The subtle differences between Sam Smith’s original song “Writing’s on the Wall” and Sofia Karlberg’s cover of “Writing on the Wall” show that a YouTube artist can cover a famous artist’s song and still be as good as the original, while adding their own flare to the song. I honestly have to admit that I favor Sofia Karlberg’s cover version of the song over Sam Smith’s original version. Both of the artists deliver wonderful versions of the song, but there are a few slight differences between both of their versions of the song that made me enjoy Sofia’s cover just a little bit more.

For example, in Sam Smith’s version of “Writing on the Wall”, he has a full orchestra playing in the background of the song. The orchestra does a fantastic …show more content…
I liked that the music in her cover wasn’t as in your face as Sam Smith’s original version is. It truly is just background music that doesn’t overshadow her singing, but complimented it nicely while still setting the mood for the song.

Another example is that, Sam Smith’s vocal range varies between singing higher vocals and normal vocals throughout the song. At times I felt like I would have enjoyed his song more if he didn’t sing higher in the chorus, because I liked the sad almost haunting emotion that his normal vocal brought to the song. I also felt that when he was singing his higher vocals that they kind of disrupted the song’s flow and made me want to skip over those parts.

Sofia Karlberg’s vocal range stayed pretty even throughout her cover. She didn’t vary her vocals as much as Sam Smith did in his original version. I felt that she was still able to bring the same kind of sad haunting emotion to the song that Sam did, but was able to do it without disrupting the song’s flow. I definitely liked that she didn’t vary her vocals as much because I thought that it made the song more enjoyable to listen

Vampire

...turning into vampires. The discovery illustrates a pagan practice common in some villages up until century ago, say historians. People deemed bad had their hearts stabbed after death, for fear they would return to feast on humans' blood. Similar archaeological sites have also been unearthed in other Balkan countries. Bulgaria is home to around 100 known "vampire skeleton" burials. Searchers stumbled across the latest two specimens, dating back to the Middle Ages, in the Black Sea town of Sozopol. "These skeletons stabbed with rods illustrate a practice which was common in some Bulgarian villages up until the first decade of the 20th Century," explained Bozhidar Dimitrov who heads the National History Museum in the Bulgarian capital Sofia. People believed the rod would pin the dead into their graves to prevent them from leaving at midnight and terrorising the living, the historian added. Archaeologist Petar Balabanov, who in 2004 discovered six nailed-down skeletons at a site near the...

Lost in Translation

...Lucy Parkhurst Dr. Thombre 11/5/13 Intercultural Movie Review When thinking of intercultural communication, the movie that comes to mind is Sophia Coppola’s “Lost in Translation”. Bob Harris, played by Bill Murray, is an American actor who visits Tokyo, Japan to film an ad for whiskey. Bob, away from his wife and his familiar western environment, experiences isolation, loneliness, and sleeplessness upon entering Tokyo. He is constantly frustrated, due largely in part to his understanding of what others, such as a film director, restaurant waiters, and prostitutes are trying to convey to him in Japanese. In the midst of all this, he meets Charlotte, an American woman who like him, is lonely because her husband is more interested in his photography work than her. Due to their shared loneliness and feelings of isolation and culture shock, Bob and Charlotte become friends, and begin a relationship through respect, trust, and self-disclosure. Bob and Charlotte become a mirror to each other, as both try to sort out their identities and how proceed from their own relational crossroads. While the audience may wonder throughout the movie if Bob and Charlotte’s relationship will ever become romantic, it is plain to see that they learn lots about themselves and each other as a result of being outsiders in this new and unfamiliar culture. The most evident intercultural concepts I noticed in the film is culture shock, language, and identity. The first concept, culture shock, is explained...

Miscommunication

...experiences. And this doesn't just apply to one person, it applies to everyone. This presents a conflict when filters are activated in a different matter, hearing what we choose to hear instead of what we are intended to hear. Now when it comes to context, people sometimes forget the situation in which a statement was said. The sentence "I hate you" can be taken many different ways when put into different situations, it could either be a meaningless threat or the end of a realtionship, depending on it's interpretation. Misconstrued context can further complicate a misunderstanding. For example, I was watching modern family the other night, and the funniest example of misunderstood context came up.. So the family goes to a restaurant and sofia vergara, who plays a family friend, goes "I feel like I'm losing my children in America, I feel like they're just gonna become boring old white people" just as a group of old white men walk by. And it just...

Case Response 1

...Walter Taylor AR115 In 1937, Pablo Picasso created a painting called the “Guernica”, oil on canvas. It was commissioned at the 1937 World Fair by the Republican Spanish government. Pablo Picasso’s paintings all tell a story, or reflect a personal meaning to Picasso. "My whole life as an artist has been nothing more than a continuous struggle against reaction and the death of art. In the picture I am painting — which I shall call Guernica — I am expressing my horror of the military caste which is now plundering Spain into an ocean of misery and death." Pablo Picasso When looking at the painting Guernica, I initially focused on the center of the mural. Many of the lines cross or meet near the middle of the work, most of which are diagonal. They start at the two bottom corners and meet toward the middle-top where the vertex is an oil lamp. The diagonals are not defined, but are created with overlapping, with dark and lightness. I noticed a woman on the bottom right she is picking herself up whose head, neck, and arm are along a diagonal. The lines tell a story and the painting is filled with sharp and jagged shapes that are used in positive and negative space. The faces are defined with light and stand out. The painting is done in black and white, there are mid-grays but I would have to say that the main focus is the contrast of the black and white. The painting gives us spatial depth. The overlapping of heads and arms and shapes are interpreted farther away, while others...
