Social Value

...MEASURING SOCIAL VALUE What do we mean by measuring social value? Over the last twenty years there has been increasing importance attached to measuring the social value and social impact that various organisations create. The demand for measuring this value comes from all sides: funders who want to direct their money to the most effective projects, policy makers and government officials have to account for their spending decisions, and social organisations need to demonstrate their impact to funders, partners and beneficiaries1. This has led to a growing interest in terms such as „value for money‟, „value added‟ and „outcomes‟ as ways to measure a organisations performance. In many ways the distinction between „output‟ and „outcomes‟ encapsulates what is meant by measuring social value. Outputs: These are the activities done by an organisation, usually listed in an action plan or set of objectives. For example providing homeless people with food and shelter or organising a conference to discuss long term care services for the elderly. Outcomes: These are the long term observed effects of the outputs and are often the „real‟ changes that organisations are trying to make. For example homeless people no longer living on the street and now in employment is an outcome. Likewise a new policy implemented by a government or a new project that improves the quality of long term care for elderly people is an outcome. Unfortunately there is no single authoritative definition of „social value‟ but...

Social and Ethical Values

...Social and Ethics Values In this word document I will be talking about social and ethical values, how they have an impact at the workplace and how they relate to Ikea’s aims and objectives. There are various different types of factors that we need to consider for social and ethical values such as: 1) Production/products 2) Suppliers 3) Customers 4) Workers 5) Environment 6) Local communities All of these factors have an impact on the workplace. Products/ Production: This is a print screen from the Ikea website and this shows that Ikea is very caring about the environment and they try to make sure that even at low prices that the quality of the product is still very good and they ensure they’re customers that products are safe, have good quality and are still designed to be efficient even if they are at low prices. This on they’re website ensures the customers because it is against the law to sell goods or services with the wrong description of the product and the customers will get they’re money back if the product isn’t what the description told them it would be. In my personal opinion I would trust Ikea’s ensurence of they’re products and the way they are made because my personal experience with Ikea is good every product my parents or my family has bought from Ikea lives up to it’s expectation and this proves to they’re customers that even with low prices their products have good quality, the materials used efficiently and that they are caring...

Examining Social Work Values and My Personal Values and Development

...EXAMINING SOCIAL WORK VALUES AND MY PERSONAL VALUES AND DEVELOPMENT In my essay I will be looking at what social work and values are. Due to the essay 1500 words constraint I look at the arguments for and against 1 of (Biestek 1961) 7 traditional values and then look at 1 of the new values before looking at a radical social work value. Secondly, I will re-evaluate my personal values and experiences to see how they relate to past and current social work values. Thirdly, I will identify the origin and development of my personal values, and look at the main influences and contributing factors. I will then look at the key areas of my personal values and attitudes that need further development as I progress and acquire new skills and knowledge in my course. I will conclude by highlighting and stressing the importance of values and self-awareness in working towards 'knowing and owning my fears, aspirations and values' (Antony, 1996). Social work is a human profession that promotes social changes, problem solving in human relationships and the empowerment and liberation of people to enhance well-being. Utilising theories of human behaviour and social systems, social work intervenes at the points where people interact with their environments. Principles of human rights and social justice are fundamental to social work (BASW 2001) and values in social work are the principles, beliefs, missions or philosophies of an individual, society or an institution that have been elaborated to...

Rule for Creating Value in Social Enviroments

Social Values

...Social Values Introduction Every society generally views certain activities, conduct and behaviour of its members to be undesirable or harmful to others. Similarly, desirable acts and conduct of people are recognized and appreciated in society. Social values refer to the general recognition in society about which acts are good and desirable on the part of people and which acts are not. In relation to business, social values of business may indicate: a. The characteristics of good business; b. Objectives which are desirable for business to follow; and c. The manner in which business activities should be conducted in the interest of society. For example, we consider it bad, if any business indulges itself in selling adulterated goods or charging higher price or polluting the environment. Thus, social values of the business form the base for social responsibilities. Business can also be guided by certain moral principles say, running the business without adopting unfair practices, being honest and truthful about quality of goods, charging fair prices, abiding to laws, paying taxes, duties and fees to the government honestly. The basic question underlying business ethics is whether business should aim at earning profit by any means, obviously not. Thus, businessmen should charge only fair price for the goods and services supplied, never sell adulterated products as pure. Indeed business ethics suggest certain principles to conduct business so as to be morally...

Technology’s Effect on Social Values and Communication Skills

...Technology’s Effect on Social Values and Communication Skills Introduction The three main stakeholders in this issue are the youth, middle generation (my age), and the middle-aged people that are involved in social networking and texting. I feel that the issue can be narrowed down to a past, present, and future where the middle-age is the past, my generation is the present, and the youth is the future. Each of these age groups have a different stake in the issue, but are all connected together within our society through the extended use of technology. As our society evolves, so does our technology. These technologies are made to make our lives easier and more enjoyable, but are they really just making us socially inept? While the advance in technology has been proven to be a benefit in communication, medicines, law, and education, maybe it is a curse within itself. Social media and texting offer ways for people to communicate globally, practically simultaneously, but our society is becoming completely dependent on these technologies, struggling to communicate outside of them, and it is ruining the social capabilities of the youth. Younger Generations The youth may have the most to gain or lose with the advance in technology. Their lives are beginning much different than those of their parents or older siblings. Kids are getting cell phones, social media websites such as Facebook, and video game consoles with internet capability at a much younger age. When used...

Methodology - "“Just Give Me a Number!” Practical Values for the Social Discount Rate"

...compensation when forgoing present for future consumption * SDR = rate of time preference * If the future increase in net benefits > present costs (via consumption rate of interest, CRI) = project passes a potential compensation test * Possible for the winners to compensate the losers * Still have sufficient gains to allow for pareto efficiency * Ex. Net return available to individual savers is 2% per year Project cost (to taxpayers) = $1M this year Net benefit = $3.2M in 50 years * forgoing current consumption of $1M and lending at 2%, return = $2.72M in 50 yrs * therefore, the $3.2M benefit will be preferred * If we ignore intragenerational redistributions, we can suggest that this project would improve social welfare * If individuals seek to maximize their own well-being (economic theory), then marginal rate of time preference = rate at which they can trade present for future consumption (or vice versa) * From a societal perspective, resources that go into investment are worth more than those that are currently consumed * Ex. $1M is saved and invested today, after-tax marginal return to savings is 2%, but the before-tax marginal return to...

Social Values In Indian Society

...As Devlin pointed out, a law should be based considering the social values which make up the moral fabric of a society. The moral purpose of the criminal law is not limited to laws aimed at protecting individuals from other individuals’ conduct. ...DEVELOPMENT OF SOCIAL VALUES AND CULTURAL PRACTICES Certain needs such as to make a living, the need for social organization, knowledge as well as learning, normative and metaphysical expression are common to all the people. As a result, the culture of a society not only acts as an instrument of cooperate development, but also as a basis of social values and cultural practice development. Do You Agree with the View That the British Media Conveyed Fundamentally Traditional Values, and in Doing so Reinforced Social Conservatism During the Period 1945-1959?

...Do you agree with the view that the British media conveyed fundamentally traditional values, and in doing so reinforced social conservatism during the period 1945-1959? Source 1 states that British media continued to convey traditional values between 1945 and 1959. The country had just come out of a war where traditional values were welcomed with open arms, so implementing the radical change of adjusting the media to the social quota, was not as popular or as well-executed as say, the US. Paul Swann wrote in 1987 that Hollywood had an egalitarian element that British films lacked. Hollywood was seen as revolving around the individual and offered hope to people in a collectivist culture. However, there were some changes, as some populist historians argue that the British had made some adjustments to popular demand in the early post war period, however Robert Chapman in 1992 complained that in order to maintain the same quality of radio, gave more money to programmes with a higher social class of listener, and a lower expenditure to those with a lower class listener. This however did not reflect on the statistics for each programme, as the working class were more likely to listen to the radio than the upper class. Overall, Source 1 says that British media reinforced social conservatism during the period stated above. Source 2 states that although some films were being produced in order to educate the British public to other cultures and living conditions to those which the white...
