Social influences as the process where other individuals influence another individuals every day, thoughts, behavior and even emotions (Gray & Bjorklund, 2014). When social influences change an individual’s willingness towards a behavior or belief, it means the individual has conformed. When individuals conform in order to fit within group norms in order to feel liked or accepted, is referred as normative conformity. Informational influence occurs when individuals conform to others belief or choices because, individuals believe that others have information which the person was not aware of. Individuals believe that the information being given is knowledgeable information to either ensure security or accuracy and acceptance towards a belief. Students of all ages use informational influences when they ask their peers, parents or professors for advice or help on assignments. Students gain knowledge, and information by accepting this new information as valid. Normative influences occur within groups. Acceptance from peers is critical in adolescence. What teenagers wear, what music they listen to, etc., are all influenced by the norms currently established within the society, home, or social click (Gray & Bjorklund, 2014).
Asch’s experiment (1956), was to study independence of an individual and conformity, by using social influences on an individual (minority) placed within a group majority. The experiment was done in a classroom setting with seven to nine individuals told that they were going to take part in an experiment about visual discrimination. All but one (the minority) of the individuals were confederates, individuals who had met with the experimenter and were instructed on how to respond to the questions asked during the experiment. Asch included certain question asking if the minority felt any suspicions. All of the minorities has some sort of disagreement as soon as it occurred, and all noticed that the majority was unanimous. The verbal excuses throughout all the participants (minorities) were similar: a misunderstanding of instructions, an unknown deception (optical illusion) or a personal visual impairment. Statements such as these, represent informational influence because, minorities felt misinformed or lacking information. More interesting were some of the comments from the minorities in the critical trials. These individuals disagreed with their answers with the first couple of line sets out of the twelve but, after a while it seemed as if the participants relinquished those thoughts as the confederates wrongfully chose the line. When asked to explain, participants said there was an attempt to mentally shrink or stretch the line in order for it to match what the majority choose but they decided to give the benefit of the doubt to the majority. Statements such as this are normative influences because the minorities felt the need to agree with the majority. ...Social influence occurs when one's emotions, opinions, or behaviors are affected by others.[1] Social influence takes many forms and can be seen in conformity, socialization, peer pressure, obedience, leadership, persuasion, sales, and marketing. In 1958, Harvard psychologist, Herbert Kelman identified three broad varieties of social influence.[2] 1. Compliance is when people appear to agree with others, but actually keep their dissenting opinions private. 2.
