I. Introduction

This review explains the structure and features of a novel entitled as Soledad’s Sister which has been written by Jose Dalisay. It follows a format in order to present the work of literature clearly and logically. Jose Dalisay, known as Butch Dalisay is a Filipino columnist, poet, writer, teacher and playwright. He has authored more than 15 books since 1984.He teaches English and has some administrative duties as a director of the University of the Philippines Institute of Creative Writing. Soledad’s Sister was his second novel after Killing Time in A Warm Place with the help of a David T.K. Wong fellowship at the University of East and Anglia and a Rockefeller grant in Bellagio, Italy. Soledad’s Sister is the story of a Filipina woman who suffered abuses in foreign countries. It is about the reuniting task of two sisters (Aurora and Soledad Cabahug) and the grieving family which falls to SPO2 Walter G. Zamora, a Filipino cop in the novel, the absurdity of everyday life in the face of countless deaths as the consequence of resilience and other doomed choices people make and the story that deals on the physical world of a man and his personal encounters with man in general and himself. It tackles domestic issues, the current life of many people especially the life of Filipino migrant workers. In his book launch/Dalisay’s lecture, he implied that Soledad’s Sister is open-ended or a story without having any resolution to the issues or problems that has been brought by the life circumstances of each characters. The story was told by many flashbacks of the character’s lives. As he wrote this novel, it pushed him to imagine more of people’s existence in the physical world and their deep feelings or sentiments. With it’s illusions of quick employment and easy money, it is the city that has lured millions of Filipinos out of a small town like Paez. The title itself is an articulation of the story’s problem. This book is an extended argument wherein readers can truly see the interaction of the past and present in Dalisay’s work. His technique plays as strong as the actions of the characters do because the novel’s themes are more than its subject matter. Some general readers will be immensely satisfied by the different discoveries in the novel while writers or students who are doing their review will do well to note them or at least to learn what separates the truly meaningful story from an ordinary one and what distinguishes the writer who is being true to himself from any other writers. This book is addressed to those people who are dreaming to work abroad despite the fact that life is a gamble and to Filipinos who are willing to take risks and gamble on though they didn’t know where their fate and dreams would lead them and most especially, to readers who are suffering from misunderstanding for Dalisay wanted them to realize that it’s better to be resolved right away than to become a big problem which will more complicate the situation. It’s best seen that one of the major themes that has been given emphasis or highlighted in the whole novel, from the beginning to the end is the death. It gives way to the underlying meaning of man’s existence and has emerged for such revelations. This novel, Soledad’s Sister was shortlisted on The Man Asian Literary Prize last 2007 which proves that it’s an essential or critical reading based on the reference itself or the primary text---Dalisay,Jose.Soledad’s Sister.

II.Evaluation

Writers, readers especially the one who’s doing a review for this particular field can easily adopt to this kind of writing. It only shows that this novel was clearly written and that Jose Dalisay truly focused on exploring ideas and doesn’t limit his thinking. Like many writers, he doesn’t stop to evaluate and brainstorm with his own. Words, words and more words are the tools he used to consider in doing his novel. He has achieved his goal for the novel has stated what he’s trying to point out and leaves very uplifting and unusual messages among those people who have read the book. He has turned the readers’ imagination up, side and down from what’s being expected to happen until to the series of events that was really fascinated and to the unordinary flow of the story itself which has been told through flashback techniques. Dalisay also brought us to his sharp observations of the bright and dark city of Manila itself. The author most important point in the novel is that sometimes there’s no good effect, upshot or cause in going to other countries or working abroad. But it also depends on the person whether he/she really wanted to go that far for some opportunities or for his needs, goals and ambitions in life. The beginning of the novel shows the negative side of a family who doesn’t care and disrespect things here in our cocoon Earth, things which are very traditional or has been a tradition to many Filipinos and that’s to grieve or to mourn for the dead as a sign of our respect. But on the contrary, after the mistake that has been committed by Al Viduya,a NAIA security guard who told them to get the body of one Filemon Catabay who’s beheaded in Saudi, they just go to mall, took some relaxations and then never pay attention to the next happenings. This book tells us that despite different problems and obstacles that life brings, we should always be aware, conscious and should always see things in its bright side and to look forward with hope everytime. It also tells us that problems are not hindrance in achieving such goals in life and it’s better to open our eyes and minds to the realities that are happening today and will happen tomorrow. Like the flow of the story in the novel, my life has been once, twice, thrice complicated because of the problems that I didn’t expect to come up and to arise. As a teenager, I have already experienced life’s biggest mistake. In my young mind, there are those of the sorrowful and unhappy moments that I’m always trying to forget but I can’t because I am always feeding them with memories. Like Rory, one of the characters in the novel, I have experienced the feeling of being alone, of being left by many of my loved ones, my relatives and many other people who has touched and helped me to stand with my life. Like her, I am always waiting for some great opportunities that this life may offer. And like her, I always wanted to achieve my dreams, goals and ambitions in life. Truly, I appreciated the book, how the story swings into it and the different messages that have been conveyed in the novel. I like how it flows just like the human interest because I have been carried away for it really fits to such Filipinos especially to many OFWs. But, I thought that there are so many characters which has been added and added and that’s one thing which has to be taken away from this novel because not all the characters are interesting though they all have their own angst form their past experiences.

III.Conclusion

Jose Dalisay has been different from many other Filipino writers for he didn’t follow most of the techniques, skill and arts of writing that their local stories contain. He has his own way which can be seen in his clearest; most precise chosen words in order to make his ideas stand out. He likes books that are not easy to read but definitely worth buying and worth reading which every word and turn of phrase seems to have deliberately thought out and chosen and there’s a complex uniformity or perhaps a uniform complexity in the way everyone speaks. In his site, PENMANILA, he said that he wanted the readers to take away from Soledad’s Sister is the thought that through understanding, one can learn to forgive and of course, to love.. To sum it up, there is clever blending of different genres-there are ideal/classic, mystery and drama. There are also romance, horror and comedy. It has tons of realistic details many of which were appealingly familiar to a typical Filipino. But one thing I wanted to know about this is that where is the ending because this novel just ends with its last three words “Just like that”. It just ends without clearing anything up. So, there’s practically no resolution whatsoever because in the end/in the last chapter of this novel, the major characters just have started to resolve each of their self-conflict. But, there is a nice fact that they have arrived fully-developed. Nevertheless, it stands firm, true and quite well. It made me see the power of English language as it portrays Philippines’ social sensibilities. It leaves a bright, humorous touch with both humor and heart. I still consider that it is an essential reading and I believe that this story needs a very good kind of ending which will really widen the readers’ imagination and which will truly open their eyes to the realities beyond this life, to the realities that we, Filipinos are being subjected to.

Disney vs Grimm

...Encouraging children to believe in a fantasy that is unobtainable is what Disney has successfully done with the help of their fairytale movies. Altering the gruesomeness of blood soaked feet and empty eye sockets of Grimm, into a lighter hearted humorous version of Cinderella has changed the moral and what we are trying to teach our children. If Disney’s movies were made identical to Grimm’s versions would they still be as magical, would the movies still be geared for a younger audience? Has Disney taken away the true hardships and meaning of the classic fairytale by censoring the stories to fit their ideal mold? Children who have grown up with Disney have been given entertainment first and to believe in a fantasy world and where morals are no longer the focus. Children want to believe in characters and certain setting and events that occur and Tolkien makes a good claim at that by saying, “children are capable, of course, of literary belief, when the story-maker's art is good enough to produce it.” The story of Cinderella is a tale of a girl that goes through abuse and is made to be a servant in her own home and given a new name in mockery of her suffering. Grimm made Cinderella’s mother present and an important factor in her personality by saying "Dear child, be good and pious, and then the good God will always protect thee, and I will look down on thee from heaven and be near thee." That line in itself shows the way society thought at that time and the type of message...

Classification Essay

...In a lifetime one will meet all different kind of people some will be foolish, mean, trustworthy, deceitful, generous, etc….Different types of characters is something that is reinforced in children’s stories. In Tales of Wonder from Many Lands, there are several different characters some were foolish, generous, abused, etc…. How can one classify the different characters in Tales of Wonder from Many Lands. One can classify the different characters according to how good or bad they treat others. Three different types of characters are brave and are willing to sacrifice themselves, abusers who treat other as slaves and victims of violence. The first group of characters I would like to identify are the victims of abuse. Most of which were females whom were victimized as a result of jealousy from step mother and or foolish fathers. At times a step parent may feel the need to shut the child that doesn’t biologically belong to them out of their lives and often mistreat them or belittle them. No matter how ridiculous or difficult the task they were given they never complained and always had faith that life will eventually get better. For instance in Cinderella the stepmother was determined keep Cinderella as slave by forcing her to do all house chores, intentionally throwing peas in piles of ashes and ordering her to hand pick the peas and return the peas to the stepmother, not allowing her to eat with the family and keeping her away from all social events. Such as...

Maloney Criminal Case

...CHRONICLES OF LEEDS It’s a Maloney place in Prison A tale of tragedy and loss swept the city of Leeds today as a man aged 48 died due to gunshot wounds. Mr Maloney’s stepfather died after a single shot pierced his heart and was dead in an instant. Heartbreakingly, the person behind the gun was Mr Maloney’s step son. The pair had been drinking heavily and celebrating due to Steven’s (Step-son) promotion and things took a turn for the worse when a quarrel broke out about who is the better marksman with a gun. Under the heavy influence of alcohol, the pair then decided to have a ‘quick on the draw’ contest- a challenge only thought as being apparent in a western. Maloney’s stepfather, then fatally, told his step son to ‘Go ahead, if you’ve got the guts’. Much to the dismay of the insult plus the temptation that was offered before him, Mr Maloney then proceeded to shoot at his step father, however he only intended on shooting near him to prove to his Stepfather that indeed he does have ‘the guts’. The Stepfather Michael, died seconds later as the bullets from the shotgun fired by Maloney pierced through his heart and local doctors upon arriving at the scene called the step father as ‘being in a irrecoverable condition’. Maloney, after firing and thus killing his stepfather, proceeded to call the police and state that ‘he murdered his stepfather’ and that he ‘didn’t aim I just pulled the trigger and he was dead’. PC Powell later told our reporters that Maloney was in a ‘stressed...

Isolation In The Secret World Of Woo's '

...“Sofia and Dawin didn’t have to help; no, they got to sit sweetly on the sofa and take questions while I served platter after platter of sandwiches” (Pg. 26) This expresses the theme of isolation because Miramar is being treated as a maid while her younger siblings are experiencing fame with all the interviews. She feels left out and isolated that she did not mysteriously get any talent after Ba died. Miramar tries to overcome this isolation by pretending to have a good time during the interview. “Wherever I went, to the mall, to the grocery store, or to the front of the house to water the lawn, everyone wanted to know about Sofia and Darwin” (Pg. 28) This captures the feeling of isolation because everywhere Miramar went, people would only ask about Sofia and Darwin about their talents. This made Miramar wonder why her Ba never gave her any talents and would doubt herself about her attitude and personality. “They would ask if I had developed any extraordinary powers. No, I would reply, embarrassed and take that as a cue to slip away” (Pg. 28) She feels embarrassed that she does not have any talents but her siblings were fortunate enough to mysteriously develop these gifts. This impacts her mental emotions as she starts to change her feelings towards her siblings. “Once again, I faded into the background, something I was used to doing in the outside would, but never had to do in the world of Woo” (Pg. 29) This shows isolation because Miramar feels that she has been disappeared...

Pixar And Cinderella

...I ran for my life. I didn’t grab no shoes or nothing Jesus. Cinderella is a fictional Disney Pixar character. She appears in many movies other than “Cinderella.” The movie “Ever After” is better than the Grimm’s tale “Cinderella.” In choosing either “Ever After” or “Cinderella,” I’d choose “Ever After.” For example, the evil step sisters did not get their body parts cut off in the movie. It’s an extremely .unpleasant thing to read. It could seriously scare a small child. Also including, one of the step sisters, in the movie, was willing to stand up for her. It is very important to stand up and be kind, even if you are standing alone. This teaches children a valuable life lesson. So, if you are looking for an appropriate movie...

In The Time Of Butterflies Sisterhood

...In Julia Alvarez’s novel In the Time of Butterflies, the bond of sisterhood displayed by the Mirabal sisters proves that even in the toughest of times a sister provides and shows strength to one another out of love and loyalty no matter the circumstances. For example, when Minerva first tells Maria Teresa about her secret meetings, MaTe overwhelmed with knowledge, fears not what knowing the truth about her country means “but that [Minerva] might let go” of her hand in that moment. (39) Although frightened, MaTe dreads losing her sister, who represents a lifeline of sanity to MaTe, more than Trujillo’s wrath. Minerva gives MaTe the strength to comprehend and accept the actuality of their plight in the Dominican Republic, and courageously jump...

Sacrifice To Trujillo's Revolution

...Although many thought it would never actually happen, the Trujillo regime has finally ended. Many credit this to the sacrifices the Mirabal sisters made but there are other things that are accredited for Trujillo’s fall. Various opinions regarding the sacrifices of the sisters have arisen shortly after the end of the revolution. While there are a large number of people that argue that the extreme sacrifices of the sisters were ineffectual to the revolution, others argue that they are the one and only reason that many people didn’t die. After some thought, I am forced to agree with the later. Minerva losing her license to practice law, and Minerva, Patria, and Mate abandoning their children were all justified as they meaningfully contributed to this revolution....

Seatle

...The Worst Trip to Disneyland It was a cloudy, rainy day that wasn’t starting out great for me. I sat up in the same bed I'd slept in for the past four days and the first thought that ran through my head was, June 29. Today I leave New York with my mom, stepdad, step brother, and I, had spent the last week in the state of New York the first three in Long Island for a golf tournament and the last four in the city. I hadn't done half the things I'd wanted to do nor had I seen half the things I wanted to see, but everything must come to an end and so this trip must to, as much as I didn't want it to or so I thought... We didn't even need to leave the city for the airport until noon, so we went to go see the massive library in the middle of Manhattan. Too early, it was time to head back to the hotel and grab our baggage before grabbing a taxi to the airport. At the airport, we got all checked in and passed security without any issues. At the gate, the four of us sat in the plush black chairs. About fifteen minutes before we were scheduled for departure, the flight attendants called our seat numbers and we filed onto the plane. In our seats, we carefully stowed our carry-ons and lightly fought over the window seat. The rest of the plane boarded, we were all buckled in, and were just waiting for the flight attendant to come and explain the safety features so we could be in the air. After about fifteen minutes of waiting about five minutes after our scheduled departure we weren't...

Cinderella

...This is the very well-known story of a young woman with a wicked stepmother. The young woman was kind and sweet with a gentle nature. But her two stepsisters had their mother’s (wicked stepmother) mannerisms and bad temper. In-turn, the kind young woman (Cinderella) got her kind and gentle nature from her mother, the first wife of the worthy man. The second wife showed her true colors shortly after getting married to the worthy man. The stepmother’s bad temper and wicked ways came out into the open. Cinderella was given very hard tasks around the house to do. After the chores, Cinderella was to sit among the cinders around by the fireplace chimney, from this she was to be known as Cinder-clod. Cinderella also had to sleep on a wretched mattress in a garret on the top of the house. Even though Cinderella was a pretty girl, her wretched clothes still did not prevented her from being hundreds of times more beautiful than her stepsisters. Plus her stepsisters had resplendent garments. In this classic story, I had originally forgotten it to the point that all I reread in the packet was mostly new to me. But after being familiarized with it, this wonderful story stored in memory came back in full force. When the king’s son (the prince) gave a ball, he invited all the higher up people. The two mean stepsisters of Cinderella were invited, but not her. What I found mean and reprehensible was the fact that Cinderella had went over the two meanies linen and ironed out their ruffles so they...

Butterfly Analysis

...The Death of a Butterfly “Las Mariposas”, The Butterflies, is the codename given to the Mirabal sisters upon their emergence into the Dominican Revolution. While the name grew from Minerva’s underground name, it also took on a symbol of hope, change, and transformation behind the suppression of the Dominican people. Throughout the novel each sister represents a different stage of the butterfly life cycle: Dede as an Egg, Patria as a caterpillar, Maria as a Pupa, and Minerva as an adult; each respective stage symbolizes the different levels of courage and sacrifice devoted to their country’s freedom from tyrant Rafael Trujillo. Alvarez uses symbolism in “The Time of the Butterflies” to suggest that the price of freedom paid by the Mirabal Sisters was not worth the cost when butterflies have such short lives. Butterflies have grown to symbolize a variety of different meanings throughout history and culture. Their metamorphosis is typically construed as a representation of change, purity, and rebirth, while some cultures view butterflies as a depiction of the soul or a transition between lives. Dede takes on the “Egg” stage of the butterfly life cycle as her character faces many obstacles despite being the least involved sister. Like the egg, Dede remains planted firmly where she was laid. “A chill goes through her, for she feels it in her bones, the future is now beginning. By the time it is over, it will be the past, and she doesn’t want to be the only one left to tell their...

Reading and Viewing Guide

...READING AND VIEWING GUIDE Title: Cinderella | I think it means: It’s the name of the main protagonist in the story, it means “of the ashes” in French. This is because after Cinderella would finish her work, she would sit at the corner of the chimney where there were cinders and ashes. | Key Words and Phrases: 1.)“Cinderwench”2.) “There came thither the finest princess, the most beautiful ever was seen with mortal eyes; she showed us a thousand civilities, and gave us oranges and citrons.” | I think these words are included because…1.) “Cinderwench” is what Cinderella’s elder stepsister called her to mock her, cinder because she was dirty and wench because it means servant or a prostitute. 2.) This phrase was said by Cinderella’s stepsister to her and what’s ironic is that the “finest princess” she’s talking about is Cinderella. This shows that her stepsisters find her to be really attractive but are just jealous. | Big Ideas and Quotations:“When she got home she ran to seek out her godmother, and, after having thanked her, she said she could not but heartily wish she might go next day to the ball, because the King's son had desired her.” | I remember this because…This quote shows that Cinderella was indeed very special, since she impressed the Prince and he choose her over the several other girls at the ball. | Resolution: The Prince falls in love with Cinderella and marries her. | I think the Big Idea is…That there is hope for everyone and that the good path...

Time of the Butterflies

..."Every decision you make shapes your own destiny." In the time of the butterflies, Julia Alvarez has two characters by the name of Minerva and Patria Mirabal. This book is a great book to read. The Mirabals were farmers in the Dominican Republic . The sisters grew up in a middle class, cultured environment raised by Enrique Mirabal Fernandez and Mercedes Reyes Camilo. The four sisters married and raised families. Unlike her sisters, Dede never attended college, and instead worked as a homemaker and helped out run the family business in agriculture and Cattle. "Family is all you have sometimes." The Mirabal sisters are a very interesting group of people. I will be comparing Patria and and Minerva. Minerva and Patria are both pretty girls. They were both married, and we're both very sensitive and nice. Now in the book the sisters go through a lot of hard times. They almost get killed and some do get killed. It was almost as if they were slaves being held captive by a white man yet it was them being held captive by Trujillo. Back then the girls weren't treated as girls they were basically treated like a man if you would say so. But it seems as if as long as they have each other they'd be fine. Even though their dad died and all that other bad stuff they still had each other and they still survived until basically the end of the book. "When love is unconditional, life is good." There is so much love in this book. That's why people get married, that's why people join together...
