Among researchers, there is a growing consensus that adolescents live in a “media-saturated world” and are more likely to be exposed to sexual content frequently among various types of media (i.e. the internet, social media, music, books, television, etc.) (Peter, Jochen and Patti Valkenburg 2007). As a result, researchers are less likely to research adolescents and the effects of social media without using more than one source. Brown describes these types of frequent publicly over-sexualized atmosphere as being the adolescent’s sexualized media environment and is based on the three assumptions that categorize this type of surrounding: 1. “There is an unprecedented amount of sexual content in the media” (i.e. television). 2. “This sexual content is pervasive and not limited to a single medium” (i.e. social media, …show more content…

Many magazines are read specifically for their sexual content (i.e. People Magazine), and readers are confronted with provocatively clad women or nude models (i.e. Playboy) and open discussion regarding sexual techniques or relationship advice (i.e. teen magazines). Similar to popular magazines and racy television show, internet browsers such as Google can easily lead adolescents to pornographic sites and videos with one simple search (Cooper, 2013). Also, music videos are found to be highly provocative and suggestive if the lyrics are not openly provocative enough (i.e. Nicki Minaj - Anaconda). Researchers have analyzed trends in current top hits displayed by Billboard 100 and have found that sexual songs have become more explicit over the decades. As the internet becomes more prevalent in societies world-wide, advertisements air more frequently on television, and books such as “50 Shades of Grey” become a world-wide phenomena, adolescents are becoming highly desensitized and accustomed to sexual content.
