Democracy and Development

...Democracy and Development Democracy and Development By: Sanders (SB) Collins Week 2 First Essay Assignment Professor: Don Anderson Strayer University SOC 300 The Challenge of Third World Development July 12, 2013 By discussing the relationship between democracy and economic development in this assignment we will attempt to compare the ways Howard Handleman, Ronald Inglehart and Christian Welzel all define the prerequisites argued or implied that are necessary for a working democracy. Is the emphasis centered on economics, cultural values, political values, or a combination of all three? Each author has their own perspective on the subject and we begin with a brief synopsis of each to better clarify our discussions. Howard Handleman spent much of his career with the International News Service and U.S. News and World Report as a correspondent and editor. In his text in Chapter 2, Handleman focuses on the political shifts that have taken place in much of the Third World. Governmental authoritarian regimes have fallen due to the call for democracy and freedom in many of the more than 150 countries that together make up the Third World. Probably the most notable example of this type of regime to collapse would be the end of the Cold War. After the Russian fall of power and the resulting loss of both economic and military support from the USSR many of its allies fell from grace and the call for democracy began to become more...

Social Psychology Final Paper

...Beverly McClaskey SOC 300 Week 12—Fall 2014 November 6, 2014 Final Project Self-esteem is defined in our text as “people’s evaluations of their own self-worth—that is, the extent to which they view themselves as good, competent, and decent (Aronson, Wilson and Akert 13). I have observed over the past couple of decades that more emphasis has been placed on the recognition and support of personal self-esteem. In generations past, this concept was not recognized as part of development. When our parents and grandparents were growing up, it was not common practice for adults to foster an inner belief of capability. My feelings on this subject have not changed; I am, however, more informed in regards to the foundation of self-esteem. I have learned that self-esteem is a method in which we deal with our own mortality (Aronson, Wilson and Akert 130) and that while having a high self-esteem can help you to be a more productive person, an increase in narcissism has been observed in students born after 1980 (Aronson, Wilson and Akert 131). I bounce between wanting to help others develop their own self-esteem to feel more confident in their abilities to wanting people to realize that there are just some things that they are not going to be good at regardless of how much they tell themselves that they can do this. A healthy dose of reality is necessary to balance the high self-esteem that can lead to narcissism. Every one of us has encountered a new person and immediately made initial...

Lipoic Acid

...Lipoic acid, or more technically alpha-lipoic acid, is an increasingly recognized dietary supplement that has demonstrated a variety of beneficial effects. Lipoic acid occurs naturally in small amounts in the body where it is involved in a variety of processes but is primarily important in aerobic metabolism and various enzymatic actions. Lipoic acid is known to be involved in the energy-producing processes in cells. Lipoic acid is found in many foods, including liver, kidney, and heart meat and in broccoli, spinach, beets, yeast, yams, carrots, and potatoes. Scientists discovered lipoic acid in the 1950s, but the importance of this compound and its critical role as an antioxidant in the body was not defined until 1988. Lipoic acid is readily converted in the body to another compound called dihydrolipoic acid. Dihydrolipoic acid, or R-Dihydrolipoic acid, is the reduced form of lipoic acid that has more immediate effects than lipoic acid and has even more significant antioxidant effects than lipoic acid. Both of these antioxidants are particularly effective in destroying free radicals known as peroxynitrite radicals. These damaging compounds contain both oxygen and nitrogen and have been implicated in the development of chronic inflammation, nervous system diseases, pulmonary diseases, and arteriosclerosis. Lipoic acid acts as an antioxidant in the body and has been shown to have protective effects against nerve damage in diabetics, among other beneficial effects. Lipoic acid...

Sociology

...Karl Heinrich Marx Week 10 Final Assignment Strayer University SOC 300 Sociology of Developing Countries Professor Muhammad Terry Cheek 6/13/2013 I have decided to write a paper on Karl Marx because I think some of his views were interesting and had some truth to it but only to a certain degree. I am just voicing my opinion on his views and I think when reading about his ideals and philosophies you have to keep in mind that the world was a different place at that time also. I do believe he was a brilliant man and had a huge amount of courage to continue to write what he believed in even though it brought a great deal of hardships into his life. I will briefly discuss his upbringings, his education, philosophies, and some of the literature he wrote. I urge anyone to read his works and learn more about him as a person before passing judgment on him. Karl Heinrich Marx was one of nine children born to Heinrich and Henrietta Marx in Trier, Prussia. His father was a successful lawyer who revered Kant and Voltaire, and was a passionate activist for Prussian reform. Although both parents were Jewish with rabbinical ancestry, Karl’s father converted to Christianity in 1816 at the age of 35. This was likely a professional concession in response to an 1815 law banning Jews from high society. He was baptized a Lutheran, rather than a Catholic, which was the predominant faith in Trier, because he “equated Protestantism with intellectual freedom.” When he was 6, Karl was baptized...

Hedonic Shopping Motivations

...The current issue and full text archive of this journal is available at www.emeraldinsight.com/1355-5855.htm Hedonic shopping motivations, supermarket attributes, and shopper loyalty in transitional markets Evidence from Vietnam Trang T.M. Nguyen Hedonic shopping motivations 227 Received February 2006 Revised July 2006 Accepted August 2006 Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam Tho D. Nguyen and Nigel J. Barrett School of Marketing, University of Technology, Sydney, Australia Abstract Purpose – This study aims to explore the impact of hedonic shopping motivations (HSM) and supermarket attributes (SMA) on shopper loyalty (SLO). Design/methodology/approach – A sample of 608 supermarket shoppers in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam was surveyed to test the model. Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the data. Findings – It was found that SMA and HSM had positive effects on SLO. It was also found that the impact of hedonic motivations on SLO was different between the younger and older, as well as lower and higher income groups of customers. However, no such difference was found between female and male shoppers. Research limitations/implications – A major limitation of this study was the use of a sample drawn from one transitional market. Cross-national samples will be a direction for further research. Also, the study focuses on attitudinal loyalty. Behavioral loyalty should be taken into account in future research. Practical...
