of those who were trying to be good custodians of Galvatrens. The Road

...In The Road by Cormac McCarthy, It is said that fear is the strongest motivator in the world. People in fear are willing to do whatever, go beyond any border and forget all rules. Fear can easily take over our mind and control our every move. But how much does it take to push a person beyond his limits? What kind of a fear can make us forget everything about humanity and morals? These questions are one of the main themes in Cormac McCarthy’s novel ”The Road” We are all afraid of different things. Some are afraid to lose their family and friends others on the other hand their money and possessions. Cormac McCarthy’s great novel ”The Road” tells us a story of a post-apocalyptic world where everything is destroyed and life is almost extinct. There are left only handful people, who are willing to do everything to survive. But some of them are willing to go further than the others. Fear influences every person differently. But how can some of us still maintain our moral values even though we might be scared to death? In ”The Road” the main characters, the man and the boy represent a group of people who does not let the fear control their minds. The man is constantly afraid of his son getting killed or starving to death. The boy is worried about his father and about being left alone in this terrible world if his father should die. Stress Management Among College Students

...Chapter 2 REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES This chapter reviews the related literature and studies from other researches relevant to the present study. Related Literature Many researches have been conducted to know what stress is all about and its effects to human if it exceeds beyond our control. Selye as cited by Berry (1997) defined stress in physiological terms as a non-specific or generalized bodily response. This response results when any demand is made on the body, whether it is an environment condition that we must survive or a demand that we make ourselves in order to accomplish a personal goal. Selye distinguished between two forms of stress. Distress is the response to negative events and eustress (euphoria) is the response to positive events. Stress is good and will motivate people to succeed, but too much stress can affect one’s performance (http://www.chow.com). Greener as cited by de Jesus (2010:p.22) opined that most people can cope with and even need a certain amount of stress to perform to the peak of their ability but when demands for dealing with it outstrip resources, strength or time, it becomes dangerous. Feldman (2005) said that stress is a normal part of life and not a necessary a bad part of life. However, it is also clear that too much stress can take a toll on both physical and psychological health. According to Stuthers (2000), stress is what people feel when they are worried or...

Ordinary People

...Within the Jarret family, Beth, Conrad and Calvin all have different problems, which all still exist among present day people. Each individual's problem involves another member of the family, resulting in a new problem. Beth is a perfectionist who is inexperienced with tragedy, Conrad searches for himself while trying to please people around him, and Calvin is overcautious about his son. Although all three have different problems this film depicts how one person's problems can affect the entire family. Beth's inability to forgive forces her son, Conrad, into living for others, and her husband, Calvin into obsession with his son's feelings. Conrad's mother refuses to forgive him for his suicide attempt, because she believes he did it in order to destroy her perfectly ordered life. To begin with, Beth likes to believe that life is faultless so her family is forced to tolerate it. Beth is used to a perfect life therefore she is unable to adjust when something goes wrong. By learning her irritations, Beth's family allows her to maintain the perfect image. However, by encouraging her to keep up the perfection, Beth will assume flawlessness is the norm. Secondly, Beth is accustomed to perfection; as a result she takes Conrad's suicide attempt as his revolt, and refuses to forgive him saying "Blame me for the whole thing... That whole vicious thing! Into the Unknown: Where Will the Jobs of the Future Come from?

...ousting skilled clerical workers and replacing them with operators...Opportunity in the white-collar services is being steadily undermined.” The anxiety sounds thoroughly contemporary. But Mr Chase's publisher, MacMillan, “set up and electrotyped” his book, “Men and Machines”, in 1929. The worry about “exporting” jobs that currently grips America, Germany and Japan is essentially the same as Mr Chase's worry about mechanisation 75 years ago. When companies move manufacturing plants from Japan to China, or call-centre workers from America to India, they are changing the way they produce things. This change in production technology has the same effect as automation: some workers in America, Germany and Japan lose their jobs as machines or foreign workers take over. This fans fears of rising unemployment. What the worriers always forget is that the same changes in production technology that destroy jobs also create new ones. Because machines and foreign workers can perform the same work more cheaply, the cost of production falls. That means higher profits and lower prices, lifting demand for new goods and services. Entrepreneurs set up new businesses to meet demand for these new necessities of life, creating new jobs. As Alan Greenspan, chairman of America's Federal Reserve Bank, has pointed out, there is always likely to be anxiety about the jobs of the future, because in the long run most of them will involve producing goods and services that have not yet been invented. William...

Something Real

...In the beginning God created heaven and earth, and in the beginning I started going to church. My family doesn’t make an occasional cameo appearance on Christmas Day and Easter morning. No, we sit, stand, and kneel every Sunday, and we’ve done so since before I was potty-trained. From the day my parents stopped keeping me quiet with cheerios and coloring books, I’ve been asking why we couldn’t skip just one week of mass. My mother tells me, “We have to thank God for all He’s given us.” On vacation in the Cayman Islands, we attend the Baptist church to thank God for a week of scuba diving. Before dinner each night, we hold hands and pray. Thank you, God, for our lovely family, our health, our happiness, and the lasagna on my plate-which I cannot wait to eat. Sometimes I reflect on how truly thankful we are, other times I just dig into the lasagna. I’ve always believed in God, but never expected to be as pious as my grandmother, who shakes the priest’s hand more vigorously than a five-year-old being introduced to Mickey Mouse. If I touch my head or sneak a piece of gum during the sermon, my grandmother mutters that I may as well be an atheist. She prays to St. Anthony for me, and when I ask why she’s praying to the patron saint of lost items and travelers, because all I did was tie my shoe, she tells me to stop being wise. Although my mother thinks this is just a phase, I have begun to have my doubts. I have some trouble believing Jesus turned ten fish into meals for thousands...

Paper

... But, the day when I am one hundred percent confident to give a public speech is somewhere in the near future. How do I know this? Through my public speaking course this semester, I completed an anxiety survey. Although I was already aware that I have a slight fear of public communication, this self-examination revealed to me my speaking apprehension score that was labeled with a specific level of anxiety. Not only, though, was I faced with a given intensity of anxiety, I was learning things about myself that I never thought I would obtain such an insight to. Moderate: the level at which my public speaking apprehension score happened to fall. I recognized right away that I wasn’t necessarily in the higher or lower range. This assisted me in looking at the glass as half full, which happens to be an obligation if I plan to eliminate this category of anxiety from my life. As I sat and thought about my score, it hit me that I over emphasized my partial fear of publicly speaking in front of large groups of people. What I thought was going to be the end of the world was really just normal amounts of tension, stress, and anxiety that I was way too easily letting get to me. Seeing these results brought to my attention strengths that can assist my in kicking public speaking anxiety: I radiate optimism, am smart and energetic, and I have confidence with every other task I face in day-to-day situations. Confidence seems to occur naturally day, but it is only present nearly half...

Stress

...We generally use the word “stress” when we feel that everything seems to have become too much - we are overloaded and wonder whether we really can cope with the pressures placed upon us. Anything that poses a challenge or a threat to our well-being is a stress. Some stresses get you going and they are good for you - without any stress at all many say our lives would be boring and would probably feel pointless. However, when the stresses undermine both our mental and physical health they are bad. This lecture will discuss different causes of stress, how stress affects you, the difference between 'good' or 'positive' stress and 'bad' or 'negative' stress, and some common facts about how stress affects people today. Many different things can cause stress - from physical (such as fear of something dangerous) to emotional (such as worry over your family or job.) Identifying what may be causing you stress is often the first step in learning how to better deal with your stress. Some of the most common sources of stress are: • Survival Stress - You may have heard the phrase "fight or flight" before. Survival Stress - You may have heard the phrase "fight or flight" before. When you are afraid that someone or something may physically hurt you, your body naturally responds with a burst of energy so that you will be better able to survive the dangerous situation (fight) or escape it all together (flight). This is survival stress. • Internal Stress - Have you ever...

Effects of Stress on Physical and Psychological Health.

...The way that a person manages stress can have a big impact on the body’s physical and psychological well being. Stress can effect one’s body in a bad way or in a good way; some of the reasons for stress are to keep the bodies brain thinking about the right things. If it weren’t for stress the body would just keep moving forward without the worries of what needs to be done. Stress is healthy to a certain extent and it has to be managed on a healthy level. Bad stress can affect the body in a negative way; it can actually cause health problems if not dealt with in the proper manner. Stress is one of the most important health and social problems. Previous studies have demonstrated stress influence on the clinical course of a number of gastrointestinal diseases, but its physical and psychological effects on gastric acid and pepsin secretions are largely unknown. There were 48 male winstar rats divided up into six groups; and in the study, electrical shock generated in a communication box was used as physical shock and the emotional stress was as psychological stress. Gastric juice was collected by washout technique. Acid output was also measured by digital testator. Gastric pepsin and nitric oxide (NO) metabolites were quantified using Anson and Griess micro assay methods respectively. Basal and stimulated gastric acid and pepsin in physical and psychological stress groups were significantly more than others. NO metabolites level of gastric tissue in physical and psychological stress...

...emotional support. They can do this by providing strategies to help her come to terms with her feelings. She will be able to release stress and feelings of unhappiness to the counsellor in which they are willing to hear so they may be able to give help. A counsellor may refer Helena to other practitioners, such as GPs, social services if they believe that she isn’t safe or needs help that they cannot provide her with, such as medication. GPs may provide Helena with treatment for any health issues she may have/risk getting, such as depression, anxiety, anger, anorexia etc. Many young carers are prone to developing health issues due to stress, unhappiness etc. If the GP believes that the Helena cannot cope with the stress of being a young carer and is in serious danger for many reasons they may refer Helena to social services. Social services can provide Helena’s mother with another carer that will help Helena by relieving stress and anxiety when she is at school (so she doesn’t think her mother will not be able to cope without her and feel guilty for leaving her on her own) and will also be able to give Helena more time to concentrate on school work and have some social/free time. Social services can also provide Helena’s mother with respite care, which is temporary institutional care of a sick, elderly, or disabled person, providing relief for their usual carer. This will relieve Helena duties of caring for her mother and give her time to rest, socialise, come to terms with her...
