During the Chosun period, knowledge began to be passed around about Western culture and civilization through different sources such as books, newspapers, and people in the East. New knowledge about Western culture and influences soon spread through Korea from China. Intellectuals play a key role in voicing out their thoughts and opinions during this time of change, in which affected their writings on the position of how open they are to Western influences. Sin Hudam and Ikh’yon are similar in their writings in that they are against Western ideas and influences that go against Neo-Confucian teachings; between Ikh’yon and Chi Sogyong there is a contrast in their viewpoints with Ikh’yon believing that outside influences such as Western influences …show more content…
Sin Hudam was Yi Ik’s disciple who influenced him, however he did not believed that Yi Ik did not go far enough in condemning Catholic ideas and practices that went against Neo-Confucian teachings. Sin Hudam was concerned that Catholicism may be persuasive enough for Neo-Confucians to abandon Confucian teachings to join Catholicism. Sin Hudam believed highly in Neo-Confucian teachings in which it clearly shows in his writing European Values and European Education because he rejected any European teachings that contradicted to Neo-Confucian teachings and views. For example, Sin Hudam referenced Aleni’s writing in which the author stated that European people main principle is to nor and serve the Lord, fate is in the Lord and Heaven’s hands, and people should both fear and worship the Lord, he took up a position against it. Hudam stated that he agrees that fate is in Heaven’s hands, however he questioned whether this was the reason why men respect it and the Lord refuting the belief of doing something good one is virtuous enough to go
