The rise and fall of one of the most powerful dynasties in the Korean history, the Silla Dynasty. From the very beginning of the establishment of the kingdom, Silla had conflicts with other two neighboring kingdoms, Koguryo from its north and Paekche, which was located to its west. However, after years of battles between these three kingdoms Silla was successful in conquering other two kingdoms, and emerged three of them under Silla Dynasty. This gave the Korean society sense of nationality for the first time and provided Silla Dynasty massive power over the peninsula. In this essay I will discus the fact that Buddhism played major role in both rise and fall of the Silla Dynasty.

First of all, the main factor that helped Silla Dynasty to gain …show more content…
Commoners were tired of the traditional Hwam Buddhism because of its inaccessibility, as it was written in Chinese characters, local people did not have the time nor the money to learn Chinese so it was only available for the aristocrats. Pure land Buddhism was welcomed by the people of Silla because of it is” a faith which even the unlettered could understand and profess, for it was enough to repeat the chant”. But more importantly it was widely accepted by the society because of the antagonistic attitude that it had towards the traditional authority. Since the new concept of Buddhism emphasized the importance of individual intellectuality over worshiping the king. Therefore, local powerful people emerged into powerful groups and built their own army using their own resources which led the society to …show more content…
For example, members of aristocrat class were trying to break the throne’s power they ended up creating massive rebellion against them and the throne. Furthermore, some nobles who had the economic power and the ambition to rule the kingdom, started creating their own army which led the country to a period of chaos and uncertainty. Under these circumstance, several powerful families started controlling their regions and weakened the government’s authority over the peninsula both politically and economically “this shift in the locus of economic control over the countryside signified a growing erosion of the economic foundation of the central government”. The consequence of these events led the central government’s economy to a devastation, and drove the unified Silla kingdom into its end.
As a conclusion, it is impossible to neglect the importance of the Buddhism while studying both rise and fall of the Silla Dynasty. As it played a major role in unifying people of Silla under the king in the glory days of the dynasty, and in later Silla the new concept of Buddhism created an unbalanced society and led the kingdom to anarchy and

Three Kingdoms of Korea

...Korea is an important part of world history. This research paper will describe the three kingdoms of Korea, from 57 Before Common Era until 688 Common Era into the Unified Silla Kingdom period. The history and art from these periods will be discussed in order to show the impact it has had on the Korean culture. This paper will show the Influence China had when the Koreans created their empire and works of art. The Three Kingdoms period of Korea began in 57 BCE due, in part, to the Chinese occupation of the western peninsula. There were many tribes in Korea, prior to 100 BCE, when the Chinese fought and gained control of the western peninsula. The strongest of all the Korean tribes were migratory hunters known as the Koguryo tribe. (Korean Enigma, 2004). The Koguryo tribe was a difficult adversary for the Chinese and made it difficult to for them to keep their stronghold. The Chinese were forced to leave their three outposts in Korea, giving the territory back to the Koguryo tribe. The Koguryo tribe overtook the Chinese, Okcho and Ye tribes, and incorporated them into their own. The powerful Koguryo tribe continued battling the Chinese and eventually conquered half of Manchuria. (Korean Enigma, 2004). The Han Tribes also occupied Korea during this period. With the defeat of the Chinese, the Hans branched out and formed two separate kingdoms, Paekche and Silla. The Three Kingdoms of Korea included Koguryo, Paekche, and Silla. The three kingdoms had many similar characteristics;...

How Did Buddhism Change America

...Buddha Research Paper Throughout all of time the world has changed in many different ways. These changes occurred in the categories of architecture, intelligence, the human body itself, but the most important change is religion. Religion has changed in the way people depict their deity but the basic teachings of the specific religion remains the same. People may argue that the teachings have changed, which is true to an extent. The change is not necessarily a major change it is just the different ways that people interpret the teachings of their certain religion but the foundation of the teaching will stay the same such as "one shall not kill, commit adultery and steal". These are just some of the basic teachings in every religion. Although...

History Korea

...PART 1: INTRODUCTION The Korean peninsula is located at the eastern end of Asia, between China, Siberia (now part of the Russian Federation), and the islands of Japan. Because of the complex, shifting, and historic relations between these areas, as well as relations with other places such at the United Sates in more recent times, the history of Korea has been told in many ways and is still the subject of hot debate both inside and outside the Koreas. North and South Korea have different versions of the peninsula’s history, both of which differ in detail and perspective from histories written in China, Japan, Russia, and the USA. The following sections, which attempt to outline the history in a balanced way, are based on a variety of materials, including lectures attended in a special workshop on Korean culture at Korea University in the summer of 1997. Map of Korea The overall pattern of development in the history of the Korean peninsula is a process that begins with an unknown number of early tribal groups that populate the peninsula in prehistoric times, wandering out of Siberia and areas to the west. Over time, some of these groups form more complex societies that eventually result in early kingdoms that grow up on the peninsula; in some cases extending westwards into what is now Chinese territory. As time and events unfolded, these kingdoms were unified, though the borders and degree of unity have continued to change over time—down to today. Besides the obvious split between...
