Social, Ethical & Legal Issues regarding Social Media and Pharmacy Education For the longest time the use of the internet has elicited a wide array of scrutiny from all the areas of the society. Articles have been written regarding the use or more often the misuse of the internet especially the social network (Chadwick & Besley, 45). Most of the debate has been centered on the issues that are directly related to the use of social media in number of areas. The institutions of higher learning have also been significantly influenced by the social media such as Facebook, tweeter, YouTube and other technologies that allow for real time communication among people through the internet. An article by Jeff Cain and Joseph Fink looked at certain issues that have arisen in regards to the use of the social media in pharmacy education (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov). The goal of the article was to identify the core ethical issues that are as a result of the use of social media in higher learning and it also offered recommendations for pharmacy lecturers and other educators on how to prepare for and address potential issues that pertain to the use of the social media. This article tries to address the struggles that the pharmacy educators are faced with in regards to their communications and relationship with and among students in the wake of the rampant use of the social media. It tries to clarify some of the legal issues that have been faced with in regards to the same subject matter and the pertinent court cases that relate to social media interaction. The educators are mostly faced with the decision of whether or not they should interact with their students and allow them to be part of their followers in the social media scenery. In this same article the extent of the freedom of speech is also addressed and how it relates to pharmacy education. Here
