The election of 1860 consisted of four candidates, Abraham Lincoln, Stephen Douglas, John Breckinridge, and John Bell. Each candidate had their own platform which they presented to the people. Abraham Lincoln won the election in 1860, however, John Breckinridge was the runner-up. Breckinridge's platform was that the Federal Government must protect slavery and territories, ultimately supporting the south and their stance on slavery.
