Just like adults the criminal system for juvenile very on the extent of the crime committed. One thing that is a little different is that juveniles don’t go to the jail or prisons like those of adults. Now each state differs on the age that they consider when a juvenile commits a crime. Some see that if a person is over the age of 16 they are tried as an adult yet others still wait until they are 18 or older. Some states also depend not only on age but the crime that was committed. Like if a state sees an individual steal or vandalizes something and are sixteen they may keep them in the juvenile system, yet is one of the age of sixteen commits a murder they may be tried as an adult.
For the most part they system for the juvenile and adult are similar. First thing they look at is what crime was committed and how many time the individual was or ever has been convicted of the crime. Some also look at other crimes that they may have committed weather it is the same or not. One that has been in the juvenile detention center is less likely to get to walk away after being caught for another crime. Just like adult crimes the decided whether the crime is one that is to put the juvenile in detention center until they speak to a judge. This is the same as adults were they would see a judge within twenty-four to forty eight hr. the judge then decided if they are to release them until there next court date or keep them in the center. Juveniles are more likely looking at fines, probation community service. Yet they always have a change to be placed in the center for an amount of time. In my opinion with the way the juveniles act in this day of age. I believe that they are a little too lenient on them. If they don’t learn at a young age they are more than likely to have more issues later on in there life’s as adults. So punishing harder should be one thing that states could

...Reflective Paper Ethical Treatment of Prisoners Johni K. Anglin SOC 120 Cornell Horn January 28, 2013 Ethical Treatment of Prisoners Societies Forgotten One may ask."What represents ethical treatment of prisoners?" What's more, does it make a difference as to what the prisoners crime is as to what kind of treatment would be considered ethical? For example, should a terrorist be treated differently than a thief? Additionally, who is to decide what kind of treatment of prisoners, regardless of crime, is ethical and what is not? What standard determines ethical versus unethical? Who really concerns themselves which such questions? Is ethical treatment of prisoners related to profitability in our country?"It is argued that Plato was right in claiming that justice is more profitable, more rational, and more intrinsically valuable than injustice (Velasquez 1996). Certainly mistreatment of the least among us is injustice. If so then the question may then become, "What is justice?" To be sure, it seems that there may well be more questions regarding the ethics surrounding treatment of prisoners than solid answers. For these reasons, it is necessary that the ethical treatment of prisoners be examined. I submit that we, as a society, are only as good as the treatment that we mete out to the lowest of our population. Do certain sectors of society like having a "prison-class" of criminals so that perhaps their transgressions against society may go unnoticed In order to successfully...

...Week 4 Paper     Communication is a key aspect to the success of a group project or activity. There are two forms of communication that people use; verbal and nonverbal. In verbal communication people rely on spoken and written words to communicate with one another over the phone, through face to face speech, or through fax and email messages. This is useful for people to instantly relay messages between each other when haste is crucial or before they forget. Nonverbal communication is just as, if not more important than its verbal counterpart. A common saying is that “actions speak louder than words”. Though that phrase was meant to be used when someone does something rather than just talking about it but the same phrase can be used in this situation. Sometimes people have a better reaction when using nonverbal communication in a group project rather than just explaining something to someone. People use body language to provide an emotional aspect to their spoken words as well as to provide emphasis to something important. One way people use nonverbal communication is to point at something or remove something that is unimportant. The tone of someone’s voice is also considered a portion of nonverbal communication. You can tell a lot about what someone is saying to you by the tone in their voice and how they use their facial expressions to emote on what they are saying.   Men and women have different views on different things and sometimes this makes it more difficult to discuss...

...| L.E. Goodman Analysis | Sherry Casey | SOC 120 | Milagros Baez | 3/11/2013 | | Some religions believe that we are all born of sin and into sin regardless of what culture, race, ethnic identity, or class. The belief is that we all have a sense of what is morally right and the relativity of it. “There are traits, customs, and beliefs that make us distinctive to certain cultures, races, and classes, which due to the differences we all follow, a set of different moral standards. Each culture tackles moral questions based on their own moral beliefs.” (Winter, 2011) Relativism maintains when it comes to right and wrong there is neither, because what is virtuous within a particular individual, culture or societies morality must be understood and taken into consideration (Mosser, 2010). Lenn Goodman brings up arguments that there are certain things that are simply wrong. Some people would agree, if you follow his thinking, yet there will be a few that would present a logical argument that would contradict his arguments. The areas of moral debates that Goodman chose would bring on a mass debate of arguments when it comes to cultures, races, ethic identities, or classes. Within the American society there are a huge amount of different cultures. The cultures all function together and have different beliefs and values. It is these different beliefs and values that make America and interesting place to live. The beliefs of Lenn Goodman are based on the...

...Ethical Concerns of Consumer Tracking Name SOC 120: Introduction to Ethics & Social Responsibility Instructor September 2014 Ethical Concerns of Consumer Tracking The practice of consumer tracking has become commonplace through various public avenues, but there are certain aspects of this practice that could be construed as an invasion of privacy. There are so many activities that can be monitored in today’s technologically driven society. Retail outlets and other organizations have countless reasons to track their consumer or client base. The ethical concern is determining where to draw the line when collecting data or monitoring activity. Many companies will use the classical ethical theory of utilitarianism as the basis for collecting data from their consumer or client base. Kurt Mosser describes utilitarianism as an action that is chosen because it produces the best possible results for the greatest number of people (Mosser, 2013). At the corporate level, data is often collected to strengthen the operational processes of the business. This practice is often considered harmless by the businesses involved because their intent is not to use the accumulated personal information for any reason other than to improve the business. While previously working at the corporate headquarters for a retail organization, I was able to observe the practice of consumer tracking as it evolved. This particular organization purchased precious...

...Punishment Research Paper Katherine Birchler University of Phoenix (AXIA) It is easy to see that many types of punishments in regards to someone who commits a crime don’t necessarily have long term effects. In other words, the punishment used in American society has not deterred crime. There are four types of punishment used in American society which are: retribution, deterrence, rehabilitation, and societal protection. There have been many research studies that described the results of each one. The first type of punishment which is called retribution can be described as the belief of doing unto them as they have done to others. Many consider this as the old saying of an “eye for an eye,” and example of punishments of these includes death penalties, life sentences, or other forms of capital punishments. Though there are a lot of controversies about this type of punishment, there are still others who still believe this kind of punishment. It is by far the oldest form of punishment to date and still considered popular today. The effects can be damaging nonetheless to everyone involved in this process. The families of the victim(s) and the offender all grieve however judges and the authorities might justify the punishment as a way of making sure one hundred percent that the criminal will never commit their viscous act. Retribution usually happens when the offender is a serial murderer or someone else who has killed many people and is threat...

...Pornography & Its Ethical Issues SOC 120 Introduction to Ethics & Social Responsibility February 3, 2014   Many argue that pornography is degrading, and believed that it denigrates women and in some cases even men. Feminists argue that it’s harmful to society promoting rape, violence, and sex discrimination. Pornography is often seen by others as an erotic art that has been around for thousands of years. Technology today makes access to pornography very easy by video, text, and the internet. Pornography raises many moral questions, but mainly, are pornographic materials morally offensive or not? The ethical issues pertaining to pornography are abundant, considering protecting personal privacy, computer crimes, materialism and cultural expansionism. Anti-pornographic believe that it’s immoral and that pornography should be censor. Pro-pornographic, believe to be education and inspirational, and argue that by taking away the constitutional rights are begging violated. Even though there are many different opinions about pornography, does not seem to be an accurate definition. Some argue that porn is violent, portrays unequal power in sexual relations and showing that many of its acts are judged as immoral. What does pornography mean in the dictionary? Pornography stems from the Greek word porno, meaning prostitutes and the word graphos meaning writing. Pornography is defined to include the definition of actual sexual contact, meaning hard core, and portrayal...

...Military Orders 1 To Obey or Not to Obey: Unethical Military Orders Richard Cuoco SOC 120 : Introduction to Ethics and Social Responsibility Instructor : Stacey Hiles February 27th 2012 Military Orders 2 In a military environment following orders is essentially the top priority. Insubordination is generally defined as a willful or intentional failure to obey a lawful and reasonable request of a supervisor.1 Following orders shows that the organization is well structured and disciplined. Sometimes though an order comes down from above that you may feel is not ethical or it goes against your standard thought of what is right or wrong. Here I plan to discuss my thoughts on this topic as well as supporting my claim that through the use of utilitarianism, a solution to this issue could be reached. In the recent past the image of our military has been tarnished in perspective of the public eye as a result of some officers not following ethical conduct of the force. They believe that their thoughts and ideas about what can come from their orders are the only thing that matters and what you feel shouldn’t matter because you are a subordinate and should follow orders. With that said I believe that there should be an ethical process involved when making certain decisions. I also believe that all subordinates should let their superiors know what they think of certain common situations so there is no need to question someone’s ethics when there isn’t time to do so...

Soc/120 Final Project. Perfect Paper!

...NTC 406 Week 3 Individual Assignment Bandwidth is a Rate at which electronic signals can travel through a medium, such as a wire, cable, or channel or capacity of network to transmit data on network. There are different transmissions medium such as audio video and voice. Bandwidth need is different in the all because these all are different data format. In analog transmission (such as of voice signals over copper telephone lines) bandwidth is measured in cycles per second (or Hertz); for example, a telephone conversation requires about 4,000 Hertz (4 KHz) of bandwidth. In digital transmission (such as of data from one computer to another) bandwidth is measured in bits per second (BPS); for example, modern modems can send and receive data at 56,000 bps (56 Kbps) over ordinary telephone lines. For the same amount of data, digital transmission requires more bandwidth than the analog transmission, and different types of data require very different bandwidths. For example, full motion video normally requires about 10 million bits per second (10 Mbps) bandwidth which is sufficient to carry 1,200 simultaneous telephone conversations. A typical voice signal has a bandwidth of approximately three kilohertz (3 kHz); an analog television (TV) broadcast video signal has a bandwidth of six megahertz (6 MHz) -- some 2,000 times as wide as the voice signal. Three bandwidth techniques involves are as like Traffic Management/QoS, Caching and Compression so these are different bandwidth...

Soc 120 Week 2 Prejudice and Discrimination

...Prejudice and Discrimination Tiffany Gibson Sociology November 25, 2012 Matiko Bivins Prejudice and Discrimination When reflecting on my six-month expedition to South Africa, I recognized various aspects of prejudice and discrimination. Although racial categories in South Africa have been abolished, many native countrymen still view themselves and others according to these categories. Race is the classification system to categorize people based on physical characteristics, but has not scientific significance. “Blacks are the largest racial group in South Africa (approximately 79% [of the total population]) (Shutts, Kinzler, Katz, Tredoux, & Spelke, 2011)” consisting of several ethnic groups, such as Khoi-San, Xhosa, Zulu, Ndebele, Sotho, Venda, and Shangaan. Ethnicity is cultural traits shared by a category of people; religion, language, and national origin are types of ethnic classifications. However, the minority of white South Africans have more freedom and opportunities because of the unspoken racial separation within the government and workforce. Khoi-San is the unified name of two ethnic groups, who share physical characteristics and languages of the Bantu region. They are known to have small, short frames, copper-brown skin, high cheekbones, and slanted eyes differentiating them from their dark African counterparts. They are native to the semi-desert regions in...

Soc 120 Week 2 Discussion 2

...The three theories that make up ethics are ultilitarianism, deontology, and virtue ethics. These all have one thing in common and that is the views hold morality on some level. They do all have different viewpoints though but the entire idea is to handle situations while having standards. What is morally right or wrong? These ethics explain the good nature in doing something. I would say a utilitarian would agree that limiting public smoking is a great idea. It would be for the greater good of the community. People who don’t smoke would be happy about this and smokers would then smoke less and that is healthier for them. A deontologist would say that there is no limit and if someone wants to smoke and it makes them happy then they should do what they want. A perspective of a virtue would give a higher moral standard and just hope that everyone can get along and “treat others as we want to be treated”.  My goal in using ethical theories in real-world issues is to determine if the consequences of a certain act is morally right or wrong.  When using ethical theories, you can determine if an act is morally wrong or right based on facts.  For instance, it is a fact, that more people would smoke less or quit smoking if it was limited in public areas. This would help would health problems such as lung cancer or mouth cancer. Everything is based on opinions and it would be better using ethical perspective to determine if right or...

Skywest Bod Recommdation

...Next, let’s move to response to recommendations. The executive team gives three main problems, which are SkyWest Reliance on United and Delta for its customers and revenue, Atlantic Southeast Airline’s poor customer service, and SkyWest has High Operating Costs as compared to competitors. However, the executive team just focuses on first two of them and gives the recommendations. The first recommendation is try to acquire contracts with low-cost providers, such as Southwest and JetBlue. We are agreeing with this recommendation. Because, if SkyWest only rely on United and Delta, it will increase their financial risk, assume one of them have a financial or managerial problem, the SkyWest will have a hard time, and that not only will affect their total revenue, but their public reputation and the power of competitive in this market. Also, only have United and Delta will limited the resource of income; therefore, find some more copartner is reasonable, but due to the SkyWest’s financial situation, the low-cost providers can be on the list. However, the question is whether Southwest and JetBlue, they are individual company, and they doing well on their business, so why they will come to SkyWest? What benefit that SkyWest can provide to those companies due to their current finical situation or the future years? We need more detail. The second recommendation is SkyWest share customer service strengths with ASA. And we agree with this recommendation. For any customer, when they...

Religion in the Workplace

...Religion in the workplace Religion in the workplace Heather Oarr SOC 120 Professor Dorienne Neptune Heather Oarr SOC 120 Professor Dorienne Neptune Even though some people may think that religion has no place in the workplace, religious exceptions should be allowed in the workplace because in accordance with Relativism it is in our culture to follow the constitutional right of freedom of religion, in accordance with utilitarianism the majority of people have some religious conviction that interferes with work, and in accordance with deontology we have a duty to uphold a persons constitutional right to freedom of religion. As the workplaces is continuing to become a more diverse place, religion is becoming a major workplace issue.  Employees of diverse religious backgrounds may request accommodations to practice their own daily religious activities or to follow their own religious beliefs.  Under the Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, employers must allow reasonable accommodations for religious requests that are based specifically on employees' sincerely held religious beliefs or practices unless is so doing it would impose an particularly undue hardship on the business and its operations.  In addition, employers must make sure that their employees are not harassed or discriminated against on the basis of religion (Levy, 1). Freedom of religion takes many forms in the workplace. For example: Sikhs may feel a religious obligation to wear a turban at work. Male...
