Slam the Hate was an event held at The Barn at UCR on Saturday November 17, 2012 from 6- 10 pm. The event was advertised as an “evening of spoken work and music by queer and trans performers of color, LGBTQ community resources, food and community building.” The event was sponsored by UCR’s Associated Students Program Board, Resident Hall Association, Diversity Initiatives, LGBT Resource Center, KUCR 33.3 FM, and by “Prism” of La Sierra University. The event did not start until around 7:30pm with performers such as Crystal Cheatham, J Mase III, Emotions, and Regie Cabico. When the event began, Rebecca Kem of La Sierra University took the opportunity to thank UCR for allowing the event to be made possible. Kem is the president of Prism, a gay and lesbian club, that cannot get permission from La Sierra University to grant them official recognition because of Seventh-day Adventist Church teachings on homosexuality. Due to this, LGBT students in this university do not have services they can rely to for help or acceptance. She explained to the audience that there are many students who do not count as the student body because of their sexual orientation and gender identity. Since La Sierra does not permit non-sanctioned clubs to be held on campus, UCR was more than willing to help students who are in search of resources that they can use and improve. Since the Adventist Church supports the values of the SDA Church, they turned down the club because they teach same-gender sexual activity is a sin, but same-gender sexual orientation is not. One of my favorite performers was the singer-songwriter Crystal Cheatman. She explained her love for music and her love for God as well as fate and religion. Since she is lesbian herself, her struggles were real and inevitable for people in her situation. Cheatman began singing at church when she was young about her love for god and her defiance. Even though she still signs about defiance, she also sings about the stigma about being a lesbian while practicing Christianity and being able to love God openly. People who practice certain religions are usually taught that it is a sin to be homosexual. In her heart, she believed that people of all religions should be okay to be who they are anywhere in the world. It is scary to come out about your sexuality when it is considered taboo, so she sings about support for those who are not as privileged as her to have support. Her goal is to bring awareness in hopes to prevent suicidal people who think that is their only choice when the world that surrounds them rejects them. She sang Maroon 5’s “Sunday Morning” beautifully because not many love songs are featured on the radio that are from women to women. This stuck on my mind because it is one of those little issues that are quickly overseen because of the United States stands for its patriarchy. Domaine Javier was also a guest speaker who was featured on MTV’s “True Life: I’m Passing As Someone I’m Not.” Her appearance has helped to spread the word out for transgender community. She was attending California Baptist University after transferring from Riverside City College, but that was short lived when someone recognized her from the MTV episode. School officials claimed that she had committed fraud and identity concealment. Javier had marked “female” as her sex on her university application, but after a background check they discovered Javier was born a male. She did not think that would be an issue because the application asked for “sex” and not “gender.” Currently, there are over 200 schools nation wide that can deny or expel students for being transgender. Although I do not believe this event touched on many issues about racial inequality, besides the fact that the main speakers were non-white, it dealt on sexual orientation and gender identity. La Sierra University is not the only university that is going through this, but many cases are not made public. Transgendered people are seen as an invisible minority because they do not get enough recognition.

...better of him, and that either Epimetheus or his brother would open the box. Pandora was very curious. She wanted to see what was inside the box, but Epimetheus said no. Better not. "You know your father," Epimetheus sighed, referring to Zeus. "He’s a tricky one."One day, when Epimetheus lay sleeping, Pandora stole the key and opened the box.Out flew every kind of disease and sickness, hate and envy, and all the bad things that people had never experienced before. Pandora slammed the lid closed, but it was too late. All the bad things were already out of the box. They flew away, out into the world.Epimetheus woke up at the sound of her sobbing. “I opened the box and all these ugly things flew out,” she cried. “I tried to catch them, but they all got out.” Pandora opened the box to show him how empty it was. But the box was not quite empty. One tiny bug flew quickly out before Pandora could slam the lid shut again. “Hello, Pandora,” said the bug, hovering just out of reach. “My name is Hope.” With a nod of thanks for being set free, Hope flew out into the world, a world that now held Envy, Crime, Hate, and...

Angry

...So I have been pretty silent on here lately because I am not really sure what to say… First of all I’m still cancer free! And still dealing with the big can of worms we call my intestines that were damaged while we kicked cancers ass. The pain is the same, constant, nagging, unrelenting, stabbing, tiring, annoying, at times unable to stand up straight, cough or breathe deep without wanting to scream or slam my hand on a counter and yell about how unfair this is, I am so done with it. My digestion is so, so. On a good day I can eat and actually keep the food in without wanting to just cry. On a bad day, it seems like the minute I get food in my intestines they scream EVACUATE! I tend to drink all my food on days I work so I don’t have to deal with it. . After all of this is done with my gut I am never having a milk shake again in my life! I am so happy and grateful to be cancer free that it seems almost petty to be complaining about pain, about my gut, about being down right angry & pissed & scared all at once. They say there are 5 stages of grief people go through… 1. Denial & isolation 2. Anger 3. Bargaining 4. Depression and 5. Acceptance These 5 stages don’t necessarily go in any order. I know I have totally hit all of these stages over the last two years dealing with cancer and surgery and recovery and now lately I just feel like I am stuck, stuck in the stupid anger stage. Angry I had cancer, angry every time I look at my...

Type of Drivers

...must take part in on a daily basis, but after several years of driving in frustrating and hectic rush hour traffic one can begin to hate even the thought of going to the grocery store. The roads are filled with very different types of drivers; Competent, Overly Cautious, Distracted, and Reckless are just a few of them. How we determine which category we best fall under can be a challenge, because in our minds we think we are good drivers, but in most cases we’re too oblivious to these classifications. First, there are the rare competent drivers who drive safely by not speeding and obey the common driving laws. Competent drivers are always coming to a full stop, looking both ways, using turn signals, and yielding when necessary. This type of driver is the most agreeable of the bunch, putting others at no risk. More of them on the road and the world would be a better place. We tend to think of bad drivers as the ones who charge down the road, wrecking everything in their path, but is it just as bad to be too cautious? Second to the competent, are the overly cautious drivers. They seem to be the ones to cause traffic jams and frustrate other drivers, because they are so indecisive and unpredictable. You know the kind - won't speed up to merge and stops at the end of on-ramps, sits helplessly at a four-way stop because they don't know what to do, slams on the brakes for no apparent reason, and, of course, refusing to exceed the posted speed limit under any circumstance, causing others...

College Admissions Essay: If I Deserve To Be Here

...plays a large part in why we are still so underrepresented. But unlike others, those statistics only push me to do better. To go farther. To aim higher. It is hard to be in a place where you feel like you don’t belong. It is scary. But it’s a sacrifice someone has to make in order to pave the way for others. Someone has to be first. And I’ve realized, I’m okay with that someone being me. “I now call this session to order. We will begin debate on a bill to establish fair legislative districts. Do I have any authorships?” The judge slams his gavel down, opening the floor for speeches, and I rise from my chair. All eyes are glued on my tiny frame. Giving the first speech of the round is nerve-wracking, no matter who you are. “Representative Pitter, you have the floor.” I walk to the front of the room and turn to face my seated competitors. The look in their eyes as they size me up, not knowing what to expect, is one that I’ve come to relish. I used to hate being the underdog, but I’ve learned there's a certain satisfaction to being underestimated yet completely exceeding expectations. I smile knowingly. “This is Representative Pitter, speaking for the first time this session.” I’ve learned a lot from debate. The effects of Gerrymandering, the In’s and Out’s of Water infrastructure, the dire action needed for the Rohingya people. However, the most important thing I’ve learned from Debate is the true meaning of the phrase “It’s never been done”. Indeed, it’s not that something...

If Dead Women Could Talk

...If Dead Women Could Talk Even fifty years after the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights was established, violence against woman and girls is still a global problem (Women and Human Rights). Ireland’s Supreme Court refused a 14-year-old the right to travel to England to get an abortion after being raped be her father’s best friend. Only after she threatened suicide did they relent (Women and Human Rights). There are many ignorant people of both genders that do not understand the importance of feminism and gender equality. Feminism is the advocacy of women's rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men. Recently, in a class we were asked to raise our hand if we considered ourselves a feminist. I was the only one out of about 20 people that raised their hand. This only proves how misinformed the general population is about this issue. Feminists and activists for gender equality are not seen as they truly are. Gender equality is believing that men and women deserve the same respect, and that is something that has been stripped from women everywhere. I believe that women should be able to stand up for their beliefs freely, be equal to men, and that the general population should know what feminism is and how important it is. The Consequence of Beliefs Feminists receive mistreatment every day, all over the world for standing up for the rights of women. In October 2014, Utah State University received a letter stating that if they did not cancel...

How Is Abigail Presented In The Crucible

...Abigail's manipulation comes out in her relationship with John Proctor. She demonstrates her sly perception by saying these words to him: “I have a sense for heat, John, and yours has drawn me to my window, and I have seen you looking up, burning in your loneliness. Do you tell me that you've never looked up at my window?” (Miller 21). In this moment, she gets him to admit his continued love for her even though he is trying to repair his marriage from his previous affair with Abigail. Abigail then attacks Elizabeth in an effort to convince John to come back to her saying, “Oh, how I marvel how such a strong man may let such a sickly wife be-” (Miller 22). Abigail’s compliment to John and slam to Elizabeth were both meant to manipulate him not to give up on her. As Abigail talks to Reverend Hale and Parris, she tries to make them believe that Tituba made her do what she did in the woods. She says, “ Sometimes I wake and find myself standing in the open doorway and not a stitch on my body! I always hear her laughing in my sleep. I hear her singing her Barbados songs and tempting me with-” (Miller 41). She tries to blame it all on Tituba so she does not look bad or get accused. Abigail manipulates everyone to make herself look like the good...

Who Is To Blame In The Crucible

...John cheated on Elizabeth with Abigail, she forgave him very easily. She even told him that it was her fault he cheated. I am forgiving because I believe that everyone makes mistakes. One time when I had just bought a new phone, my friend asked if she could see it. I debated, but then I handed it over so she could hold it. As soon as she had it in her hands, she dropped in on the floor and the screen got a tiny crack. I knew she felt just as awful as I did, so I started to laugh and kept telling her that it was totally fine. Another way I am forgiving is that I do not stay mad at people for a long period of time. When I was little, my sister and I would get in fights about imbecile things. After she would do something to make me mad, I would slam the door in her face and tell her to go away. About 10 minutes later, I would get bored and go over to her room and ask her if she wanted to do something. Being a forgiving person is a good characteristic that Elizabeth and I share...

Of COURSE, he'll love it, he loves your animal stories." Abel looked up at me, a five-inch difference between our respective heights, with stars in his eyes. "Ya think?" I snorted, "Yeah." I dry my hands and stumble out of the bathroom. My limbs jerk with every motion, a rusty robot. I hear the sounds of shuffling coming from the foyer. My feet lead me to investigate. I see George glaring solemnly at the wall, a small, maroon backpack in his left hand. An envelope in his right hand. I stagger to a stop before him, curious yet apprehensive. "Here." The backpack and envelope are shoved at me and I hold on to both items tight and look up at George. His eyes are dark and hard, unforgiving in the fluorescent light. He gestures at the envelope, "There are seventy dollars and a pre-loaded Metro card, enough to get to Node." "How...how could you have all of this ready?" I look desperately at George's face. My crime had happened but an hour ago. His eyes turned away. "I was waiting for you to slip up." I nearly fall with the weight of these words. I knew George never liked me, and while these preparations are incredibly helpful, the knowledge slams down like a sledgehammer. To expect the kid you're supposed to encourage and support to need a way to disappear? That's low. I'm still until the tension in the air...
