The general argument published by The Week in their article, “Soccer’s Corrupt Soul”, is that FIFA’s governing body is very corrupt, and the corruption will not be going away soon. More specifically, the article argues that FIFA officials have been regularly receiving bribes, and only now are investigators unveiling the scandal. The article states,
“Prosecutors say FIFA officials have engaged in "rampant, systemic" corruption over 24 years, essentially selling off the rights to host World Cups and other tournaments for $150 million in bribes and kickbacks.”(pg. 1) In this passage, the article is suggesting that officials receive bribes in exchange for rights to host prestigious tournaments that bring fame to the host.
