Research Outline Think back to when you were a nine year old girl. When you were nine you wanted have sleepovers with your friends so you could paint each other nails, play in each other's hair and talk about the cutest boys in school. You would want to wear the prettiest clothes so you could have friends. Unlike Most nine-year-old girls Sister Thea wasn’t worried about friends, having fun, or who the cutest boy in class was. She decided to convert into Catholicism when she was nine. She grew up around priests, sisters and brothers. Bertha Elizabeth Bowman better known as Sister Thea urged the Catholic Church to embrace African-American culture. Sister Thea life was never boring she was always involved in something or was always teaching others. “By 1980 Sister Thea Bowman was one of the most well known African American Catholics in the United States.” (“American National Biography 2”). Her words made a powerful movement in the Catholic Church. “She served as the keynote speaker for Black Awareness Week in Oxford, Mississippi.” (“American National Biography 2”). Her powerful speeches reached world wide about intercultural awareness and her words were inspirational throughout the world. “Although she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1984, Sister Thea remained a vibrant presence in the U.S. Catholic community and As her illness progressed, she spoke and sang from a wheelchair.” (“American National Biography 2”).This is another example of how focused and hardworking is was.Even though she is diagnosed with cancer, she still continues to spread the word about African-American Catholics the best way she could.
