The human brain has two phases in the creative process: to produce ideas and to judge them. Recently in my work place, I had to use the creative process to solve a problem.
The first stage of the creative process is searching for challenges. As the Assistant Kitchen Manager in the restaurant, I constantly have to look for original ways to meet challenges in an original and effective way. I don’t usually have to seek out challenges as they come to me in the form of an obvious problem. One night, one of our food runners named Mason arrived for his shift at 4:00pm. He had worked earlier that day from 11:30am to 2:00pm. He doesn’t drive a vehicle so he stays in the nearby shopping center and returned later that day for his evening shift. This is where the challenge began: Mason came back to the restaurant reeking of alcohol and bragged to several team members that he drank in between his shift. I immediately identified this as a challenge that needed to be addressed. The first stage of the creative process represents the habit of searching for challenges on a constant basis but this challenge was obvious to everyone.
This is where the second stage of the creative process shifted: expressing the problem or issue. The problem was that we had a team member who had drunk alcohol between his shifts and thought it would be alright to come back to work. In order for me to properly express the problem, I first had to address the most common mistake in making the identification: Was I only seeing this from one perspective? I asked some fellow team members who were working that shift if they had heard the same information that I had and they had confirmed the facts. The issue was as clear as day and thus transitioned into the third stage of the creative process: investigating the problem.
During this process, I developed a personal curiosity about the situation I was dealing with. As a sober member of Alcoholics Anonymous for nearly four years, I wondered why Mason would show up to work drunk. I asked myself, “Is Mason and alcoholic or does he just make unwise choices?” I have known Mason roughly three years now and have observed his lack of work ethic and blatant carelessness. He is the type of individual who cares only about his own well being and even less of others. For this particular circumstance, I was able to use three techniques of curiosity that evening. I observed what was going on that evening. Normally, Mason is loud and raucous; but tonight he was far beyond that. He shouted and screamed across the restaurant alarming team members and guests. I took note of the other server’s dissatisfaction in his actions. I watched how he acted and reacted to certain team members and was met with negative responses by all. Not everyone had known that he was intoxicated, only a few did. Lastly, I recognized the opportunity in the controversy. Mason was known for his inept behavior and insubordination on a daily basis. If he left the team it would only benefit the restaurant.
The problem in this situation was that it had personal ties to my own struggles with alcohol which ended four years ago. I needed to try to view this from other perspectives to ensure that mine wasn’t askew. One perspective was that Mason did in fact have a problem with alcohol and needed help. Maybe it was just a blatant case of misunderstanding. He could have lied and said that he was drinking but actually didn’t. Or he could have spilled beer on himself from running food and drinks to different tables.
I was able to refine my expression of the problem and decided the best action to take based on what action I should take. My action was look out for everyone’s best interest that night. As I began to think of a different course of action, the fourth stage of the creative process came into play. I began to produce ideas about how to handle the situation. Should I confront Mason and question him? This wouldn’t be a good idea because he might become hostile or something could backfire. Do I call the crisis hotline? The crisis hotline is usually for things that would involve the press or news interaction. Should I just say nothing and completely ignore my own morals and ethics? I definitely wouldn’t just stand by and let something like this pass as acceptable. The objective in this stage is to generate enough ideas to decide on the proper action to take based off of personal ethics and beliefs. Chapter 5 in the text states that “a creative idea is both imaginative and effective”. I constructed the pros and cons of what could potentially unfold and quickly constructed how the scenario could turn out.
Once I had the facts, I confronted the manager on duty and we discussed the situation. We knew that he had been drinking and admitted to several employees that he had done so and I knew that the right action would be taken. The manager pulled Mason into the office and questioned him. After they both came out of the office, Mason was allowed to return to his shift and continue to work. I couldn’t believe it! I questioned the manager and he said that he couldn’t smell the alcohol on Mason but he did admit to him that he had consumed alcohol just an hour ago. Now I was dealing with a drunken team member and a manager who failed to make the correct judgment call. This posed a huge health and safety hazard to the team and the guests.
I decided to text message the General Manager who was not working that evening. I informed her of what happened and she quickly got hold of the manager who was working that night. Mason was sent home shortly thereafter. When I left the restaurant and went home that night, I wrote an account of what happened and sent it to my GM and the Regional Operations Director and informed him exactly what happened that evening. The next morning Mason was terminated and a message was sent to the entire team about what can happen if you show up under the influence at work.
Using critical thinking in this process allowed me to go through the proper course of actions that evening. I believe that the ideas I produced along the way allowed me to thoroughly investigate the problem and come up with some logical solutions.

...Solve a Problem PHL/458 Determining Disciplinary Action for Employees in the Workplace My role as manager requires me to observe all loss prevention issues and perform the necessary disciplinary action associated with them. When observing employee issues and assessing the disciplinary action previously taken in the past, I noticed the course of action for offenders was limited. You simply were reprimanded once and fired if the problem persisted. I initially thought this was unfair to our employees because every problem did not warrant the same disciplinary action. After critical examination of possible solutions to the disciplinary process within our company, I concluded management should implement better training for its employees. This would help in our attempts to maximize production and minimize employee mistakes. After evaluating this argument and eliminating other possible solutions and assumptions, I decided this resolution would be best for our company as well as our employees. By providing extensive training to our employees, we would cut down on employee errors and correct mistakes that have been previously made in the past. While starting the process of implementing the new training for our employees, I realized the solution of providing training was a good idea for our company and its employees; however, this solution did not completely solve the original problem of the actual disciplinary action that would be used when an employee made a mistake...

...Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). These diagnoses are not always the case and also teachers are not medical doctors. This paper will inform you about my creative process to solve the problem of my son’s learning disability. In first grade my son was having a problem with numbers adding and subtracting, and the teacher wanted to fail him in math, I fought that battle to figure out what the issue really was. I now realized I used the creative process to help me solve the problem. There are many stages in the creative process. The first stage is searching for challenges. There were many challenges trying to figure out what my son’s learning disability was. Many thought because he is a twin and was born premature that he was just developing slowly. Once he got in elementary school the teacher said he, had attention deficit disorder. I agreed with neither, I knew there had to be something else going on. The second state is Expressing the Problem or issue. Because the school was content on trying to fail him in math with no interventions, I expressed the problem with his doctor who did test and stated that in fact he did not have ADD, but he does have a developmental delay in math concepts. The third stage is investigating the problem or issue. I took my son to a specialist on my own to get him tested. The only thing the school kept asking was where his father was and does he see him? These questions had nothing to do with him not getting...

...Solve the problem Solve the problem Describe creative process The four stages in the creative process as described in Ch. 5 of the text are the following: searching for the problem, expressing the problem or issue, investigating the problem or issue, and producing ideas. * Stage one of the creative process – searching for the problem – emphasizes the importance of responding to problems in triggering one’s creativity (Ruggiero, 2009). * Stage two centers on expressing the problem or issue in numerous ways and finding the most creative and helpful ideas. * Stage three objectives is obtaining the information necessary to solve the problem or issue. * The fourth and final stage of the creative process deals with producing the ideas necessary to solve the problem or determine a stance on the issue. Personal Challenge Considering the four stages in the creative process that work to solve an issue or problem, a personal challenge that I can apply the stages to would be in re-evaluating myself as a whole and making life changes to become a better wife, mother, and person in general. I used and applied three out of the six techniques described in Ch. 6 to determine which areas needed the most work. The first technique, “being observant,” help me realized how tired my husband has been in dealing with our children shown through his look, the faint circles under his eyes and slower movement in his style. I realize that I can be from more help and...

The first stage of the creative process is searching for challenges. During this stage of the process a person should become accustomed to the habit of constantly searching for a challenge. It is important to note that a person can be creative only in response to challenges that he or she perceives (p. 105). The second stage in the creative process is expressing the problem or issue. Solve a Problem

...Our chapter describes four stages to the creative process. The first stage is to search for challenges regularly. Not all challenges will be just black and white. Some challenges require one to utilize their creative thought process to allow their mind to think of areas that may need a little improving.  The second stage is to express the problem or issue.  Perhaps writing out different thought patterns and coming up with an idea that best match the correct or needed result can stimulate progress in the process.  The third stage in the creative process is investigating the problem or issue. If you encountered a specific problem or issue that you couldn’t resolve, you may need to ask someone with more experience or research the issue to reach an adequate solution. Producing ideas is the fourth and final stage. One must make a precise decision to determine which ideal concept they will take.  In this stage there lie two obstacles.  While trying to produce ideas one must fight the urge to limit your ideas.  The other obstacle is not settling on the first idea that comes to mind and to try harder to come up with something different. Some may think their first thought is also the best result, but you should challenge yourself to think past your first thought to chime into your creative nature. A personal challenge for me was going back to school. I had to think of all the different obstacles going back to school would pose on my normal day to day routine. Returning to school...

...Solve a Problem Paper There is so much more to solving a problem than most people think there is. There is a whole process that was created to help identify challenges and creatively find solutions to the problems created. In this paper, I will explain each stage in the creative process and will choose a personal challenge that I will walk through the creative process. There are four stages to the creative process that include searching for challenges, expressing the problem or issue, investigating the problem or issue, and producing ideas. In the first stage: searching for challenges, it is expected for challenges to be constantly thought about and searched for. The text book “The Art of Thinking”, it says that the importance of searching for challenges is reflected in the fact that you can be creative only in response to challenges that you perceive (Ruggiero, 2009). In other words, without challenges there is no need for the mind to be creative. The second stage of the creative process is expressing the problem or issue. In this stage, it is best to find an expression that will yield the most helpful ideas. When looking for the best expression, it is looking for the best way to identify the problem or issue in a question form. The third stage: investigating the problem or issue, is where necessary information is collected to effectively deal with the problem or issue. Lastly, the fourth stage: producing ideas, is the stage where ideas are produced to decide what...

Often the ways in which people handle these issues will affect the ways in which they are viewed within the organization, which will either help or hinder them in the end. The creative process can often help employees to navigate through issues in a professional manner that presents new ways of dealing with issues. For example, various school leaders met to evaluate ways in which they could decrease the number of students who become college drop-outs. Students’ dropping out of college...

Solve a Problem Paper

...The creative process uses four steps to solve a problem. They are searching for challenges, identifying the problem, investigating it and finding solutions for the problem. My personal challenge has been with the wiring harness for the glow plug system and starting system on my GM diesel truck. I had to wonder why GM routed the wire harnesses in such a way as to be exposed to the most heat which will eventually destroy the wires and their protective covering. Since I am in the process of installing a rebuilt engine in the truck I decided to see if I could repair the wiring harnesses and if there was a possible better way to route them. So I could alleviate the electrical problems I have had with this truck specific to this area. I have had other problems with this truck that I have done upgrades on or improvements which turned out very well so I felt confident I could solve and improve on what GM did. The problem is this is on the right hand side of the engine where the exhaust driven turbo charger is located. The location of the wire harnesses is a couple inches away from the two exhaust pipes and the special oversize exhaust manifold which the turbo mounts too. The heat from all this seems to causes the glow plug wiring system to become inoperative and makes the truck hard to start. This will cause the glow plugs not to operate because the wires feeding them electricity to operate are heat damaged which builds up resistance and low voltage to the glow plugs. Glow plugs need...

According to the book “ The Art of Thinking” by Ryan Ruggiero, the greatest difficulty people have in thinking about problems and issues is evaluating the various solutions and choosing the best one. Growing up most of us desire to have a family and a nice comfortable home. Taking the first step to buying a house is a difficult decision and most couples goes through a lot of planning when preparing to make this commitment. Aside from financial support, searching for the right house takes a lot a lot of time. When the house is found that’s desired the next step is to investigate the neighborhood. Many times this step is omitted but it may be the most important step to making a final decision because the neighborhood as a whole is the place which people invest, raise their children and live for many years to come. Making sure to cover all needed steps to buying a home is most crucial for peace and happiness to be united inside and outside the home. How to Solve Destoner Machine Noies Problem

...In daily operation, DESTONER MACHINE may have some noises. How to find out the cause of the noises and how to solve the problem? First, when the destoner machine wind screen has noises, this always has close relations with the wind screen conformity. Due to the rough point of weld in corn processing, the wind screen small mouth margin height is not consistent. In allocation, it always has friction with the rotor end. Second, electromagnetism sound: it can be divided into high frequency and low frequency. It may be because of the bad conformance of the axle iron core chute, the rough iron core inner chamber and the inconformity of the rotor outer diameter processing. Usually we can adopt the method of changing rotor to solve this problem. Third, high and low voice from the motor: a. The destoner machine stator and rotor have uneven air gap. If the voice is sometimes high and sometimes low, and the voice interval time keeps invariant, then it may be caused by the bearing abrasion which makes the stator and the rotor not concentric. b. Unbalanced three-phase-current. c. Loose iron core. Fourth, if there has uneven crash, it may be caused by the crashing between the fan blade and the fan housing. Fifth, the noises from the stator and the rotor friction belongs to the limiting condition of chamber sweeping. Finally, other factors also may cause destoner machine noises, such as slot sedge part popping, vibration, long fixed bolt of the bearing cap. We should check whether...

Can Economics Solve the Problem of Global Warming?

...Can Economics Solve the Problem of Global Warming? The potential negative effects of global warming are very serious. Even by just concentrating on economic factors, global warming has the potential to cause unprecedented costs to the global economy. Yet, despite the forecasted dangers and economic costs, there seems to be a disinterest in implementing necessary policies to avert the consequences of global warming. There are many reasons why it is difficult to deal with the issue of global warming such as the problem of “free rider”, externalities, intergenerational externalities etc. Global warming is by definition a phenomena which affects every country. Pollution may be caused by a small percentage of developed countries and yet those who suffer the most may be pacific islands who contribute nothing to global warming. When it comes to reducing carbon emissions there is a classic free rider problem. Countries can benefit from lower emissions by relying on other countries to make sacrifices and reduce their pollution levels. The problem is that countries can then become reluctant to start reducing emissions until other countries start reducing emissions as well. Why should a tiny country like Sweden make sacrifices in reducing carbon emissions, if the US continues to create a large part of the world's CO2 emissions? Global warming is to a large extent caused by externalities. When you drive an SUV, the contribution to global warming is an external cost which you don't...
