Quarter 1 Writing Assessment A person’s character determines their contribution to society because a person’s character affects the way they act towards themselves and others in society. I’ve come to this conclusion based on “Grit Ted Talk” by Angela Duckworth and To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. In the “Grit Ted Talk” Angela Duckworth explains that a person who perseveres understands that failure is not fixed, so they try again and again until until they achieve their goal. A person who perseveres not only perseveres in one aspect in their life, but perseverance carries over into any obstacle they attempt. Some might say that just because a person perseveres, doesn’t mean that they will use their perseverance for the greater good of others and society. A person may persevere in one aspect of their life, but it doesn’t mean they will always persevere. Atticus is a lawyer in the 1930s, he takes a case trying to defend an African American man and takes pride in his case, even when he faces ridicule. Atticus’s actions as a lawyer proved to society that not all African American men were bad, that he wouldn’t just stand there while someone was put in jail without a chance to be proven innocent. Although Atticus may be a brave man, To Kill a Mockingbird is told from Atticus’s daughter’s point of view. Looking through her eyes, she may have a bias towards her father since many children thought of their parents as the most amazing people in the world. Yes, the story was told from his daughter’s point of view, but other characters in To Kill a Mockingbird have given their opinions about Atticus. Other characters in the story have told Atticus that his actions as a lawyer have showed others that you should stick up for what you believe
