Seung Sung battled with adversity at throughout his extraordinary life marked with resilience and the desire to do better for those he loved. Seung Hyun Sung was born on 22nd of September in 1958 in the aftermath of the Korean War. Born to a small open market business owner and mortgage broker, his mother and father worked to support their five children. Seung watched his parents struggle throughout his early life. His mother opened up various open market kiosks to try and bring income in. One after another, her business began to fail. After trial and error, her Korean sausage cart worked well enough to keep the family afloat as the Korean economy stumbled through the late 1950s and 1960s. Also, Seung viewed a U.S. citizenship as a ticket to live in a country with his wife and kids that provided him opportunities to succeed that South Korea never offered. With a sense of urgency, he sprinted through the citizenship process. Six months later, he proudly called himself a U.S. citizen.
For a while, Seung’s work life continued on without trouble. For months, he spent his days in the auto shop and nights at the supermarket. However his sister had a difficult time paying the bills with just a supermarket. So in order help pay the bills, she opened up a gas station. During the transition, Seung’s sister asked him if he could help out. He felt obligated to help because of his sister’s willingness to take him in when he immigrated to the United States. He flew back to South Korea and got married on November 16th, 1995. After a short honeymoon, he flew back alone to begin working at the USPS. Seung didn’t have the financial stability and savings just yet to support a family and his wife still needed a green card before moving to the States. Seung experienced smooth sailing after his first day at the post office. One year after getting married, his first son was born on November 1st, 1996 in Seoul, South Korea. His wife and first born immigrated a year after that, and moved into their new home that Seung spent his live savings
