Topic: BDSM

1. What did you learn today?
I recalled the first time I encounter the term ‘SM’ is when I accidentally got a wax burn on skin in Mid-Autumn Festival. My friends joked about it and said it was a kind of ‘SM’. Public knowledge on BDSM is only confined to Sadism where practitioners inflict pain on others in order to get sexual pleasure. After this session, however, I realized there are a broad variety of practices under BDSM such as bondage and role-playing with one being dominant and another being submissive. Those are activities that are not necessarily involving physical pain. BDSM is an umbrella term for many practices other than just sadism. They are all regarded as ‘kinky’ sexual behavior but they all have one thing in common - the utter emphasis on safety. The guiding principle in BDSM community includes safe, sane and consensual. Majority of people associate BDSM with violence, dangerous and self-destructive activity. On the contrary, they place a lot of importance on safety issues. Thorough communication about the medical condition, limits and preference need to be conducted before engaging in the activity. Safe words have also be developed in the community – for example, green to mean ‘Okay’ or even ‘More’, yellow to mean ‘Slow down’ and red to mean ‘Stop the scene immediately’. As BDSM is somewhat very private in bed, whether normal or kinky, it can however lead to legal consequences even though it is performed in consensual manner. In September, 2010, the Swedish court ruled that a 32-yer-old man was guilty of undertaking BDSM with a 16-year-old woman despite the age of consent in Sweden is 15.( The Local, 2010) BDSM is also becoming more mainstream and prevalent nowadays. People are generally more open-minded and receptive to BDSM than in the past. With the newly published book ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ and music video featuring BDSM (‘S&M’ by Rihanna), BDSM is no longer a complete stranger to many.

2. Anything surprised or shocked you?
Like LGBT, BDSM also has an underground community in which they can share their experiences, views and get support from other members. However, they are less public and playing low profile than LGBT community so many people will not the existence of such community. Norms and values regarding the subculture is also communicated with all members to reduce the potential danger. (Kamel 1980, Lee1979) The BDSM community also provides public dungeon where instruments are provided and members are supervised when engaging in the activity so as to ensure safety. Both Kamel (1980) and Lee (1979) point out that risk is reduced through agreement on norms and values within the subculture. a public dungeon in New York

Also, I previously reckoned that BDSM is only popular in western countries as most of the media that portrayed the issue is from other countries other than Asia. However, the guest speakers from FetLife actually stated that there are a lot of Hong Kong people joining the community and share the same interests with them. Asian people are deemed to be far more conservative and seldom share their intimacy things with others. Ashamed to say, I would find it very selfish for people to act on BDSM and inflict pain on or humiliate others in order to obtain sexual pleasure in the past. I also thought that it is a deed of self-destruction for people being submissive. It can be very dangerous when the dominant one disregards the safety and feelings of another in order to satisfy his own sexual desire. Yet, I have learned that this case is very rare in BDSM community, as they will communicate thoroughly before the activity. They will show respect to their partners and avoid testing their limits and performing acts that they cannot sustain. Indeed, before obtaining consent to take part in the scene, SMers will already know the background and reputation of their partners. It is attributed to the small size of this community that reputation can be easily dented and circulated around all members if you violated their principle – safety, sane and consent. Those with bad reputation will hardly find potential partners in the future. This serves as a kind of ‘social control’ to safeguard the interests of all members in enjoying the activity without sacrificing their safety. (Brodsky, 1993;Kamel, 1980; Lee1979)

3. What view do you have of the BDSM practices you have learned about?
Bondage is to tie and restrain using rope, metal such as handcuffs or leather. The one who tie his or her partner can acquire visual pleasure and feeling the dominance by doing so. While for the one being tied up, he or she will get sexually aroused by feeling helpless and submissive. Tying someone up can be very dangerous if the materials used in binding are not soft. Also, practitioners should not be restrained for more than one hour as blood circulation problem may arise. Certain areas need to be avoided such as neck that will impair breathing. In view of its potential dangers, I think this practice requires a high degree of communication and people should be completely sober during the bondage. Dominance and submission is a wider concept, involving any activities that underlying a dominance/submissive relationship between the participants. Although sometimes these activities do not involve physical sufferings, communication between the participants beforehand is still very important. It is because, in my view, the relationship is a means to pursuit mutual pleasure instead of a chance for any one of the parties to exploit another. Therefore, both participants have to be clear to each other’s preference and acceptance to the activities involved, so as not to mentally traumatize any parties. As for Masochism and Sadism, which is to obtain pleasure by suffering pain and inflicting pain respectively, I think it is an acceptable means to pursuit physical pleasure, only when slight pain is involved. Although some people may get great pleasure from suffering or causing serious pain and physical damage, these activities may cause permanent trauma and should not be encouraged and endorsed. I appreciate the efforts the community has made to ensure the safety of members. Development of safe words and guidelines is of utmost importance in this practice. I think individuals taking parts in BDSM should develop a safe word system with their partners beforehand to insure the things they do during BDSM are not beyond each other’s acceptance.

4. In your view, are they sexual diversity or sexual disorder?
Kinky sexual preference is still generally regarded as a mental illness in many societies as they relate BDSM with pain and thus only people with self-destructive character will resort to such act.

Nevertheless, the members in the community are mostly normal without any psychological problems. There are members who are successful and professional in real life such as teachers, accountants and journalists in FetLife. Indeed, a recent research pointed out that people who take part in bondage are generally more mentally healthy than those who do not. They share characteristics like being more extroverted and considerate of others’ feelings. It may be due to the fact that BDSM can somehow release pressure accumulated in real life and channel their negative emotions through BDSM. With communication strongly stressed in the practice, they also learn the importance of taking other’s feelings into account. An article published in Journal of Sexual Medicine (Wismeijer & van Assen, 2013) indicated that past researches are problematic to conclude there is a link between BDSM and psychological problems, omitting other environmental factors that contributed to the psychopathy. While the BDSM is completely harmless to society and consensual, identifying BDSM practitioners as psychopath is not justified. It is just a sexual preference or lifestyle perused by people. Only forms of non-consensual sex should be consider as an abuse of power and therefore abnormality.

Topic: Pornography

5. Should pornography be better controlled than it is?
At this moment, publishing obscene materials is against the law unless the publishers have applied for exemption with the government while all child pornographic materials are banned. Therefore, basically, anyone ages 18 or above can legally gain access to print and non-print adult pornography. I think the current control is appropriate enough. Some believe the restricted age should be lowered, from 18 to around 16 because teenagers have sexual urges well before 18 and pornography may help provide sexual outlets, lowering chances of sexual offense or unsafe sex. However, teenagers under the legal age may not be aware of the practical function of pornography but project these fictional scenes to their real life and cause inappropriate behaviors instead. Therefore, the current legal age restriction is sufficient and reasonable enough to cater the issue. On the other hand, some propose to tighten the control, with some extreme proposition suggesting to ban all Internet pornography like the case in the UK.

This is not recommended because, first, as mentioned, pornography is a sexual release tools for people to healthily release their sexual tension; second, the pornographic industry employs thousands of people and banning the whole industry will certainly pose undesirable economic effects. Therefore, the current control on pornography in Hong Kong is efficient enough.

6. Are there people who need to be protected from pornography? If so, who, and why?
Children should be protected from pornography. It is because children are yet have full world knowledge and may be misled to objectify women as sex objects, which will cause an unhealthy concept about sex, interpersonal relationships and marriage etc. Moreover, children do not have sexual urges yet and hence do not need pornography as sexual energy releasing channel. If teenagers are exposed to pornography and start to have masturbatory behaviors too early, their physical development is likely to be hindered. Other than children, there should not be any groups which need particular protection from pornography as they are all above the legal age and should be responsible for their choices. However, some people do need protection in the industry. Some pornographic actresses are forced to work in the industry unwillingly due to various reasons, debts, drug problems, triad activities etc. There should be regulatory body to oversee the conduct in the industry to make sure no illegal arrangements are made in order to produce these pornographic materials. Also, some actresses may be unaware of the content of the production and accidentally sign up to traumatizing pornographic activities. There were cases that some violent pornographic production has caused permanent corporal damage to the actresses and criminal cases were filed. There should also be regulations and enforcement to prevent these kinds of production from taking place.

Sexuality and Gender

...Sexuality and Gender In this chapter , I"ll summarize the Gidden's chapter 12 entitled "Sexuality and Gender" whose main points are introduction of human sexuality and sexual behavior , what factors affect it , sexual orientation , causes of homosexuality , attitudes towards homosexuality , differences between definition of sex and gender , gender socialization and 2 main approaches to gender inequality; functionalist and feminist approaches. First of all , according to text , we can say that sexuality is personal subject and it is hard to explain it with exact words , but with biological basis , sexuality means that "female anatomy differs from that of the male."(Giddens, chapter 12) In addition to the explanations of biologists , medical researchers and sexologists about human sexual behavior, we can also see another view that comes from scholars which is looking to the animal world to understand the human sexual behavior. However, Steven Rose claimed that , in contrast to most animal , not only genetically programmed insticts , but also environment shape the human behavior even more than their genetics do , and Rose also stated that humans learn more from their experiences thanks to having exceptionaly long infancy relative to animals . Secondly , there are social influences on sexual behavior . In all societies , heterosexuality , i.e "looking to the other sex for emotional involvement and sexual pleasure" is considered to be the basis of marriage ...

Gender Roles and Sexuality

...Gender Roles and Sexuality in Popular Media In this week assignment, an analysis was asked to be conducted on two website. The websites were cosmopolitan.com and maxim.com. I was asked a series of questions on each of the websites and how they appear and divulge information based on gender in today’s media. On Cosmopolitan I went to the website and found out a lot of information. The message that was contained in cosmopolitan was one that empowered women to explore their partners on a deeper level and expand their knowledge on that. I went through the cover and the model was dressed and the articles were more inclined to have women and men read them. I found that cosmopolitan went more into more of what women are into love, fashion, food and popular culture. Cosmopolitan to me was more focused on romantic relationships and find love more than just sex. While reading the website it was more in tuned on how to help women be happy and stay happy with their partners. I read a couple of articles and enjoyed them and I hope they can make me a better partner to my wife. I like cosmopolitan and the things they talked about and the way product is made. On Maxim I went to the website and the first thing that popped up was a woman in nothing but lingerie, I was not interested or intrigued to go any further into this website. The first I was thought was “this is going to be all about sex and nothing more than that.” I went in to the website and the message was clear it was about selling...

Constructing Gender and Sexuality

...Constructing Gender And Sexuality Chapter Study Objectives What Is Sex? Gender is not only the physical but also the behavioral personality traits that a group considers normal for its members. Essentialist and Constructionist Approaches to Gender Identity • Compare and contrast the essentialist and constructionist approaches to gender identity. ==> The essentialists believes that there can only be two categories, male or female, there is no exception. However constructionists believe that gender isn’t a dichotomy and that there can be more than two categories, and different ways for explaining them. Essentialists typically reside outside of sociology, usually in medicine, theology, and biology. Constructionists are typically mainstream sociologists. Gender Inequality • Explain the possible origins of gender inequality according to the text. ==> Back in the day when men had to go out and procure food, they needed to be bigger and stronger. They were needed for this vital role. Women were built to be nurturing so they could stay back with their offspring and keep them safe while the men hunted. The two rules were crucial for survival. • Compare and contrast functionalist theory and conflict theory in their approaches to explaining gender inequality. ==> Functionalists theory says that sex determines which roles men and women...

Gender, Sexuality and Visual Representation

...Gender, sexuality and visual representation Introduction Artist Mary Stevenson Cassatt, who shared the revolutionary ideas of artists such as Degas and Monet, was born on 22 May 1844 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Although women were not encouraged to pursue a career, Mary enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts at the age of sixteen. She quickly felt frustrated by the male faculty and students who were patronising and resentful of her attendance. Regardless of these obstacles and her father’s disapproval of her career choice, she continued to pursue art and painting. Cassatt, an impressionist painter, did not conform to standard male images of women and therefore her paintings differ from the more general male representations, especially of women readers during the Victorian period. Cassatt expresses her world through women and therefore “…offers a new vision of the unconsidered facts of everyday bourgeois life…” (Yeh, 1976:359). Cassatt’s work is regarded by Yeh (1976:359) as women-centred art as she regards women as complete within themselves. In her work she represents women as independent, pursuing interests which are not necessarily directed toward the need of her family. Reading women, portraying the reader’s inner strength often occur as a theme in her paintings. Femininity in the Victorian era In the latter Victorian period women artists and their work were considered inferior. In an attempt to overcome the stereotypical female image their...

Gender and Sexuality in Crime Tv

...The portrayal of gender and sexuality in crime television has evolved over the past six decades. Some aspects stayed the same while others have changed for various reasons, ranging from changing stereotypes to the media. Indeed we are living a new era, one in which women are gradually moving away from their gender role, strongly depicted in the 50’s and 60’s. However, the media's power lies in its popularity and the palatability of what it presents to the audience – ratings and financial gain matter more than change. In the past women in crime television series had never been portrayed as the heroes who save the day, but as either the woman who stood behind the male police officer, a paralegal or secretary who helps out with the investigations, or, most commonly as the victim. In the same way, homosexuals and transgenders were hardly ever depicted in these crime television dramas and if they were, they were dramatically stereotyped for comic effect or portrayed as promiscuous and having addictive tendencies. Times change and so do the content of the shows we continue to watch. I plan exploring the portrayal of women in the crime television dramas, CSI: Miami (2002) and Law and Order: Special Victims Unit (SVU) (1999). Although women have come a long way since the late nineteenth century in changing the way they are perceived at home and in the workplace, sometimes some people cannot help but automatically link a woman to subservience. Once upon a time, a woman involved in solving...

Gender And Sexuality In The Film, Southern Comfort

...In the film, Southern Comfort, a prominent idea that was portrayed throughout was the intolerance of people perceived as “different.” The town that they lived in seemed pretty rough, so the group banded together to support one another. They also did a good job of breaking down the barrier of the socially constructed views of gender and sexuality. When Robert said something along the lines of “gender and sexuality is much more then your genitalia.” I believe the film did a good job of portraying the intolerance and people, specifically dying people, just because they are “different.” Metacognition is essentially another form of the Law of Attraction, and I am a big fan of both. The Law of Attraction is the concept that “like attracts like,”...

Evolution of Sexuality, Gender and Feminism in Cyber Culture

...Evolution of Sexuality, Gender and Feminism in Cyber Culture Within the ever-evolving cyber world, in which many people find themselves living, there are traditional aspects of a previous culture which are re-emerging with technological advances. There are changing expectations of almost all themes and ideas in life, including gender and sexuality that are emerging with different notions and concepts which accompany them. In Neuromancer, by William Gibson, gender and sexuality of cyber culture are themes which are redefined and addressed throughout the novel. Through these new definitions of sex and gender, which are modified by technological advances, feminism, sexuality and the male-female binary are altered and take on entirely new meanings, which represent the decline of some aspects of humanity. Beginning with sexuality, there were very strict definitions of sexuality in our culture before it was exposed to an internet and cyber infested world. There were expectations and notions which existed prior to the emergence of cyber culture. These concepts are discussed and depicted in Gibson’s Nueromancer. There are many scenes which show this evolving and changing notion of sexuality of the future; the most memorable would most likely be the scene where Riviera performs a sexual scene to an audience including Armitage, Molly and Case. He uses his hands and mind to paint a picture of a woman, which he is having sex with; the woman is Molly. Riviera is able to paint a vivid...

Catholicism and Hinduism: Stands on Gender, Sexuality and Violence

...Catholicism and Hinduism: Stands on Gender, Sexuality and Violence 1. Introduction This essay aims to compare and contrast specific aspects of Catholicism and Hinduism, more specifically their stands on gender, sexuality and violence. Catholicism and Hinduism are two of the world’s greatest religions; the former originated in the west and spread across the world whereas the latter is followed primarily in the Indian subcontinent and to some extent in the Southeast Asian states. Catholicism and Hinduism are essentially different in their approach towards god and religion; Catholicism believing that there is one deity, and Hinduism on the contrary recognizes the existence of many. Two essential points of Christianity, particularly sin and salvation, aren’t present in Hinduism. The two religions nevertheless have several points of similarity. Hindus worship a number of gods and Catholics worship several saints; both of them make use of the burning of candles and incense before the statues for purposes of worship. Both religions make use of images, icons, music and rituals. Catholics chant prayers, whilst Hindus chant mantras; both of them have tremendously wealthy temples, full of statues and golden artefacts and make use of priesthoods that intermediate between humans and gods. Such similarities and dissimilarities notwithstanding, these two religions have distinct and deeply entrenched religious ethos and epistemologies that govern their practice and the attitudes, approaches...

How Are Gender and Sexuality Significant to the Study of Visual Culture?

...university of essex | SC291-5-FY | How are Gender and Sexuality Significant to the Study of Visual Culture? | | Word Count: 2,312 | 1004894 | How are Gender and Sexuality Significant to the Study of Visual Culture? In this essay I plan to explore the meanings that are found within the concepts of gender and sexuality and the presentation to which they are given in all types of visual culture. I wish to look into the reasons behind the current stereotypes of gender and sexuality which are used in day to day life. The origins of such clichés and the reason why stereotypes are so heavily used in visual culture, to try and understand the disadvantages and advantages they bring to the media. I will begin by trying to give an explanation of the definition of the terms, gender, sexuality and visual culture. Gender is often depicted to a simple non-complex term which is based upon an individual’s biological sex. Thus presenting the theory that the sex of an individual will biologically predetermine their mannerisms and actions; behaviours that are associated with being male or female. Although it is necessary to understand that there are differences between men and women, to assume that all behaviour can be categorised as male or female could be considered to be ignorant. In more recent times gender has become less fixated upon the biological sex of the person and is more determined by the individual themselves (Kirsch, 2000). Sexuality is the term used to demonstrate the type...

...emotionless and seems like he’s never fully present except in a few scenes. It is interesting to note that the word gay or homosexual is never used in the play. Only the word ‘queer’ is used. You think me an’ Skipper did, did, did! -somody!ʼ-together?” The fact that Brick gets so uptight when the subject is brought up and that he even stutters shows that it’s a touchy subject and that Brick was hiding something. It must also be noted that the time in which the play was set (mid 40’s-50’s) plays a great role in why Brick was hiding his sexuality. In those time the idea of being homosexual was hardly a thought and was never even brought up, so of course Brick denied his sexuality several times when questioned about it. Gay Lingo

...Gay Lingo Introduction Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people in the Philippines have a distinctive culture but limited legal rights. Gays and lesbians are generally tolerated, if not accepted, within Filipino society, but there is still widespread discrimination. The most visible members of the Filipino LGBT culture, the Bakla, are a distinct group in the Philippines. According to the 2002 Young Adult fertility and Sexuality Survey, 11% of sexually active Filipinos between the ages of 15 and 24 have had sex with someone of the same sex. Filipino poet and critic Lilia Quindoza Santiago has speculated that Filipino culture may have a more flexible concept of gender because kasarian, the Tagalog word for "gender", is defined in less binary terms than the English word gender. Kasarian means "kind, species, or genus”. The English word gender originally also meant "kind". In the Philippines, the term gay is used in reference to any LGBT person. For Filipino gays, the Tagalog phrase paglaladlad ng kapa ("unfurling the cape"), or more commonly just paglaladlad ("unfurling" or "unveiling") refers to the coming-out process. Tibo, T-Bird and tomboy are derogatory terms for butch lesbians just as bakla is for effeminate gay men. Some lesbians, both butch and femme, use the terms magic or shunggril to refer to themselves. Neutral slang terms for gay men include billy boy, badette, bading, and paminta (straight-acting gay man). ...

Embodying the Gay Self: Body Image, Reflexivity and Embodied Identity

...Copyright © eContent Management Pty Ltd. Health Sociology Review (2010) 19(4): 437–450. Embodying the gay self: Body image, reflexivity and embodied identity DUANE DUNCAN Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society, La Trobe University, Melbourne, VIC, Australia ABSTRACT The emphasis on a sexualised muscular body ideal in gay social and cultural settings has been described as facilitating body image dissatisfaction among gay men. Drawing on a concept of reflexive embodiment, this paper uses qualitative interviews to analyse gay men’s embodiment practices in relation to discourses and norms that can be found across and beyond any coherent notion of ‘gay subculture’. The findings reveal body image to be more complex than a limited focus on subculture or dissatisfaction can account for. In particular, gay men negotiate a gay pride discourse in which the muscular male body generates both social status and self-esteem, and deploy notions of everyday masculinity that imply rationality and control to resist gendered assumptions about gay men’s body image relationships. He was the first openly gay person to be elected to public office in the state of California. Going forward with these questions: I feel that people should not be arrested for being gay, everyone has a right in this country to be an outspoken. It's one thing for our laws and another for God's Laws. With that we are not to judge of what is happening on earth when it comes to God's Law. Harvey and Scott shows their affection in front of the store, because another business man had warned them about being openly gay people will be arrested and maybe placed out of business. Not just people were carrying whistles, but Gay people were carrying whistles to warn other gays of police or any type of mob that came into the streets. There were a few things why Harvey got elected after his few failures, he used Anita Bryant's crusade that provided to gays to group together in other parts of the country, used the expertise of Ann Kronenberg to spread in newspapers of his vision and to bring hope in the state. When gays were coming out her reaction was to start a crusade in Dade County to protect homosexuals from getting jobs and housing.
