Brief Overview of Primary Sources

Leave it to Beaver, Season 1, Episode 12 “The Perfume Salesmen”, 1957.
Brady Bunch, Season 5, Episode 19 “Top Secret”, 1975

After watching an episode each of Leave it to Beaver and Brady bunch, I believe that these sitcoms would serve as relevant primary sources in determining whether 1963 was a turning point in American cultural expectations of women as housewives or career women.
In Leave it to Beaver I noticed that the women predominately stay in the home and complete tasks like cooking and cleaning while the men go to work outside the home. Women before 1963 wore dresses with a hem about ankle length, their hair was curled and pinned up and their makeup was flawless. Ward even referred to June as a housewife. She tended to wear an apron most of the day and was part of a women’s club that met at her house. The mother did most of the childcare while the father usually gave the punishment.
In contrast to Leave it to Beaver, the Brady Bunch showed higher hemlines, more women donned shorter hairstyles, and girls were seen wearing pants. After 1963, I noticed more of a co-parenting approach as opposed to individual parenting. Women appeared to be more outspoken in this time as well. Similar to Leave it to Beaver, Brady Bunch demonstrated the notion of separate spheres. The women of the Brady household tended to spend time as a group, including the maid. The boys did the same thing. I also noted an emphasis on togetherness in both sitcoms. Most of the scenes in both sitcoms showed the family as a whole rather than individual characters.
Overall I think these sitcoms are easy to access even if you are not on campus, they do not take long to watch, they are easily understood and also give us graphic detail of the time period that articles or books cannot give. They show women and how they interact with their families (facial expressions can often say more than words), These sitcoms allow us to see many different aspects of the culture of the time period: clothing, language, social relationships, etc.

...Movin’ On Up: Have Black Sitcoms Really Changed the Black Community for the Better? Through time, blacks in television have been able to abolish many of the pervious stereotypes from past generations. However as media progresses and blacks are becoming a more predominate part of American television, the effect of black sitcoms is being called into question when it comes to their effect on the black community. The early 70’s through the 90’s were the golden age for black sitcoms, both the good and the bad. Blacks were still portrayed as both ignorant, poor, mammy and uncle type characters in shows such as Good Times, Stanford and Son, and more recently, Tyler Perry’s house of Payne. However, many shows promoted the educated, independent, affluent black family such as The Cosby Show, The Jefferson’s, and A Different World. Do these shows truly have an effect on the black community, and even more importantly do they effect how the rest of America views them? For blacks portrayal on television perception is reality, many preconceived notions of how blacks act and carry themselves in everyday life have been eliminated, nevertheless, black sitcoms still reinforce stereotypes that have plagued the black community since the beginning of slavery. Background: * “From Mammy to Miss America and Beyond: Cultural Images and the Shaping of U.S. Social Policy:” A brief summery of the history of blacks on television and how this has effected the community in general. * In “Television...

Cosby Show

...Cosby Show is because it gave me hope. Growing up in the projects was not a joyful experience, although my parents did a great job with what they had. The Cosby Show depicted family in a very positive way. It provided an alternative to the stereotypical African American family. Unlike other black sitcoms such as “Good Times”, which always left you depressed after watching the show, “ The Jeffersons'', whose nanny was very loud and opinionated. The Huxtables were upper class people. Cliff Huxtable( Bill Cosby) was a doctor and his wife Claire( Phylicia Rashad) was a successful lawyer. The family structure was that of a nuclear unit or modern family. The gender roles of the parents were that of egalitarian. They were a two parent home with 5 children. They both balanced the responsibilities of supporting their children through work and quality time. The gender of the children were 4m girls and 1 boy. This particular sitcom went against the stereotypical gender roles for African Americans, especially the male. I'm sure this influenced a lot of issues. The gender roles of the children were displayed as your typical youth. If I were to read a book called “The Cosby Show” versus watching the sitcom, the nationality of the family would be unknown. Critics considered this...

Tryouts Persuasive Essay

... Imagine being in the championship game for your state basketball tourney, your school hasn’t won this tourney in twenty years and it's your turn to make history. There is one minute left in the game, it's tied 35-35. Your coach and team is in a dilemma, since this is a school sport, your coach promised everyone to play in every game. The coach put in the scrubs and the other team scores making it 37-35 and before you know it, the championship game and making history had just slipped through your fingertips.. Your school and town is devastated. It’s the scrubs fault for having to go in, and now everyone is mad. No kids should have to be in that situation. Tryouts would prevent that. If there were tryouts the coach could focus more on winning rather than making sure everyone gets in. People may argue that getting cut from the team can lowers one's self esteem. According to Jeffrey Rhoads : for those that are slightly younger, inexperienced or less skilled, smaller roles or waiting until next year will benefit them. Anyways, if the athlete wasn’t good at the sport, therefore the coach wouldn't play them as much. On most basketball teams coaches consider ten to fifthteen to practice, but play seven to eight in a game. For example, there was seventeen players on my volleyball team but only six could play at a time, and that ended with a fight and drama. A school sports team should be focused on winning, not fighting. School sports are about learning, but in order to have...

Dealing with Neighborhood Preservation

...Dealing with Neighborhood Preservation Mike Stephenson. EN3220-Written Analysis December 14th, 2012 Abstract This is a short paper on one of my few dealings with Neighborhood Preservation in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The issue they had with me was the fact that our house had chipped and peeling paint on the exterior trim. The rest of the paper includes what I did to resolve the issue they had with me. Dealing with Neighborhood Preservation This all started when one day coming home from our capstone class there was a piece of paper taped to the front door. The piece of paper was from the Department of Housing and Neighborhood Preservation/Code Enforcement Division. It stated they were conducting inspections in our area and that our property was found to be in violation. The violations were for chipped and peeling paint on the exterior trim of the house. If the violations were not corrected within thirty days then there is the possibility of being fined up to $2,500.00. Upon receiving this, I began to develop a step by step procedure to help resolve the issue, since most of my time was already being spent on work for our capstone class. The first step was to call and talk to the Code Enforcement Inspector. This step took almost a week to complete because we ended up playing phone tag with each other. Once we were finally able to catch each other, I was able to ask a few questions concerning the violations, time frame for completion, and to notify them of my...

...jumping from account to account. At first Mr. Malone did not see a reason to purse an investigation, but Mrs. Cooper decided that there was further investigation needed. Mrs. Cooper looked into the report and realized that something was wrong with the reports and confronted Mr. Bobbitt about the findings. Mr. Bobbitt in the audit committee would take a look and see if the findings that Mrs. Cooper were valid. After finding that the findings were valid she then contact Mr. Farrell and he did an external investigation. After further investigation that the mid-level accounting directors Mr. Normand had confessed to just going along with what Mr. Sullivan had explained to him about the reports because he was afraid to tell anyone and wanted to resign. He was afraid that if he told anyone that he would lose his job and had a family to support. When looking at WorldCom situation it was good that the internal auditor committee took charge of the situation when it was brought to them. That was very ethical and then to have the external auditors take over to review the matter was the right step. Now the fact that you had an accountant that your CFO making false reports and switching money around is not very ethical. Not only did your CFO bring another person into the fraudulent reports, but now an external investigation has to be done and reported. There will be hefty fines and jail time for people in the company that went along with unethical behavior. The accounting activity was...

Manhunt

...posted a manifesto on his social network page and on February 3, 2013 it all began! His first 2 victims had been shot and killed and there were more deaths to follow. Dorner was after any and all law enforcement and anyone involved with them and LAPD had no idea what else was in store. The manhunt lasted for a little over a week and authorities had no idea where he was or what his next move could have been. Somehow, they caught up with him finally and it all ended with a cabin on fire and Dorner allegedly dead. ABC 7 was not subjective, they reported the information they had, and the reporters did not seem to make subjective comments in the first report. Some information I found odd to be reported was the preschool Dorner attended. Has the reports continued, it started to seem like all the stations were being subjective in their reports. Fox 11 news was the most subjective; the reporters shared how terrible they thought the events were and hoped for Dorner’s capture. In both stations the information that was omitted or never spoken of in detail was how good of a person everyone knew Christopher Dorner as. There were people who wanted to share their experiences with him and who have known him for years and never thought of him as a killer, but apparently none of that mattered at this point. NBC 4 was the most objective, there were no opinions, and they reported the information they had. All news stations seemed to omit any good information on the suspect, but at that point they were...
