SOCIAL PROBLEMS IN SOCIETY
Social problems, commonly dubbed as social issues; affects each and every type of community; whether rich or poor, great or small, virtually every contrasting idea or situation. This element in concern refers to “a kind of belief that a certain social situation/ condition negatively affect the society” (Mooney, Knox & Schacht, 2208, p. 2). Social problems refer to issues that negatively affect a certain group of people living in a certain society. Some of the problems are predominant in a majority of society, while others differ from one society to the other. The common social problems include: Poverty, gender discrimination and social tension. Other issues emerge within a society. These issues depend on the belief that people have in the subject in topic, for instance religion and abortion. Everybody has his or her opinion towards either religion or abortion. One may view abortion as a crime while another views it as a way to solve unwanted pregnancy, this end up causing society conflict, only if a common constitution is not available.
Women and men are equally important for the growth and development of individual and social lives. Unfortunately this equality and prominence tells an incomplete fact. In many societies, women have been subjected to discrimination in learning, dowry deaths and exploitations of various kinds which are very common. This issue is believed to have existed since the ancient times. The incidence of early marriage, heavy domestic duties began long time ago. The girl child I usually burdened with all type of responsibility which are beyond her thinking capacity. This exploitation makes the girl develop slowly and that is why when the girl becomes an adult she becomes physically weak and mentally constrained. Many communities have tried to eliminate this major problem. In the introduction of the government and democracy, women are rarely ignored. This limitation has always been looked upon by not only the government but also non governmental organization.
Prostitution has always been regarded as a symbol of sin and it is with this perception that anyone who indulges themselves in prostitution is regarded as a kind of “stabilizer or morality in the society” (Johan, 2004, p. 1). Johan argues that prostitution in various societies is well thought-out as an immoral activity with the argument being that it is immoral for one to sell their own bodies. With the modern civilization that the world has gone through, many may have come to integrating prostitution into significance by giving it an important bearing in society with some societies going to an extent of legalizing the act. The results of prostitution have therefore being identified as an “issue requiring global solutions in relation to its legislation and regulation” but it remains as one of the drawback that various governments and societies have to struggle with (Jeffreys, 2004, p. 70).
The rise in cost of living which has been caused by skyrocketing of commodities prices has contributed to the non stop of poverty. Levels of poverty may differ depending on the type of community in question. In some society poverty is so intense that certain people cannot afford the basic needs; food, shelter and clothing. The rise in costs of living is sinking more people in this unwanted situation and as a result, some people have no choice but to live in deplorable condition such as slums. On the other hand, those who live slightly below average are becoming susceptible of living on the poverty side due to the escalation of the cost of living. This makes them to live in fears. The most annoying fact about poverty is that the poor are likely to suffer from health issues, famine and crime. The issue of poverty is very serious and governments must try to address this situation if the nation is to be successful.
Nature remains to be an important aspect in the life of a human. Nature needs to be preserved in order to ensure survival to all. During the industrial evolution, various governments have done several practices that have undermined nature. There have been adverse environmental pollution when constructing industries and also when running the industries. Global warming, which has really threatened the existence of man and destroyed the environment came up due to the same industrial evolution. The introduction of pesticides has also contributed to environmental pollution. The funny thing about all this factors that lead to environmental pollution is that they all have a common aim of helping human beings in one way or another, for instance pesticides help man to produce food quite easily. Great scientists have always had concern about this issues that have positive and negative impact. Philosophers and scientist of the late 20th century claimed that the earth will witness a “population time bomb”. Rachael Carol was one of the vocal scientists who paid much attention to the issue of an environmental crisis by carefully detailing the impact that pesticides would have on the environment.
Social problems have always remained as the major drawbacks in human life. Many social problems are believed to be permanent, while others are known to be temporary since their cause is vividly known and effort is done to end it up. Each and every issue carries its weight depending on the level of intensity it has. Some issues, such as poverty are left for the government and non-governmental organization to take care of them. According to the study done by different philosophers, poverty, prostitution and gender discrimination depends on the choice of the people in question and if no consideration and attention is taken, the problems will remain to stay. The government needs to address the entire problem and carefully outline the ways to solve them. Several governments have settled various social problems using the constitution. This has helped to solve problems such as gender discrimination, abortion and prostitution. It is the hope of the lamenting citizens of a particular country that their government will try very hard to address the emerging issues.
