Smallpox

Smallpox was caused by either variola major or variola minor which was an infectious disease. Variola vera or variola is a derivative of the latin varius, meaning “spotted”, or varus meaning “pimple”. In 15th century Europe “smallpox” was first used to separate great pox and variola. Exposure to the virus is followed by an incubation period, people may feel fine and do not have any symptoms. This incubation period averages about 12 to 14 days but can range from 7 to 17 days. People aren’t contagious during this period of time.
Malaise, head and body aches, and sometimes vomiting, and fever are the first symptoms of smallpox. When you get this fever it’s usually very high at least in the range of 101 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit. At this time people are normally too sick to do or to carry on their daily routine. This lasts about 2 to 4 days and is called the prodrome phase. Over half of people with smallpox experience chills and vomiting. About 15% become confused.
In the beginning a rash emerges as small red spots in the mouth and on the tongue. The red spots grow into sores which then open up and spread large amounts of the virus into the mouth and throat. This very person becomes most infectious, at this time. Sores in the mouth break down around this time. Then a rash appears on the face making its way to the other body parts. This usually happens within 24 hours. As the rash gets to increase, the fever starts to fall and the person starts to feel better. You get raised bumps by the third day of the rash. These bumps get filled with thick opaque fluid and often have a depression in the center that looks like a bellybutton, this all happens on the 4th day. The fever again will rise high and remain like that until scabs grow over the bumps filled with opaque.
The virus is highly spreadable, as it moves into the mucous membranes right when the rash appears. Your body then sheds the cells, and virus particles are released, coughed, or sneezed into the environment. For about 3 weeks the infected person can be very contagious or until the scabs peel off of the rash. In side of the scabs, viruses that are alive can be present. After the scabs peel off a light-skinned scar will be in replaced, this happens in 2 to 4 weeks.
Smallpox from one person to another person spreads by face to face contact. There’s also another way smallpox can be spread. Smallpox can be passed on to others through direct object such as bedding or clothing. Rarely, smallpox has been spread by virus carried in the air in enclosed places such as buildings, buses, and trains. This disease is known to be only spread by humans and no insect or any animals.
A person with smallpox is sometimes contagious with onset of fever which is known for the prodrome phase. The person becomes most contagious with onset of rash. At this stage the infected person is usually very sick and not able to move around in the community. The infected person is contagious until the last smallpox scab falls off the body. October 26, 1977 the last case of small pox was diagnosed.

Small Pox

...Small Pox and the Indians Throughout our history books we read time and time again about different groups of people who had to endure death and devastation from different occurrences, such as war, genocide or disease. I would like to talk about one of those occurrences, which is only briefly mentioned to us, which is the effect that smallpox had on the Indian communities that occupied the land that would eventually become the United States. To begin, I will briefly explain smallpox, which is an acute contagious disease caused by the variola virus. Its major symptoms are: fever, vomiting, head and back aches, rash and lesions on the skin (known as pox) and a horrible smell, which could last up to a month. The fatality rate of this disease ranges between thirty and fifty percent, sometimes more among the Indian demographic. The virus is spread through human contact and occasionally through inanimate objects such as cloth. The good thing about smallpox is that once infected its survivors are then immune to the disease for life, so the virus constantly need a new human host to survive. The Indians would not come into contact with the small pox virus until the arrival of the European colonists. Since the Indians had not experienced small pox and had no immunity to the disease, so once exposed to it they were very susceptible to it and it often created an epidemic within their communities, which would nearly wipe out whole tribes at times. At this time, the Indians did not...

Small Pox Debate

...Fenn does a phenomenal job broadening the debate over Fort Pitt and placing it in proper context just as she hoped. She brought up all different views and thoughts about what people believed happened on the topic of smallpox. The first view was that the British intentionally infected local Indians with blankets and a handkerchief taken from the smallpox hospital. Fenn elaborates on this point of view, “In an undated memorandum that is apparently a postscript to a letter of July 7, 1763, Amherst proposed the following to Bouquet: "Could it not be contrived to Send the Small Pox among those Disaffected Tribes of Indians? We must, on this occasion, Use Every Stratagem in our power to Reduce them." This example allows the reader to see the first view point. This view point is that the British leader, Amherst, influenced and pressured his civilians to infect the Indians. The second view point is that British had no desire to infect the Indians, but also lacked the ability and knowledge to do so. Fenn proves this next view point when she states, “It is unlikely that the French would have knowingly passed smallpox on to their Indian supporters at this crucial juncture in the Seven Years' War. But the accusation may well reflect a Native American perception that since they had caught the disease while fighting for the...

Small Pox in the Us

...Current Event Article In the article titled “Costly drug for smallpox questioned” published in the Los Angeles Times on November 13, 2011 the antiviral vaccine for smallpox was looked at. This vaccine was developed by Siga Technologies Inc. as a treatment for people who are diagnosed with smallpox too late to use the current vaccine that the government has stockpiled in case of a bioterrorism attack. The drug is controversial as it is not known if it will work in humans due to testing only being allowed in animals. As there are no current smallpox outbreaks to test on, animals are the only test subjects at this time. Also it comes with a large price tag, around $255.00 a dose, this for 1.7 million doses per the contract to be stockpiled. This high price tag and the governments’ apparent favoritism to Siga has caused outrage by some. The disease which causes pustules and a 30% death rate was eradicated worldwide in 1978. The only strains known to exist are in Russian and US freezers. To date there is no credible evidence that any terrorist group or county has the virus and can attack the US with it. However, the government feels that it is important to have not only our current vaccine stockpile, enough to vaccinate the entire US population, but a backup for those not vaccinated or diagnosed in time. The new drug, ST-246, is said to have $115 million in federal support, not including the contract for manufacture and development, which is estimated to be around $433 million. One...

From witness the companies that have issues with creating any type of new information system are small businesses like restaurants ran by family. It tends that these small businesses are having issues with attaining the resources at an affordable price and sometimes they do not knowledge of what exactly the company needs to advance. Providing an example of a small business that is run by family in my neighborhood is a Chinese restaurant name Mai Dragon. Two years ago a Chinese restaurant in my neighborhood closed shop. Before they closed shop it showed on the building and in business that it was not doing well. Even with the appearance on the outside I gave them a chance and gave them my business. In my opinion their food was not the best Chinese cuisine in the neighborhood; as well they did not have any sort of website to check out their menu. The re-opening of the restaurant in the beginning of this year, I admit I was skeptic of the service and business. However upon further debating within myself I decided to give their business another try, what I discovered is that not only did the owners do a complete restructure of business, they as well added a simple information system...

You have received a letter asking you to provide information that would support their retaining your services rather than hiring employees for the same purposes. Assume that this letter may have gone out to other local firms as well. Working as a team, you will do the following two things: (a) After discussing and choosing a small business with your team, you will prepare a letter (in effect, an informal proposal) in response, offering your services to the clinic. (b) Follow up with an oral presentation before the administration of the clinic to discuss and further sell your services to them. On the date scheduled for the final presentation, each student will be responsible for evaluating one team, as assigned by the instructor, on their written and oral presentation. To help you prepare, a copy of the student team evaluation form has been provided. Additionally, students will evaluate the contribution of their fellow team members and themselves in developing the presentation. Corporation vs Small Business

...The Corporations Role in Small Business Success Your Name Here English 122: Composition II Aimee Garten October 14, 2013 The Corporations Role In Small Business Success Devastation. This describes the state I was in when I walked into my favorite coffee shop and was notified by the owners that they would be closing the doors for good at the end of the business day. I had been going to Donut Connection, a small family owned business, for about a year. I had been loyal to Starbucks since my coffee drinking days began, but this place came highly recommended and it was right on my way to work. I was quickly enamored with their amazing customer service, and I have to admit, the coffee was better than Starbucks. As all good things come to an end, the Donut Connection had to close down for financial reasons. This was a shock to most of the regular customers and myself because the establishment was jam-packed every morning. But this poses the question: Are large corporations, such as Starbucks, responsible for the failure of small businesses? Because consumers appreciate great customer service, and small businesses dominate the economy, corporations should be looked at as nothing more than competition as small businesses are responsible for their own success or failure. A major reason why consumers shop small businesses is the family feeling they experience as well as superior customer service. People appreciate going into a business and being greeted by name and also knowing...
