CheckPoint: Setting Goals

My first personal goal is to graduate with my Bachelors degree. That is a big deal to me. I am the oldest to my family and the only one of my siblings to not graduate college. To do this, my short term goals are to first get my associates degree. My deadline is to do this by the end of 2011. To do this, I must pass each one of my classes. I must set a deadline to accomplish this by the end of each class. I also must study hard to learn the material. If I do that, I will get my degree in 4-5 years.

My second goal is to start a family. My wife and I cannot have children of our own so we will have to adopt. To do this there are some classes we will have to take as well as inspections we will have to pass through our state. We have chosen to be foster parents. I cannot place a deadline on when we will actually be able to adopt a child because that is out of our hands but we can complete the other steps. We have decided to have all of the classes we need to have completed by the end of next year. We next wish to have the home study finished by May of 2012. We want to buy a house before that and we are saving up a down payment. We are on track to be able to purchase a home by October of 2011. By doing these things, we hope to be parents before we are each 35.

...Student Survival Guide Gen/105 February 7th Student Survival Guide There are many different ways that I can be successful throughout my journey with Distant Learning. I have chosen this route because dedicating my time to a nearby college means taking away from my children’s needs. There are many people out there that don’t take the time to teach their children the basics but my almost three year knows her ABC’s, numbers to twenty, a variety of animals and can write some letters. I feel that these past nine weeks have taught me to stay motivated so I can complete my degree. It has taken some time to adapt to taking classes online but it’s always good to challenge yourself with something new. Attending classes anytime during the day seven days a week along with help from my graduation team is going to help me achieve my goals. There are advantages and disadvantages to distant learning, but what makes it so manageable is not being afraid to ask for help when needed. I can contact my instructor whether it’d be through email or picking up the telephone. One disadvantage is for the students who are used to being in a classroom setting, learning best by seeing and hearing the instructor. It may take a little while longer for these students to adapt. I feel that being able to review feedback and assignments that have been posted has been really helpful throughout these past weeks, along with discussions with the other students. Being able to discuss with other students...

...Gen 105 week 4 Academic Honesty Found in the EBSCO data base I found an article titled “Honesty and Heroes”, I found this publication after using the the search term “Academic Honesty.” “Honesty and Heroes,” was published by Sara Staats, Julie M. Hupp, and Anna M. Hagley in July 2008 for the Journal of Psychology. I found that Paul Panek peer reviewed an early draft of this article. A second article “Academic Honesty and Online Courses” published in 2006 by Therese C. Grijalva, Clifford Nowell, and Joe Kerkvliet. “Academic Honesty and Online Courses” was also found using the EBSCO database. There is nothing provided to show this article has been peer reviewed. “Honesty and Heroes,” further explains the author’s theory on academic misconduct versus heroism. Academic misconduct and dishonesty is almost always an action committed by acting dishonest, says “Honesty and Heroes.” A student who chooses to be dishonest cheats; there for a cheater cheating weakens the credibility of a person and dis credits the degree earned. Essentially a degree obtained with cheating or other unethical effort lacks value. The idea behind “Honesty and Heroes” is there lays a similarity between heroism and academic honesty. The integrity of a student characteristics who make it a goal to succeed through the requirements presented will have formed the tools to succeed. ...specific searches. Upholding Academic Honesty According to www.dictionary.com (2009), plagiarism is the use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one's own original work. This includes self-plagiarism. It is school policy that all works be the student’s own original thoughts unless clearly cited. The University Library has tutorials on how to cite correctly in academic works. Plagiarism is a serious offence that carries serious consequences; for example, failure, suspension, or expulsion. To avoid plagiarism, I submit papers through the Plagiarism Checker in the CWE and adjust as-needed. Setting and Achieving Goals Setting goals is important as well as knowing how to identify them. Continuing Academic Success

... Sheri Coleman GEN/201 August 18, 2014 Lindsey Rudolph, Professor Continuing Academic Success According to Curran and Reivich (2011) “How does goal setting increase performance, achievement, and ultimately well-being” (p. 44)? In my opinion, academic success should be included in one’s model for achieving one’s career goals. While some believe continuing academic success is not required to obtain one's ultimate career goal, academic success is achieved by setting goals, fusing one’s learning style with lessons being taught, applying critical thinking skills and utilizing all available resources. During this first course of continuing my education, I’ve learned the tools necessary to become academically successful as well starting on the path to a successful career. Goal Setting Setting goals, leads to success because there’s a plan being put into motion. According to Lock & Latham 2002, “Research indicates that when an individual sets a goal that individual shows increased direct physical effort, cognitive effort on repeated task, self-reported subjective effort, and physiological indicators of effort” (p.44). Choosing the online course to continue my education allows me to move at my own pace. Setting goals is directive; goals reveal the path in which I need to follow. All of these actions lead to positive outcomes. (Curran & Reivich 2011, Lock & Latham 2002, Locke & Bryan 1969). Smaller and easier to attain goals should be set; this will...

Survival Guide

...Christopher J Sforza Gen.105 7/9/11 Student Survival Guide This general class has got to be one of the most helpful classes that I have ever taken in any schooling that I have been in. The way the techniques are brought about make it for such a much easier way to study, or to get a good comprehension on the material. For these 9 weeks I have used the majority of these techniques for both of my classes, and I would have to say it has really helped me study, and strive for good grades. The educational resources that are offered here on the Axia website are incredible. I have never been more impressed with how easy it is to locate and access everything. I was at a state university before this online journey, and the library and resources were so much harder to use and did not provide as many resources. When having to use the audio appendixes I would download them to my computer than transfer them to my cell phone. I would be able to listen to them anywhere I was, even while I was driving with my aux hookup from my phone to the car speakers. This program give you the tools you need to succeed, you just have to be smart enough to use them and not waste them. Alone, the library has so many different tools it is hard to use them all during the course of a class. To have all this information right in front of you on one website makes it 10 times easier than having to go to your local library. I still stick to the basic knowledge I learned in high school when it comes to doing research...

Career Plan: Reasoning Aptitude and Timeline

...Career Plan: Reasoning Aptitude and Timeline GEN/105 25 July 2013 Christopher Robinson Career Plan: Reasoning Aptitude and Timeline The goals that I have set to reach my career goals were first to find a college that fit my schedule. My second goal was that I needed to achieve a high grade point average while I was in school. My third goal was to obtain my Bachelor of Science in Business Management with a concentration in Supply Chain Management. My fourth goal was to find a job within my degree plan. My fifth goal was to become a manager of a major logistics company. Finding a College that fits my Schedule The specifics of my first goal were to locate a school that fit my schedule. I work a job that requires me to be away from home for days to weeks at a time. I needed a school that was flexible and accessible even when I was away. I looked into several colleges but only one appealed to me, and it was the University of Phoenix. This goal was not difficult because I knew what I wanted in a college and it aligned with my values. Some short term goals that helped me achieve this goal was first to narrow down my choices to 5 online colleges. I went online and just searched online colleges that had degrees in the field that I was looking to work. Another short term goal was to see which college was accessible away from home via phone or Ipad because I traveled a lot and the use of internet to my laptop would be little to none. I accomplished this task...

Personal Responsibility and College Success

...Personal Responsibility and College Success Dora Kareem GEN/200 February 6, 2012 Sara Martin Personal Responsibility and College Success Some students believe that outside forces control circumstances in school, and therefore, their grades. There is a direct correlation between taking personal responsibility of grades and college success. Limiting what outside negative forces have and bringing positive influences through time management and healthy choices will improve success greatly. Taking personal responsibility, a student can lead a healthy lifestyle and considerably improve college grades. Personal responsibility is taking accountability for actions, accepting the consequences that come from those actions, and realizing how to improve. Many times there are outside forces that try to inhibit success while in college. The duties and responsibilities required from work, family, social responsibility, and health can all interfere with choices for success. The hours at work, whether full-time or part-time do not always stop when leaving work. Sometimes work is brought home, putting in extra hours to complete the project instead of using good time management skills and delegation to get it done. Families are a full-time job and contain extraordinary obligations. Family responsibility does not stop when leaving for work, running errands, or have a night out with friends. When one’s child or spouse gets sick or an emergency happens, everything generally stops...

Child Depression

...Risk and Protective Factors for Depression: Implications for Prevention Depression in Children and Adolescents Linking Risk Research and Prevention Judy Garber, PhD Abstract: The National Institute of Mental Health has called for translational research linking basic knowledge about vulnerabilities that underlie mood disorders to the development of effective preventive interventions. This paper highlights research about risk factors for depression in children and adolescents and links it to current knowledge about interventions aimed at preventing depression in youth. Basic epidemiologic and clinical research indicates that increased risk for depression is associated with being female; a family history of depression, particularly in a parent; subclinical depressive symptoms; anxiety; stressful life events; neurobiological dysregulation; temperament/personality (e.g., neuroticism); negative cognitions; problems in self-regulation and coping; and interpersonal dysfunction. These vulnerabilities both increase individuals’ chances of encountering stress and decrease their ability to deal with the stress once it occurs. Although several existing depression-prevention studies have targeted one or more of these risk factors, the efficacy of these various prevention programs for youth with different combinations of these risk factors needs to be investigated further. Most existing depression-prevention programs in youth have used cognitive– behavioral techniques, with some success...
