In the film “Skin Deep,” Nina Jablonski theorized that variation in human skin color is due to the environmental factors of geography and the sun’s ultraviolet radiation, not race. Skin pigmentation is important to human health because it developed as the body’s way of balancing its need for vitamin D and folate. Because human skin color correlates closely with annual levels of UV radiation levels based on geography, the skin needs to have the correct pigmentation in order to endure the UV light from the sun. Skin Deep

...Arlaina Reeves Prof. Vega ENC 1101 30 October 2014 Skin Deep Different skin tones get certain privileges than others. Back in the days “Whites” (Caucasian) didn’t really care for “Blacks” (African-Americans). They bought them over from Africa as slaves treated them poorly and sold them off as if they were nothing. People today in certain parts of the world African-American people are looked down upon and judged because of the color of their skin. Racism is a very powerful word and it has a disturbing meaning behind it. Of course, everyone interrupts this word differently so there are different meanings. According to the dictionary, racism has three different meanings. The first being, a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various humanraces determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others. The second, a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination. And finally, hatred or intolerance of another race or other races. So, all these meaning of the word racism are mostly the same but that was the dictionary’s view on the word not people. One may feel that the word is very an act of harm doing to those of a different nationality or culture. Thus, the word’s definition may different from someone’s personal meaning and the dictionary. Racism was popular in the 1800s and early to mid-1900s. Yes it still exist but not as...

Nonconformity Is Skin Deep

...It was the title of this article that caught my eyes at first place. Along with the content develops, however, I feel like I want to change the “Nonconformity is Skin Deep” to “Conformity is Skin Deep”. But I guess this is exactly why I am into this piece. This article is brief, sharp, and ironic. We know that in the past, people would feel ashamed of talking about wearing tattoos. The way that people tried to avoid getting connected with tattoo in the past hardly makes people believe that today tattoo has developed a prosperous market worldwide. When we think of tattoo, it’s not hard for us to think of the pain when people etched images into their skin. For those of people who want tattoos, they have to experience it and this process does not change over time. Also, the way people wear tattoos slightly varies. From your neck to toes, places of your body that can add images are always there. So generally speaking, nothing about the tattoo itself is distinct. What has changed and made tattoo matters nowadays are the perceptions of people toward wearing tattoos. Some people tattooed because they want to memorize their loved ones, living or dead. Some tattooed because they want to tell the story behind the symbol and they expect people come and ask them question about the arts made on their skin. Some tattooed simply because they want to express themselves and mark themselves as nonconformity. But the thing is, do people really need to mark themselves to remember...

Beauty Is Only Skin Deep

...Beauty is only skin deep Beauty is only skin deep. What does it refer to? It refers to the fact that one can be beautiful on the outside and mean or unpleasant on the inside. Now, let me ask you a question. When you look at yourself in the mirror, what do you see? Do you think you're beautiful? Firstly, it's important to state that it has never been harder for people nowdays to feel good in their skin . Even though we have so many things to help us- new, improved makeup, cosmetic products and even drastic medical procedures, the majority of people still don't feel confident about how they look. And, whose fault is that? Magazines, billboards and other print media push a fantasy world on us filled with perfect, bronze complexions, smooth skin, and unbelievably thin, toned frames. You will never find a blemish, cellulite, stretch mark, or any other imperfection on a model in a magazine. On the one hand, many skeptics have opposed the view that "Beauty is only skin deep" . They believe that beauty is always important because all human beings love being beautiful. Moreover, they think that beauty can ensure for the future happy life. But they forgot one really important thing. Others won't like you just because you're beautiful. To sum up, in dictionary it says: „ Beauty is the combination of all the qualities of a person or thing that delight the senses and please the mind. We should learn something from that. Beauty is more than skin deep when one acquires the beauty of...

Psoriasis: More Than Skin Deep

...Psoriasis: More than skin deep HCS 245 January 10, 2010 Psoriasis is a noncontagious common skin condition that causes rapid skin cell production resulting in red, dry patches if thickened skin. Although, psoriasis is classified as dermatologic disease, it doesn’t start in the skin, and its damage may be more than skin deep. In fact, the very name is borrowed from an ancient Greek word meaning an itchy or scaley condition. Psoriasis is a chronic condition that strikes both male and female from infancy to the elderly. It can range from mild to severe. Environmental factors play a role; psoriasis has been linked to psychological stress, obesity, smoking, alcohol, strep throat, viral infections, lack of sunlight, and certain medications (antimalarial drugs, lithium, beta blockers, etc.) Psoriasis comes in many forms and about 90% of patients have the plaque type, which is sharply demarcated salmon-pink plaque of inflamed skin covered by silvery scales(July, 2010). Other types of psoriasis include: • Guttate psoriasis- The second most common form of psoriasis. Gutta means droplet. Patients have numerous small, red, scaley spots scattered on the arms and legs. The trigger to the disease is usually a streptococcal (bacterial) infection. The eruption of the lesions on the skin usually happens about 2-3 weeks after the person has strep throat. The outbreak can go away and not reoccur. Outbreaks may also go away and come back, particularly if the person is a strep carrier...

Wit With Tanning Case Study

...Achieving a stunning tan skin is no longer the time-consuming and sometimes expensive process it used to be. With tanning pills there is no longer any need to schedule solarium visits or to slot time to go down to the beach. For a long time the best alternative to the two aforementioned options was to use skin tanning lotions aka pour-ons. These lotions feature an active ingredient i.e. dihydroxyacetone (DHA), and which is a colourless sugar that eliminates the dead cells atop the skin's epidermis. This interaction results in the skin becoming tanned and the effect can last for up to a week. However, as a result of the skin shedding its dead cells everyday and the body renewing the epidermis after forty days, the tan effects also die away, leaving behind unsightly patches....

Burn Wounds Research Paper

...Burn Wounds: For a burn wound you would start by having a clean face so the latex can properly stick to your skin. Latex can catch baby hairs so Vaseline and a wig cap can be helpful. You start with a very thin layer of latex on the portion of your body you would like burned. Then when it has dried you take the exacto knife and very carefully cut that small layer of latex and pull it to create small holes. To give a blister look, however don’t go too deep if you feel any pain stop immediately. You would then cover your face in a foundation similar to your own skin color then in another layer of latex, fake blood cannot stick to most foundations because it has an oily base, which is why the next layer is necessary. Once those have dried you...

Electrotherapy

In this report I have researched and written about nine machines and the effects they have on the body. High Frequency. The high frequency machines can be a small table top unit or a large free standing unit, with many of the larger units housing a number of different electrical equipment. Most units have two switches: one on/off and the other to control intensity. Once the unit is switched on it produces an electrical impulse which passes through an electrode that delivers a current to the client. There are several electrodes which fit into the handle that is attached to the machine via a lead. Each electrode is made of glass, normally with a metal end which is pushed into the handle. The electrode has a small amount of either air, neon, or mercury sealed within. Once the machine is switched on the current flows from the unit to the handle and connects to the electrode via the metal end. The air or gas within the electrode becomes ionised and is dispersed into the tissue area. The electrode will glow: Violet-Air Orange-Neon Blue violet-Mercury There are two methods of application...

Chemical Peels

...age and liver spots, fine lines and wrinkles, pigmentation, and sun damaged skin. There are three different types of peels: superficial, the lowest level, medium depth, and deep peeling. Estheticians can only perform superficial peels anything that is more invasive has to e performed by a physician. So in the salons the parentage that can be applied is between 15 and 30 percent. These peels include Alpha Hydroxy Acids, Beta Hydroxy Acids, and 1 to 2 layers of a Jessner’s peel. All of these peels can be performed every two weeks. When performed they may tingle or feel a little hot and will most likely turn the skin pink. Contraindications to these peels include: allergies to aspirin or salicylic acids, pregnant or nursing, current use of topical or internal antibiotics, Accutane use within the last year, open cold sores, wounds, or other infections, cancer, and autoimmune disease. Any of these would make the client an unfit candidate for a superficial peel. The next level of chemical peels is the medium-depth, Trichlooaceticc Acid or TCA; a dermatologist or plastic surgeon should only perform these peels. TCA can go as deep as the dermis so it should be used with care. The percentage that is used is between 35 and 50. TCA can cause scarring even when just a couple of layers are applied. Contraindications are the same as superficial peels but as include clients that smoke because their skin will be asphyxiated. Phenol peels are the most dangerous and can only be performed...
