Ray Bradbury’s Dandelion Wine: Summary & Analysis

...Ray Bradbury’s Dandelion Wine: Summary & Analysis Dandelion wine was a story about a twelve-year old boy named, Douglas Spaulding. Douglas was just a typical twelve year old boy, who lived to play, run around and do what any other twelve year old would do. Not a very physically fit person, but it didn’t really seem to matter. He was a person who got what he wanted, not by whining for it, but by keeping his mind on whatever he wanted and setting out a goal for it. He was a happy boy and not many problems, till now, and he had a younger brother named Tom. Tom Spaulding, age ten, did what other little brothers like to do, tag along with his older brother. He was never in the way of his older brother; in fact they liked being together. Tom took every day slowly, writing most everything down, the first day of summer, the first this, his first that. Dandelion wine took place in a small town called Green Town, Illinois. In Green Town the Spauldings owned a patch of land that they grew dandelions on. Every summer, Douglas, Tom, and their grandfather would pick the dandelions and bottle it for wine. Summers in Green Town were very hot and winters cold. It was a town where almost everyone knew each other like a big family. In this story many problems confronted Douglas. There were many deaths, Great-Grandma, Helen Loomis, Colonel Freeleigh and Elizabeth Ramsal, which were friends and neighbors of Douglas. A good friend of Douglas, named John Huff, moved away to Milwaukee because...

Military

...Military This is a paper about how gay’s are aloud within the military. I will have this paper based on the pros and cons on the subject. It will be how I feel about it and along with how I think others will be based on this subject. It will be a broad band about this and will hopefully get the point of why I think it is ok with gay’s being in the military. With gay’s being within the military, I’m ok with it. I was in the Marines and with the guys I was with who knows if they were or were not gay already. They have their own life and choices as well as anybody else that wants to be in the military. Everybody deserves a chance to do something that they would like to do in their life. They are people like you and me. There are people out there that will not do anything for the military but then you have people that want to do it but cant because of what they believe in. That would be like telling someone that they can’t do it because of their race. Everyone has their own point of view when it comes to something like this but I think when they started to allow gays in the military it has really changed more people than it was made out to be. Not only for the gays life but also people that have nothing against them are happy for them to be able to do something that others won’t ever think about doing. When I first heard that they were aloud I was too happy about it because you never know how they will react to certain things, but when it came to me thinking about it, it’s a good...

...it is something that is pretty much a health service provider something that was started up by two people that who built most of their life into the home health care profession which was at a medical center in Georgetown. The both of them were able to see the perfect time to be able to start something new, something that would help change the health care industry and to be able to take that and start a new business. Even though they really didn’t go through the steps they were supposed to take in order to get to where they need to be and the amount of resources they had was very small so pretty much within that time period given a year or so there business has grown so much that it was more than what they expected it to be. Being able to acceptance something like this especially during this market was something they were focused on doing and wanted to make sure this actually followed through and all of their hard work pretty much paid off in the end. They understood that the main thing was the customer’s needs and to be able to show that they cared as well as be able to address very competitive personnel as well so that they can be able to develop and pursue the policies that would have to be addressed in all different sides of this business in the home health care serves that would pretty much be set up as giving the needs to the customers and patients versus other companies who do not look at it in that way and just look it at as something just plain. Donnellan

...an assertion […] uses the description to enable his audience to pick out whom or what he is talking about and states something about that person or thing” (Donnellan, 285). When definite descriptions are used referentially, they are used as a tool to pinpoint a certain thing or person. In other words, the definite description is used as a way to bring something to someone’s attention. For instance, a sentence with a definite description that is used referentially could be, ‘The guy with the Ray Bans looks pretty cool’. Here the definite description in the sentence is ‘the guy with the Ray Bans.’ Donnellan points out an important trait about the referential use of definite descriptions. He states, “In the referential use of a definite description we may succeed in picking out a person or thing to ask a question about even though he or it does not really fit the description” (Donnellan, 287). For the given example, ‘The guy with the Ray Bans looks pretty cool,’ the speaker or the person communicating to another picks out something, namely a person who is wearing Ray Bans. However, as Donnellan argues, we can still be successful in picking that specific person or thing out even if the person is not wearing Ray Bans. In other words, we can still understand that we have picked out a specific person, even if the person happens to be wearing a different type of sunglasses. This example shows that the definite description, ‘The guy with the Ray Bans,’ does not have to be a correct...

Religion and the Media

...they want and people won't know about it. The media can put their point across and not say anything about the other arguments involved. They have one view however, this is not necessarily the right view. In this essay, I am going to view both arguments and then conclude with my opinion and the argument that I agree with. In the media, there are a lot of programmes such as Family Guy, Citizen Khan, The Simpsons and Father Ted where there are jokes about religion. I feel that most of these jokes are funny however, I think that some of the jokes aren't funny and that they could offend some people of that religion. I think that this quote, 'Offending the minority to entertain the majority' explains what the media thinks. But is it right to do this? What if the 'minority' was the whole religion? How would we know? I don't agree with this quote. This is because we don't know how big the 'minority' is. It could only be a few people but it also could be the whole religion it was directed at. People take things in different ways. How would the media know how many people it was going to offend? There can be lots of damage done by stereotyping/ joking about a religion as it is a subject that many people feel strongly about. It is something people follow for their whole lives and something that they look up to. It is very offensive when someone makes a joke about it. This quote: 'There are no limits to comedy...there is nothing you cannot be funny about...' is similar as I feel the same...

Loss and Death

...Elizabeth Bishop show us that losing something is not a big deal as she states “the art of losing isn’t hard to master” (Bishop, 1). By this, we can say that death or losing something is the main idea of the two stories. “The Story of an Hour” is very explicit and takes death to a more serious situation where the wife finds out that her husband has been in a mortal accident. “One Art” talks about losing something and talks about the loss of a lover. Grouping these ideas, we can say that the two stories join a special part which is the loss of someone special or a loved one. “Lose something every day” (Bishop, 4). This is the 4th line of the poem. It is telling us that we need to practice to lose something every day, and day by day we will get used to it. The narrator is giving a general idea of how easy it is to lose something. In life people can lose things very easily and in a very silly way. Losing someone, a loved one, can be devastating. This is a way to show how the nature of the world is, how common it is to lose someone and how easy it is to lose something. A woman is told that her husband has been in an accident and that he has died. The loss of her husband turns out to be something no one would have expected. At first, she feels miserable as described in the story; “she sank, pressed down by a physical exhaustion that haunted her body and seemed to reach into her soul” (Chopin, 66). After this feeling, she suddenly starts to feel something different. Her mind starts to...
