When I joined MSI as Township Coordinator for the SRH service provision project in Aung Lan Township of Magway Region, I had to start from scratch because there was only an unfurnished empty building as a project office. In addition, the project had been delayed for a couple of months because of the delays in recruitment process and I was assigned with the responsibility to set up the office with a big team and to implement project activities as soon as possible. There were a total of 20 staff including medical doctors and nurses for mobile service provision, finance and admin staff, lab technicians, community facilitators, nurse aids and outreach workers under my supervision. Working collaboratively with the team, I managed to furnish the office with necessary equipment and furniture. Although two light trucks were needed to provide mobile services to over a hundred targeted villages, we were able to rent only one car initially in this small district township. To overcome this, I worked with my team to develop a mobile trip plan so that two mobile teams could cover as many villages as possible in one trip until another car could be rented. In this way, I was able to implement planned activities efficiently with limited resources.
Another bigger challenge came when some monks in villages started to oppose our family planning services on religious grounds. Although we were routinely doing advocacy activities at township and village levels with local authorities and other stakeholders before starting our activities, I went further to meet the presiding monk of the township and explained him about our project activities. I also invited the monk to our office to give him an overview of our work for improving maternal, newborn and child health. I undertook further advocacy with local authorities as well as with opposing monks. As a successful outcome of these efforts, we were able to cover all targeted villages without any further problem.

Solving the United States Most Pressing Challenges

...Solving the United States Most Pressing Challenges La Tonia Shedd November 18, 2012 Solving the United States Most Pressing Challenges I believe that the United States of America is currently facing unprecedented challenges. If our nation fails to address these challenges such as national security, the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, and potentially catastrophic climate change we will lose our positions as a world power. One of the main power underlies all of the United States’ challenges would be dependence on foreign oil. If the United States can dramatically reduce its oils dependence, the direct effect would be less exposure to the Middle Eastern turmoil, dampened competitive pressures in Asia and significantly reduce funds flowing to terrorist activities. The only solution to our current economic crisis is a radical shift to alternative-energy development. Investment in the alternative-energy industry would immediately create domestic jobs in the United States’ hardest hit industries, such as construction and manufacturing, green investments can create up to four times as many domestic jobs per dollar invested those traditional fossil-fuel investments. In addition to creating jobs, alternative-energy development will reduce utility bills in American households, freeing up income for consumer spending. Further, if the United States eliminates its foreign oil consumption, oil import money will stay in the United States and provide a huge economic...

Leaderrship

...Problem Solving-Based Scenarios: An Approach to Identify Opportunities to Create Value for the Business Introduction Today’s realities of leadership include increasing competition and intensity, reducing cycle times and costs, and improving productivity while at the same time growing the business and meeting increasing customer and Wall Street expectations. These pressures require leaders to redefine and redesign how to think, how to lead, and how to act. These shifts in the very nature of leadership and of work demand that the leader spend more time figuring out what to do next and how best to do it to add value to the corporation and the stakeholders. Problem solving is a core capability required to realize these opportunities. Leadership can be seen as a process of identifying opportunities and solving problems. Some problems are important; some are not important. Some problems are easy to define; others are complex. Some problems are easy to solve; others are difficult. Some are solved alone; many are solved with others, often under tremendous political and organizational pressures. Sometimes there is a problem; sometimes there is not a problem. All problem solving and solution development methods follow a process that may be adapted by the user and to the particular scenario or situation. As human beings, we tend to look to preserve the status quo and see the world as it has been. We look for patterns or approaches that have been successful in the past. These...
