Generic Products vs Brand Name

...generic, you can always go back to the branded product. You can even buy popular brands from the past. But remember the power of brands. Since the same manufacturer of a brand-name product often makes the generic product with the same ingredients, what the company selling the branded item is selling is the perception of something better. Consumers don't buy generic products because they think it makes them look bad, said Jason Gurwin, CEO of Pushpins, a mobile coupon company. Over-the-counter medications.Since the Food and Drug Administration requires generic medications to have the same active ingredients as the patented medications they replace, over-the-counter medications are the best way to save money by buying generic. No one wants to skimp on their health, so you'd think that a generic brand might be iffy. But that's not the case, said Cathy Rosenbaum, a pharmacist and CEO of Rx Integrative Solutions, Inc. "There's a public perception that generics are cheap and bad," Rosenbaum said in a telephone interview with WalletPop. "Typically the generics are just as effective as the branded products,...

Apple Impasse

...want to keep your smartphone safe from scratches, spills, thumps, and drops, chances are high you'll be buying a thick, heavy case. There just aren't that many truly rugged phones around these days, and the few that do take a beating don't have all the smarts. Bridging these worlds is the Samsung Galaxy S5 Active. Its stronger physical design and same best-in-class specs as the Galaxy S5 make it a brawnier-than-average smartphone to pocket. Still, without a truly rugged construction or deep sports modes, you'd be better off thinking of it as a hulkier Galaxy S5, than as a truly impervious handset made just for hardbodies. And that's mostly OK. Samsung never claims that the Active is a durable device, and the fact that the company doesn't skimp on the phone's software and hardware fixin's speaks volumes. Samsung hopes that outdoorsy types will gravitate to the heart-rate monitor, physical navigation buttons, and to the convenience key that pulls up a compass, flashlight, and the camera, but really, these benefit anyone. Like the original S5, this Active can withstand short dips in water, shocks, and dusty landscapes. As a phone, the S5 Active's flaws are relatively minor oversights, like a design that's more slippery than grippy, and the missed opportunity to highlight camera modes for action and landscapes. Instead, Samsung keeps it all mainstream. If you're seeking a high-end smartphone with an edgier look that doesn't need a separate protective case, get the Active. Otherwise...

Caramel

...Caramel Apple Recipe with Homemade Caramel For this recipe you need a candy thermometer and real butter. Hey, it's Halloween... don't skimp on the butter. This caramel apple recipe makes enough caramel for about 8 to 10 medium sized apples. My favorites for candy apples are Fuji, as they're the perfect combo of crisp, tart, and sweet... but you can use whatever apple you like best. To make this a cinnamon caramel apple recipe, stir 1/2 to 1 tsp. of ground cinnamon into the caramel while cooking. Ingredients: 1 C. real butter 2 C. dark brown sugar, packed 1 C. light corn syrup 1 (14 oz.) can sweetened condensed milk 2 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract 8-10 medium-sized apples, sticks inserted in tops Instructions: 1. Over medium-high heat, stir together the butter, sugar, corn syrup, and condensed milk in a heavy sauce pan. 2. Bring to a boil. 3. Cook about 30-40 minutes (don't stir often, as you'll risk crystallization), until the caramel darkens and thickens. It should reach the "firm ball" stage of candy-making. This means that, upon dropping the caramel into cold water, a firm ball forms. This ball shouldn't flatten when you remove it from the water, but should still easily change shape when you touch it. With a candy thermometer the temp should read 245-250 degrees F. 4. Remove finished caramel from the heat. 5. Stir in vanilla extract. 6. Dip apples into hot caramel. In order to get as thick a caramel coating as possible, dip each apple at an angle and rotate within...

As a result, JPMorgan was able to pick up the pieces of Bear Stearns when it imploded in March and later absorb collapsed mortgage lender Washington Mutual. That doesn’t mean JPMorgan is immune to the turmoil. “We are not holding ourselves up as paragons of virtue,” says Dimon. “We were not exceptional in every category. But if you don’t do a good job for the customers, you’re never going to do a good job for the shareholders. Using your learning’s from the case, explain how Zara is able to get productivity benefits from IT The firm tripled in size between 1996 and 2000, then skyrocketed from $2.43 billion in 2001 to $13.6 billion in 2007. By August 2008, sales edged ahead of Gap, making Inditex the world’s largest fashion retailer1. While the firm supports eight brands, Zara is unquestionably the firm’s crown jewel and growth engine, accounting for roughly two-thirds of sales2.The blend of technology-enabled strategy that Zara has unleashed seems to break all of the rules in the fashion industry. a) Efficiency in Design teams Rather than create trends by pushing new lines via catwalk fashion shows, Zara prefers to follow with designs where there’s evidence of customer demand. Data on what sells and what customers want to see goes directly to “The Cube” in La Coruña, where teams of some 300 designers crank out an astonishing 30,000 items a year. b) Speed of execution in bringing a new product idea to store & response to change In the fickle world of fashion, even seemingly well-targeted designs could go out of favor in the months it takes to get plans to contract manufacturers, tool up production...
