We believe that this bill needs to be passed to either Control the amount of soda being purchased or to put a heavy tax that will make it so people won't want to purchase it. This bill will if passed decrease the amount of sugar consumed nationwide. This bill’s purpose is to decrease the amount of sugar taken into the body and to decrease the obesity rate. Some people would wonder how would you control the amount of soda? Well we would treat it like cigarettes because soda is nearly as deadly. Stores who sell these drinks will be required to lock the sodas behind a counter. For those who wish to purchase these drinks the would have to have a photo I.D. At the university of utah a radio broadcast of answering this exact conflict. Dr. Juan Gallegos said, “ So that interplay has to do with changes in your blood sugar, the things that you eat and trying to control the blood sugar back to normal levels, and it also has to do with making cholesterol, making triglycerides which are fat molecules that store energy.” The sugar has to be stored some where which is in the liver inside of fat cells but the body also makes its own sugar which ends up building up a lot. The sugar has to go somewhere so it ends up going into areas that it should not. Too much sugar consumption can lead to obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. These diseases cause 38 million worldwide deaths yearly. Medical bills per person would end up costing close to 100 thousand dollars. ...BANGALIT, VANESSA F. 03-15-16 ENGLISH4 / HCO TTH/ 9:30-11:00 INFORMATIVE SPEECH The Truth About Caffeine How many of you here consider yourself caffeine addicts? How much coffee do you drink in a day? One cup? Two cups? More? How about caffeinated sodas? Caffeine is pervasive in our society these days and every few months we hear about how a study has shown that it is bad for us or good for us. What are we to believe? Today, I'd like to give you some of the facts about caffeine and its effects on your body. I may not cause you to change your coffee consumption, but at least you'll be better informed about what you are putting into your body. I'm going to talk about the beneficial effects of caffeine, the negative effects and discuss what are considered to be 'safe' levels of caffeine consumption. Let's start with the good news. Caffeine, which comes from the leaves, seeds and fruits of about 63 different plants, is well known as a stimulant. That's why people drink it, right? Caffeine does help you wake up and feel more alert and it has been shown to increase attention spans. This is a beneficial effect for people who are driving long distances and for people who are doing tedious work. Calling this a health benefit may be stretching it, though staying awake while you are driving a car definitely contributes to your well-being! Caffeine also contains antioxidants, which have been shown to have cancer prevention qualities. The negative...

Persuasive

...Persuasive Speech Ideas These penguins are persuading their friends to take a dip in the cool water... but you can persuade our class on any of the following ideas or come up with one of your own. Remember these are broad topics so make sure you narrow your area and choose your side so that you can properly defend your position. Also I NEVER censor speech topics HOWEVER keep in mind I want the ideas fresh, some topics are very OVER DONE - for example: "smoking is bad for you" - no kidding I think we would all agree with that. "everyone should go to college" - DUH you are preaching to the choir. "std's are bad you should protect yourself" - well there is a new idea. "drinking and driving could kill you or someone you love" - again no one would argue with that logic. So if you are going to pick a topic make sure you approach it in a fresh and exciting way - for example: "Barbie is a good role model" "Smoking Cigarettes are bad for you, so smoke cigars!" 1. same sex marriage 2. adoption 3. heaven and hell (careful to not preach to your audience) 4. abortion (overdone) 5. TV violence 6. gun control (overdone) 7. TV ratings 8. internet 9. profiling 10. Vietnam 11. immigrant laws 12. exercise 13. Ford vehicles 14. cloning 15. breast feeding 16. bilingual education 17. voting 18. red light cameras 19. salary caps for...

Obesity in Usa

Americans are more addictive to eat out instead of preparing healthy food at home and they continue eating unhealthy food although it may contribute diabetes, cancer and heart diseases. How come the obesity epidemic grown so fast and getting out of control? How come the parents feeding their children with processed foods with higher sugar, fat and calories - Is it the children who decide what to eat? Children are acting on their instincts and if they see an advertising on the TV for McDonalds with the Ronald McDonald clown and the happy meal with free toy, they want to go to McDonalds because most children under age 6 cannot distinguish between programming and advertising and children under age 8 do not understand the persuasive intent of advertising. Research has found strong associations between advertising for non-nutritious foods and rates of childhood obesity. It might be difficult for parents to keep their...

The Internet has become a huge medium for advertisers, targeting audiences more precisely than any medium before it. Yet, none of the venerable ad agencies at that time could have guessed that an Internet start-up—Google— would become bigger than the leading multinational advertising holding companies like Omnicom, WPP, Interpublic, and Publicis. Nearly 99 percent of Google’s $16.6 billion revenue in 2007 came from advertising. THE BUSINESS OF MASS MEDIA B 343 ‘ ADVERTISING However, Google is different from the Madison Avenue agencies. It doesn’t design witty, slick ad campaigns. Instead, it facilitates the dull but effective text-based sponsored links that appear in Google searches or on affiliated sites. “We are in the really boring part of the business…the boring big business,” Google’s CEO Eric Schmidt says.2 What Google’s ads lack in creativity, they make up in precision. Consumer Behavior

...each channel, digital interactive technologies have simultaneously opened new routes to narrow cast to children, thereby creating a growing media space just for children and children’s products. Calvert explains that paid advertising to children primarily involves television spots that feature toys and food products, most of which are high in fat and sugar and low in nutritional value. Newer marketing approaches have led to online advertising and to so-called stealth marketing techniques, such as embedding products in the program content in films, online, and in video games. All these marketing strategies, says Calvert, make children younger than eight especially vulnerable because they lack the cognitive skills to understand the persuasive intent of television and online advertisements. The new stealth techniques can also undermine the consumer defenses even of older children and adolescents. Calvert explains that government regulations implemented by the Federal Communications Commission and the Federal Trade Commission provide some protection for children from advertising and marketing practices. Regulators exert more control over content on scarce television...

Kavalier & Clay

...Sammy’s Journey As a “Professional Sidekick” ENG 99B: Senior Honors Essay Aaron Mitchell Finegold Professor Caron Irr Spring 2009 Chapter 1: Introduction, What Is a Sidekick? Something about The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay’s syntax sounds like a comic book itself, not unlike the two characters of Detective Comics who are always billed as Batman & Robin. “Robin & Batman” makes no sense, since Batman (Bruce Wayne) is the protagonist of the story and Robin (Dick Grayson) is his ward. The ordering of names is indicative of both their working style as superheroes as well as their living arrangement, which caused a great deal of controversy both in the context of the novel and some of the historical events it references. For Sammy Clay, the sidekick role apparent in the ordering of his and Josef’s names provides him a creative and continual outlet for his sexual desires, until the final crisis of the novel in which his learning of this very trend allows him to break free of his role and live his life in fulfillment and contentment. The connection between Kavalier & Clay and Batman becomes apparent not only through linguistic observation, but also through several references Chabon makes in the novel comparing one or both characters. Arguably, the interrogation Sammy faces at the trial about Wayne and Grayson’s relationship is the most explicit in that they both live together and they work as a team to achieve a common...
