Short Essay on Christology
Some believe that Jesus Christ could not have been God because he was just a man. Jesus himself claimed to be one with the Father and that the Father was one with him. It is true that he was both man and God. Yes he was born from the womb of a natural mother but he was conceived by the Holy Spirit and not a natural father's seed. There is no doubt that Jesus lived on the earth as a physical man. We have all read that he was born in a manger, that he was a carpenter, he had a ministry and traveled from place to place. Also that he was tempted by hunger and the temptations of a normal man. We even read that he feared death and sweat blood. He clearly was a physical man in the same world we live in.
Even though he was surely a man. There wasn't, isn't and won't ever be another man like him. He was born from a virgin and conceived by the Holy Spirit, not a worldly father. He lived a sinless life from day one. Without a supernatural connection with the father He could not have done the things that he did. He knew the will of the Father and his Human life was bound by that Will. He performed miracles and he forgave sins. These are not things a normal man can do. Jesus would refer to himself as the Son of Man which is a heavenly figure according to the book of Daniel. Jesus had a heavenly authority on the earth and he walked and talked like it. He let people worship him and he was able to forgive their sins as well. Not to mention the numerous miracles he performed, such as casting out demons, healing and more. The fact that Jesus Christ is both man and God is very evident for all to see.
The union of Jesus' humanity and deity is called hypostatic union. This mean that Jesus had the body of a man, the temptations of a man and all the regular things a worldly man should have completely separate from his deity. Which is where his authority and power comes from. They do not mix yet they reside in the same being to make him both God and man. Yes, this is quite mind boggling and I will tell you without the power and supernatural nature of God this hypostatic union could not be possible but we serve a God of all power and possibilities.
We have sinned against God the father and yet he has created a way to redeem us. God is just, so he must Judge Sin but he loves us with an everlasting, amazing love. God found himself in a bad position needing to judge our sin, yet not wanting to destroy us. In comes Jesus born of a virgin as a mortal man but her had a mission. The wages of sin are death and the price of sin must be payed in blood. Jesus had to come as a man to put himself in the position to take our punishment. To fulfill the scriptures. He had to come, die, be buried and be resurrected the third day and since he was without sin. His pure and perfect blood that was shed can cover us and our iniquity. He has become our savior by going through all the same things that man has gone through, temptations and all and he did not fail. Now he is our advocate with the father sitting on his throne in heaven.
Denying that Jesus is both God and man is denying the bible. This can lead to a slippery slope of false doctrine and you could end up in a false form of Christianity. You must stay true to the word and realize that he truly was both God and man together anything else is heresy. Some would argue that Jesus is inferior to the Father God. Or that he cannot possibly be both God and man or that one is just a part of the other. That he is God but and his manhood is just a part of his deity but they church finally came to the conclusion that hypostatic union is the answer.
Jesus Christ to me is the most amazing human being ever to walk the planet earth. He is everything I want to be. He was a hard worker who worked with his hands. He was bold! He was angry but didn't not sin. He had more love in him then I can ever fathom seeing in a human being. He layed down his life for the truth, for righteousness. Of course he wanted to go do his own thing. He sweat blood at the thought of his crucifixion. Yet he made the greatest sacrifice you can ever make in this world. That one man would lay down his life for another. I thank him for it. I worship him for it and I will lay down my life for others to honor his sacrifice that he made for me.
