Dangers of Social Media Social media has become a commonplace in the homes across America. Like all things there are those out there who looks to use things for bad purposes. This puts us in a predicament where our children have access to the entire world before they’re truly ready to experience it. This means we need to help teach our children what is and isn’t safe on the internet and for us as parents to also recognize what is harmful and to attempt to protect our children. The dangers they face are often cyber-stalking, cyber-bullying, and a “no privacy” zone. Being able to recognize these things and teach our children how to handle them will make for a much safer social media experience and an all-around more fun one. A threat to children that can lead to many harmful outcomes is cyber-stalking. This also includes harassment over the internet. Many times cyber-stalking is performed by a jealous ex-boyfriend/girlfriend who becomes obsessive and unable to move on from the relationship. Sometimes this can be an adult posing as a child in an attempt to lure them to their home. This is a particularly dangerous form of cyber-stalking that has very potentially dangers outcomes. Many times these people go years without being caught because they cause the victim to be in fear of telling what happened and they often times return to the abuse. Another form of cyber-stalking is where someone “for fun” repeatedly sends malicious content to the victim attempting to scare them or hurt them. These different types of cyber-stalking are important for a parent to attempt to recognize because they can cause the victim to become scared to use their social media accounts. Cyber-bullying is another danger that lurks around social media sites that our children often become a victim of or even take part in. This has seen many growing campaigns around the news and internet to put a stop to because of it having an even larger effect than normal bullying because it can be seen and witness by much larger audiences than just a classroom. Cyber-bullying can take more forms than one. “Cyber-bullying is becoming increasingly common: 38% of young people have been affected by cyber-bullying.”(NSPCC.org) The reason it is important to prevent cyber-bullying is because it can lead to our children being depressed, feelings of sadness and loneliness, loss of interest in hobbies, health problems. The cyber-bullying usually involves public threats to harm someone, to humiliate them, to tease or make fun, or to criticize them for the way the act or live. It is more harmful on social media, because it is “public,” it isn’t just heard by a few people standing nearby. It can and is usually seen by the entire internet that knows that person and friends of those friends etc. No longer are we confined by our physical location, because social media accounts can be read from anyone anywhere in the world, and this feeling can cause children who are victims to feel like the whole world hates them and is laughing at them. The final danger is the lack of privacy. These social media sites are a billboard for the world about an individual. When someone posts a picture or a “status” this can be accessed by anyone who has access to the site they post it to and it is kept around permanently, able to be accessed for years down the road which presents some issues. Today companies looking to hire people will often create Facebook accounts for the sake of phishing for information that shows the individual looking to be hired isn’t a desirable candidate. This is why helping our children understand privacy settings are important. Even with strict privacy settings though it is also important to help them to know what you should and shouldn’t be posting to begin with. Many teens and children now like to post pictures of themselves partying and partaking in less and legal activities onto their social media pages to look cool and feel popular. This has already been exploited in some cities around the world for making arrests and suspending children from schools. Not to mention when these kids grow up and look for jobs those pictures are still around and can be viewed making them less likely to succeed and be hired. Even colleges looking to see who is going to be accepted may look to social media accounts to see if this person is the type of person they want representing their establishment. Having your children’s passwords makes it easy to monitor the posts and delete them if you feel they are harmful or unwise. In closing, we as parents have a rough job and road ahead of us with social media. The more our society moves towards a digital age the more we have to be savvy to the dangers and preventions of these dangers. We need to monitor our children’s activities with 3rd party apps that allow us to see what they’ve been doing and posting so we can agree whether it is appropriate. Talking to our children about these dangers is also important because we can’t always be around to watch them and monitor them because they may feel embarrassed sometimes about what is going on. These dangers will most likely never go away and with the increasingly popularity of social media more and more dangers will most likely become visible. So as parents continuing to learn and adapt is important to protecting our kids because they may feel like they know everything but usually they are more naïve than they know. So take some more time out of your day, and ask your child what they are doing and if everything is ok.

...Terneisha Sanders-Sparks English 101-208 Mrs. Michelle Elise 18 April 2016 Mo’Nique “I could have been your cellmate” I chose to watch my favorite comedian Mo’Nique she has inspired me from young. As a child I wasn’t able to watch her shows because of all the cursing and adult content however that didn’t stop me from seeking to watch it while my parents were away or out of the house. My favorite standup performance by Mo’Nique is “I could have been your cellmate.” She walks around the stage. as a big woman you’re not expecting her to move and do some of the things that she does but she does it. She changes he voice from times to time to give a setting of someone else talking and her facial expressions are so hilarious. She’s my favorite comedian because she stands up for all of the big girls. Mo’Nique says many times throughout that’s she could have easily been their cellmate, and I think it’s something most of us can say we’ve experienced if we get angry enough. She picks one of the toughest womens prisons in the nation, and she sets out with two goals. At first you think the goal is to make them laugh, and us when we view it. in fact, most of us certainly bought the thing not because of the prison factor, but because Mo’Nique cracks us up. But by the end, it’s become so much more. A great deal of there women killed out of anger, betrayal or heartbreak. Many more because they were abused...

Why Social Media Has a Negative Impact on Our Society

...Social Medias Negative impact in our society * Social media plays a major part in the way today’s youth are growing up. Although it may have its benefits, it causes a huge negative impact in our society. Social media has drastically changed since it was introduced in 1979 when Usenet systems were first conceived by Tom Truscott and Jim Ellis, and even since Mark Zuckerberg created “Facebook” in 2004. Social media sites such as Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr and Omegle expose today’s adolescence to things they shouldn’t be seeing, and it is as easy as logging in. The following paragraphs will talk about the three main negative effects that social media plays on youth today. These are; one, continuously putting users of Social Media, (and even the internet), in danger, two, damaging face to face socializing skills, and three, exposing our youth to explicit materials. * * Firstly, Social media poses many threats in today’s society. It is accessible from any Computer, Phone, Tablet or IPod with an internet connection. This means that it is easier for children as young as 8 or 9 to connect to a social media site. This in turn exposes them to nudity, swearing and the worst of all; pedophiles and rapists. Rheana Murray of New York Daily News stated that a whopping one in ten profiles online are fake (May 2013). This means that at least 10% or more of a child’s friends on Facebook could be phony. The Carly Ryan incident in 2006 proves that the internet is a very dangerous platform...

Technology is everything to them because they communicate, live and socialize through and with it. It can provide a great opening for children to develop cognitive, social and language skills, but because they are so captivated by the vast products and many programs offered they are missing this opportunity. Social media has also become a very lucrative playing ground for predators, either sexual or bullies to prey on vulnerable and please seeking boys and girls. The power of technology has created a new monster called cyberbully who has the ability to reach out and manifest harm and danger to their targets very easily. Parents can commit to enforcing technology education and monitoring to help their children make a successful tool to access for their advancement and also take the correct defensive measures to protect them from the many dangers. Advertising Campaign

...Assignment 1 Advertising Campaign Mrk312 Consumers are more knowledgeable than ever before. The internet and the adaptation of social media through mobile devices have allowed the flow of information to travel faster than ever before. The worries of one consumer can quickly become the doubts of thousands if not millions within a short span of time. In terms of cancer and general human health, plastic has become an important issue. Plastic is a concern for both the environment and for the health conscious. Plastic is a synthetic material created by combining materials derived from sources such as petroleum, natural gas or coal. These polymers then must be combined with additives to give the finished product properties such as flexibility or toughness (Life Without Plastic and Mama Mundo Inc., 2013). The shelves of sporting goods stores and general retailers are lined with bottles that market BPA free, but that isn’t enough for some consumers. BPA free plastics still contain chemicals that can interfere with normal human functions. Many of the chemicals in the plastics are not know because they are considered proprietary information by the manufactures (Terry, 2011). With so many unanswered questions about the safety of plastic a market niche has developed consisting of consumers looking for alternatives to plastic water bottles. One material that has promise is stainless steel. Stainless steel water bottles do not require linings made from plastics such...

Social Media

...Effect of Social Media on Students Social media has evolved tremendously over the years. It has become nearly a necessity to people around the world. Why take away the social media if it helps us out so much and has made things more accessible? The truth is that social media has become almost as addictive as a drug and a use for chatting and doing things that are not important, when instead people could be out doing important things and building relationships. Social media distorts our views on society and the real world, affecting the way that people communicate and has made us more dependent on a screen than face-to-face. Social media is destroying the social skills of high school and college students for the following reasons including: it causes danger, social media includes cyber bullying, and it can cause personality and brain disorders. The first reason that social media has a bad effect on the social skills of young adults is that it can cause personality and brain disorders. A person on the internet can be everything that they think a person wants them to be to be the “cool” kid. This is a bad habit to develop because students might tend to show a personality that is not them. What will happen when they go out into the real world and communicate? It is plain and clear that they will feel tense and get nervous since being behind a computer screen does not require an individual to face that person and require an automatic reply. On the contrary, when facing a person...

Adverse Effects of Social Media on Youth

...Effects of Social Media on the Youth We live in a quickly evolving world, in which people are more connected than ever before. Social media has become one of the defining themes of our generation, reaching all parts of the globe and influencing many aspects of life. It has provided a platform for individuals, businesses, and news outlets alike. Whether the rise of social media has brought about more harm than good, particularly amongst the youth, has become a hot topic of debate and discussion. Young people are some of the most active social media users, and likely the most vulnerable. Research has indicated that poor academic performance, sexual exploitation, and increased anxiety are often results of overexposure to social media. A study by the Kaiser family foundation found that today’s teens are spending more than seven and a half hours a day consuming some form of media (Ahuja 2013). Although we may not be surprised by hearing about heavy media exposure, over seven hours would amount to nearly half of our waking time. Social media alone accounts for over 3 of those hours, according to the Ipsos Open Thinking Exchange (Marketing Charts 2013). These numbers, which are consistent with many similar studies, mean that the current younger generation is the most electronically connected ever. These new trends require that we understand the benefits, as well as the drawbacks which may occur. Up until about a decade ago, time currently spent on social media may have been...

Many people become addicted to social media that they simply can’t stay off of it.
