Setting and Achieving Goals

Course Number (ORG300) – Applying Leadership Principles
Colorado State University – Global Campus
Dr. Doeford Shirley
January 4, 2015 Every existing organization has a leadership. Every leader has a goal, and usually it is connected with establishing and developing effective strategy which will be helping the achievement of the company’s goals. Humankind has practiced in many and different planning strategies during its existence. Apparently some of them have been more successful than others. However, the most common techniques that are used and proved to be effective are known as strategic planning and tactical planning. In my opinion the planning in our days is with tremendous importance for companies’ well-functioning. Many factors will play role in companies’ functioning. Some are preventable and predictable, while others are quite surprising. However, having a plan of action can be in great benefit. The negative impact always can be minimized by having proper plan, or if we anticipate positive circumstances to happen the benefits we can obtain will be even greater.
From historical point of view it is proven that strategic planning is more appropriate for accomplishing long term goals. Basically strategic planning is an organizational management activity that is used to set priorities, focus energy and resources, strengthen operations, and ensure that employees and other stakeholders are working toward common goals. During this process the management is in charge of assessing and adjusting the direction of the organization in case the course is not the desired one. For the strategic planning also can be told that is targeted effort in reaction of which are produced essential actions and decisions. Usually these decisions and actions shape the look that an organization has and dictate its nature and politic on the market.

...two or more parties or within the person himself (Anant 2010, p. 34). This essay argues that good intrapersonal and interpersonal perception is vital in individual success both at university and at work. This topic includes motivational goal setting, accurate self-monitoring, successful coordination of actions and good interpersonal skills. Intrapersonal perception is one of the decisive components in achieving both academic and career success. It involves understanding of a person himself, including his goals, characteristics and his own feelings. In order to have strong intrapersonal perception, two elements must exist: goal setting and self-monitoring. Goal setting is a process involves establishing a set of realistic and measurable targets achievable within a specific time. Smith (2013, p. 20) pointed out that goal setting provides an individual with a long-term vision and motivates him to work towards the respective goals. As they focus on their goals, they will demonstrate optimistic characteristics and feel motivated to strive for their goals. According to Bressler’s study (2010, p. 39), individuals with high motivation levels show a strong desire to work harder and are more willing to face challenges in order to achieve their goals. Another element that must exist for strong intrapersonal perception to be achievable is self-monitoring. Pintrich (cited in Bercher 2012, p. 26) describes self-monitoring as a process by which people monitor and adjust their efforts in order...

Academic Success

...few simple steps can help students manage their lifestyle and continue academic success. Goal setting, thinking critically, understanding the writing process, and decision making are all steps to continuing academic success and avoiding road blocks. The first step to continuing academic success is goal setting. Setting S.M.A.R.T goals or goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely can help make a huge endeavor seem attainable. Psychologist Camille Rodriquez states that “any goals that students set should be meaningful to them, not just words on paper.” Students that take the time to truly understand what they want to accomplish and set goals to get them there are 83 percent more likely to achieve that goal. According to a study at the University of Michigan 70 percent of college students drop out because of lack of time and being burned out. Setting small attainable goals can help keep a student focused on something small that may not be as daunting as four years of school. Setting goals can help with time management and avoid the dreaded burned out feeling that leads to procrastination and failure. According to Professor Robert Phil of McGill University only 35% of full-time university students in the United States earn their degree in the expected 4 years; this figure rises to just 57% after 6 years. What this shows is that many students are not setting goals regarding their education and they are just taking classes to take them. Students...

Continuing Academic Success

...Success GEN/201   Continuing Academic Success Achieving success is something that many consider to be difficult, sometimes too difficult to be worth even trying. But there are many tools and processes available to help people be successful. By knowing what these tools and processes are, students are able to achieve not only academic success, but also be successful in many other areas of their lives. Setting goals is an important step in achieving success. By recognizing your goals, a person is able to comprehend what is truly important to them. Setting specific goals, rather than general goals, encourages people to work harder to obtain their goals. A few important factors in setting goals include tracking progress, goal importance, complexity of the goal, and commitment (Locke & Latham, 2006). In order to reach your goal, you must first ascertain whether that goal is realistic and achievable. Once you have established this, the next step is to formulate a plan with clear and consistent steps to help you reach your goal. The steps in the plan not only guide you down the path, but also provide encouragement to continue working toward goal achievement as each step is completed. The goals that you set can be in any area of life, including educational and career goals. For example, one educational goal for myself is to maintain no less than a B average in each of my courses. Of course, I would love to maintain an A average, but that goal is not as realistic and as easily achievable...

Strategic measures can be set to achieve the goals of the organization and to set alignment with what the organization is striving to achieve such as setting self achievable goals, the corporate goals, as well as department goals. (Roberts, A.) There is also an administrative standpoint, which relates performance appraisals from the outcome of the performance overview with supporting information which eventually determines the salary increases to be set forth, or benefits and recognition programs such as incentives or cash pay outs for a job well done. After the performance overview is completed there is a final step, which includes areas of improvement to benefit the company through future training and development in which areas the employee lacks. Within my current company, we refer to our performance management system as a Performance Management Process (PMP). Each quarter, our management sits down with all his/ her employees to engage with them on their personal performance being put forth. The first quarter is basically an overview of what organizational goals and personal goals management would like to see their employees incorporate within their work for future success. Goal setting is very important...

With the support of research by scholars across the globe we have found out which has been also proved through their theories that specifically in the professional arena, one of the major reason for the same is due to not being sure what they want to achieve in life and not setting formal goals for themselves. Goal setting is an important aspect in the process of thinking about the ideal future and helps business-people and professionals with long term vision and motivation. When it comes to leadership as Drucker said the leader is an ideal person who must set goal for the members of his team and himself to define what they are working on and what they are working for. We will further discuss through multiple theories including the importance of goals in motivation and leadership and relating the research to bring the outcome. Motivational Theories 1) Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Maslow wanted to understand as to what is it that motivates people and his belief included the fact that people possess a set of motivation system which is not something which is related to rewards and desires. Maslow(1943) specifically stated that everyone is motivated to achieve certain needs and when the first one is fulfilled the human mind seeks to fulfill the second need and the circle keeps going on like this.
