The Six Principles of Persuasion

Introduction
To persuade someone is to get them to do something or believe in something, that they previously did not believe. Our textbook outlined the following principles concerning persuasion: reciprocity, scarcity, authority, commitment and consistency, consensus and liking (McLean, 2011).

Reciprocity acknowledges that every good turn deserves another. It is the mutual understanding between persons that if something is given something is expected in return. For example, aids are provided to other counties in the event of a natural disaster or devastation of some kind because of this perceived mutual relationship. We are more likely to do something we have promised because it will benefit us. Most persons would not back out of a deal or a promise because it tarnishes their name. Getting a commitment out of someone is a great way to get them to do something; you can always say, “I promise” but with consequences, to the said actions of backing out, we will achieve the consistency we seek.

Consensus: In my culture we have a saying “Majority rules”. This is the principle of consensus if everyone thinks the product or item is great then it must be great. I have used this tactic a lot in sales. I would often say to customers “everyone likes this one” or “we just got it in and it is almost sold out” or “the reviews are great” it usually works. People are persuaded by the witness of others.

Liking: We generally say yes to the one we love. As a sales person if you are untidy and rude that is a deterrent, people generally do not gravitate or like persons who are unkept. I have experienced on the sales floor customers generally buying from the sales person who they like and the ones who look presentable. I have had situations where customers would come to the store and would sit and wait until I get back from lunch just because they like me. Whereas, listening, it relies on our ears, minds, hearts, and whole body. What do we hear first? Is it the message or oral sound? Do absorb what is being said or not being said?
