Seven Wonders of 21st Century Architecture
You may not be able to name them all, but most people have at least heard of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World. Here’s a list with links: Great Pyramid of Giza, Hanging Gardens of Babylon, Temple of Artemis, Statue of Zeus at Olympia, Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, Colossus of Rhodes, and the Lighthouse of Alexandria . Of the seven, only the Pyramid remains, the rest we know of only through historic documents.[1]
There have been other “7 Wonders” lists and in 2007, the Swiss government sponsored a project to create a new list, with selections made by popular vote. Over 100 million votes were cast, and the new 7 Wonders were announced as follows: Chichen Itza (the Yucatan, Mexico pyramid), Christ the Redeemer (Brazil’s enormous statue of Jesus), Colosseum (Rome’s arena of Gladiators),Great Wall of China (you can see it from space!),Machu Picchu (ancient city built on an unbelievably high mountain top in Peru),Petra (Jordan’s city cut directly into the side of a stone mountain ),and the Taj Mahal (India’s majestic temple/mausoleum).[2]

But my final Cyber Journey of the semester started not as a stroll through history, but as a trip into the future of arts and Architecture with a look at another “7 Wonders” list – The 7 New Wonders of the 21st Century [3], as selected by Architecture, an online review published by the website Quazen. With no further ado, here are the 7: * Millau Viaduct http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millau_Viaduct At a height of 1,122 feet, and a span of 1.6 miles, this bridge holds the record as both the longest, and the tallest cable-stayed bridge in the world. In addition, it is a beautiful work of architecture, and the support beams resemble ships at sail. http://images.businessweek.com/ss/06/01/wonders_bigdigs/image/millau_viaduct.jpg * San Francisco Federal Building http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Francisco_Federal_Building More than just work of art, this entry earns it place because the entire building has an computerized environmental skin which senses the ambient weather, and adapts the internal temperature accordingly. http://nielsenuy.files.wordpress.com/2010/06/sf20federal20rendering.jpg * Chanel, Tokyo http://vimeo.com/1884314 Over 700,000 LED lights on the facade transform this structure from a department store into a massive, 10 story, flat panel video monitor. Watch the video!

* FieraMilano http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiera_milano An immense complex of 9 buildings that comprise a vast trade fair and exhibition center, joined together by central glass and steel skywalk that runs over 1300 meters long . This makes the skywalk, if stood on end, more than 57% taller than the tallest building ever constructed (The Burj Khalifa, 828 m ) http://www.europeanarch.eu/images/events_newworld1.jpg * The Reichstag Building http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reichstag_(building) This historic building is now a modern marvel, operating as its own generator, fueled by vegetable oil, and which stores excess heat in an underground water reservoir. The glass dome is a self-contained environmental unit, letting natural light in, and cycling warm air out. German engineering at its finest! http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/1/1f/Reichstagsgebauedebeinacht.jpg/800px-Reichstagsgebauedebeinacht.jpg * Wembley Stadium http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wembley_Stadium Though it would only rank 14th in size of North America stadiums, Wembley is the 2nd largest stadium (by capacity) in Europe. But the reason it made the list of”7 Wonders” is not because of its seating capacity. There is a free standing ach that spans the stadium, and at 315 meters is the longest unsupported arch in the world. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/68/Wembley_Stadium%2C_illuminated.jpg * Taipei 101 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taipei_10 At the time this list was compiled, the Taipei was the world’s tallest building. Unfortunately for the accuracy of this list, the Taipei 101 has been surpassed in height by the Burj Khalifa, a sky scraper built in Dubai. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burj_Khalifa
T-http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/c9/Taipei101.portrait.altonthompson.jpg/248px-Taipei101.portrait.altonthompson.jpg

B- http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/2/2f/Burj_Khalifa_building.jpg/250px-Burj_Khalifa_building.jpg

This demonstrates the difficulty in creating a “7 Wonders of the Future” styled list. The past is static, but the future changes with each new day.Have fun searching the “7 Wonders” of architecture, past and present, and for the last time, have a great Cyber Journey!

...Mughal Emperors. Influenced heavily by the concept of Persian Gardens or the charbagh, these gardens drew heavily upon Persian style of architecture. The common features that all Mughal Gardens share is the rectilinear layouts within the walled structure with canals, fountains, pools of running water and several species of shade providing trees , flowers, fruits and aromatic grasses. No other emperor is credited with taking the garden architecture and floral designs to the height as Shah Jahan the pinnacle of which was reached when he constructed the sprawling funeral paradise Taj Mahal in Agra to commemorate his beloved wife Mumtaj Mahal. But in this write up we are not going to talk about the Taj Mahal. Instead we’ll focus on some of the other but equally impressive Mughal Gardens in Kashmir which the Mughal adopted as their summer capital. So read on about the top Mughal Gardens in Kashmir that you must visit if you are planning your tours to Kashmir. Nishat Bagh A garden of bliss, a garden of joy, a garden of delight, whatever one chooses to call it, Nishat Bagh in Srinagar is exceptionally beautiful in every sense of the word. If one looks back in the pages of history, the Mughal era is likely to feel the most dominating one in Kashmir. After dethroning the mightiest of kings, these rulers of Persia set their foot in Kashmir in the 16th century. It was the sheer beauty of the valley that enticed them to conquer and rule. The glory days came with Jahangir, who was an avid art...

...civilizations. The first will be the Mesopotamian civilization, the second the Egyptian civilization, and the third and final destination the Roman civilization. Prehistoric/Mesopotamian Civilization Well it is time to take a seat, strap on my seatbelt, and set the dials for my first stop the Mesopotamian civilization and on this journey, my destination in this civilization will be the Ziggurat of king Urnammu (Nanna), and it is an architectural piece of art. Hey if you get a little nauseas, there is a barf bag in the seat pocket, for the first timers, off we go. The Great Ziggurat of Ur is an ancient Sumerian ziggurat in Dhi Qar Province, Iraq. The Sumerian King Urnammu (Nanna) and his son Shulgi built the ziggurat in approximately the 21st century BC during the Third Dynasty of Ur, in dedication to the moon God Nanna. They were believed to be dwelling places for the gods and each city had its own patron God. Only priests were permitted on the ziggurat or in the rooms at its base, and it was their responsibility to care for the gods and attend to their needs. The priests were very powerful members of Sumerian society. Ziggurats usually found in the center of villages. This structure-constructed in ca. 2500-2050 BCE of sunbaked mud brick. The massive step pyramid measures 210 feet (64m) in length, 150 feet (46m) in width and more than 100 feet (30m) in height. As I walk through the halls of this temple, I believe it reveals that the creator wanted closeness with the God he...

...Here the myth is said as a history but the factual reality is left behind. Perennial philosophy: The perennial philosophy says about the whole world’s religious traditions as sharing a single, universal truth on which the foundation of all religious knowledge and doctrine has grown. In the perennial philosophy the several representations of different countries such as kundalini of India where the seven chakras represents seven energies present around the spine, Greece and the Caduceus / Homer and the Odyssey, Egypt and the Uraeus-Cobra & vulture, South America’s the oroburos, Chinese Dragon and the European alchemy which representation has different meaning has been discussed. Europe and Christianity: The Catholic doctrine teaches that Catholic Church was founded by Jesus Christ. It interprets the Confession of Peter as acknowledging Christ's designation of Apostle Peter and his successors to be the temporal head of his Church. In 380, Christianity became the state religion for Roman Empire till it falls. In the seventh century, Islam came into existence and till...

...India of my dreams is a place where there’s an IIT  for every Harvard and a Narayan Murthy for every Bill Gates. Where youngsters don’t hop aboard a plane to US for their dream job, rather stay back in their homeland  and work for its welfare. An India, where those not related by blood are united by beliefs. By their love & not separated by faith or color; where it’s not a crime to wed out of ones community, where millions aren’t stashed in Swiss accounts rather with every individual. India of my dreams is such a place where each Indian truly believes that ,”Saare Jahan Se Achha Hindustan Humara.” “Be proud that you are an Indian, proudly claim I am an INDIAN”, these are the words of Swami Vivekananda. India-my motherland, with its mighty Himalayas looks like a golden bird flying high all above the sky with its cultures, traditions and with many advanced developments in science and technology. I am very proud to be an Indian. I love my country and I want to be the best in the world. I wish that my country should become a great nation with its talent and capability. I have a sweet little dream for my motherland. People in India should be self-sufficient in food for which we have to make the barren lands productive. New varieties of seeds and modern tools should be used for agriculture which is the backbone of Indian economy. The India of my dreams is a corruption-free nation. Beggary should be abolished; government should be people-friendly and citizens should...
