Shelby Eatenton-Latcherie, a sweet young woman of 25 years old, is ecstatic to marry her soon-to-be husband. Shelby has always loved children and being active in her community, much to M’Lynn’s, her mother’s, worry. While getting her hair done at Truvy’s, Shelby suffers from a seizure; it is later revealed that Shelby is a diabetic. After this episode, the day carries on as before, and the duo and their beloved friends carry on with their joy over Shelby’s marriage. Time moves forward into December, and the women are back at Truvy’s salon. The scene opens with M’Lynn and Shelby, who first make small talk. After a friendly exchange of words, Shelby reveals some news that alarms her mother: she is pregnant. Much to her dismay, M’Lynn has an argument with Shelby over her daughter’s health. In response, Shelby assures her safety and reaffirms her desire to have a child, even if she only as “thirty minutes of wonderful.” In the end, M’Lynn wearily accepts her daughter’s decision.
