The Christian religion has a large influence on the beliefs about premarital sex and how important it is for men, women and anyone of other sexual orientations to refrain from sexual activity until they are properly married. The beliefs in this are still strongly engrained in many Christians today; many of my friends have these beliefs and wear purity rings, although it was much stronger in the past. Over the past two or three decades there has been a steady decline in support for the traditional beliefs about premarital sex, since about the 1960s, it has become more widely accepted in Western countries to have sex before marriage but not as accepted in Eastern countries as they still hold very strongly to. Research in the area of belief of premarital sex in Christians has uncovered that when it comes to conservative Protestants they have much stronger traditional attitudes to the belief of premarital sex and hold onto it much stronger than mainline Protestants and Catholics.
