Do the Right Thing Reaction Paper
"Do the Right Thing" is the 1989 film, directed, written, produced by and starring none other than the very talented, Spike Lee. It also stars an assorted cast of very talented actors that includes the likes of Danny Aiello, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Richard Edson, Giancarlo Esposito, Bill Nunn, and John Turturro.
New York City, New York is where the film is set, in the Brooklyn area in a neighborhood of Bedford-Stuyvesant. The film tells the story of a wild Brooklyn day on one of the hottest days of the summer. In the movie we are introduced to our protagonist, a young black man who goes by the name of “Mookie.” Mookie is an interesting character, not possessing many qualities that you would come to expect of the protagonist in a film. One of his strongest qualities is his love and protectiveness as a brother to his older sister whom he lives with. Mookie also wants to provide for his girlfriend and his son, but ultimately lacks the ambition to better his situation.
He works as a delivery man at the neighborhood Italian owned pizzeria, “Sal’s Famous Pizzeria,” which is a very out of place establishment amidst the predominantly black Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood. But Sal, the pizza parlor’s owner doesn’t plan on changing his location any time soon. Sal’s sons also work with him at the pizzeria. Sal's oldest son, Pino, is a very racist and bigoted. He’s disgusted by having to work in a black neighborhood and tries to impart that same mentality on his little brother, Vito. Vito is more objective than his brother and doesn’t share that same bigoted attitude toward blacks. And is actually friends with Mookie, his brother is very unhappy about their friendship.
Mookie and Sal butt heads often about Mookie’s job performance. Mookie doesn’t like it there and doesn’t take his job seriously at all. He often slacks off and while on the job, makes trips to see his girlfriend, Tina, who he has a three-year old son with. She pleads with him to make a better life for himself, and make more time for her and his son. He seems to love Tina but is not committed enough to expand their relationship beyond a couple visits a month. He seems to be frustrated with his current situation, living with his sister, his job that he hates, and the state of his relationship with Tina and his son, but he’s not exactly proactive about how to remedy it.
The movie is littered with a variety of different characters, each having their own quirks and misgivings. Every character seems to have something interesting to do or say, or is going through some kind of conflict, no matter how small their role. I found it a bit confusing, though this element gave the characters genuineness, their portrayals in the movie were often very over the top, and almost caricature-esque. That is one of the bigger issues I had with the film. The sensitive issues that are handled here would’ve probably been more appropriately represented with more slightly toned down portrayals.
The neighborhood goes into turmoil when Sal’s restaurant is targeted as being racist against blacks. And a wild fight breaks out in the pizzeria. Mookie is caught in the middle; he doesn’t seem to be ready to side with Sal and the job that he hates, nor the community around him that is propagating most of the violence. But as tensions rise and the violence escalates. The police try to get the violent situation under control, but their own prejudices for the community leads to them brutally killing someone. The community erupts and Sal’s Famous Pizzeria is destroyed and burned down in the wake of the killing and leaves the neighborhood in disaster.
It's a very entertaining movie, a very stimulating film that that is definitely worth a watch. Though I don’t think it was intended to be when it came out, the film is like a period piece, with all of its 80s imagery. I don’t believe it would achieve what it set out to do politically today; maybe it did originally when it came out in the 80s. It just felt a bit too dated. While being one of the most primitive attitudes one can take, I believe racism has evolved to become something much more complicated now. The arguments stated in the film came across as way too simplified and general, almost in a very crude and rudimentary way, even right down to the closing scene where two very conflicting quotes from Dr. Martin Luther King and Malcolm X (arguably the two most recognizable names in the civil rights movement) are put up on screen. It was just too obviously polarizing; a little more subtlety would have been welcome. But I do believe the simplicity and straightforwardness are part of its appeal. This was the theme of a lot of films to come out of the 80s so I can’t completely fault Spike Lee. I do believe how simple the story is does support the comedic aspect, which is a theme present throughout in the film and provides a more entertaining experience.
There is one thing that stood out to me a lot. Oddly, there are no typical cinema heroes. The hero trope will be a hard one to spot in this film. Everyone seems to have a very pitiless nature in this film, or maybe it was just the amount of obscenities spewing from every character, but the standard good guy you can root for is absent here. Not even Mookie came across as someone who you could get behind, with his un-ambitious nature and down and out attitude.
Spike Lee did great with Do the Right Thing, staging a very entertaining and honest look at race relations and what people’s feelings were toward race at that time. The racism that existed then and now are two very different things, as a society I believe we are on the right track, but this film is a reminder of how far we have come and an example of what is possible with the right attitude.

...Arctic Mining Consultants (Case Study) Tom Parker enjoyed working outdoors. At various times in the past, he worked as a ranch hand, high steel rigger, headstone installer, prospector, and geological field technician. Now 43, Parker is a geological field technician and field coordinator with Arctic Mining Consultants. He has specialized knowledge and experience in all nontechnical aspects of mineral exploration, including claim staking, line cutting and grid installation, soil sampling, prospecting, and trenching. He is responsible for hiring, training, and supervising field assistants for all of Arctic Mining Consultants' programs. Field assistants are paid a fairly low daily wage (no matter how long they work, which may be up to 12 hours or more) but are provided meals and accommodation. Many of the programs are operated by a project manager who reports to Parker. Parker sometimes acts as a project manager , as he did on a job that involved staking 15 claims near Eagle Lake, Alaska. He selected John Talbot, Greg Boyce, and Brian Millar, all of whom had previously worked with Parker, as the field assistants. To stake a claim, the project team marks a line with flagging tape and blazes along the perimeter of the claim, cutting a claim post every 500 yards (called a length). The 15 claims would require almost 60 miles of line in total. Parker had budgeted seven days (plus mobilization and demobilization) to complete the job. This meant that each of the four stakers (Parker, Talbot...

The Screen Saver

...staff—specifically John Blank, the Jewish employees and the Christian employees particularly, and the HR person or department. As the owner of the agency, Ed Harrison is affected. Due to the small size of the firm, he will ultimately be involved in the incident between Blank and the born-again Christian. If the company had been bigger, Harrison may not have heard about this issue if it was resolved through HR or another party. John Blank is clearly affected as he is offended by the religious screen saver of another employee. He claims that the other Jewish employees are also offended—though a first hand account from them is not provided. Consequently, Blank has spoken with the born-again Christian—and has not yet resolved the matter. Thus, this employee is now too affected. This can potentially lead to a clash between the religions 2) What are the likely consequences? Though a discussion of how HR should handle this scenario will be followed shortly, consequences that I can talk about now are any of those actions that will lead to resolvment. Not all people can always be happy. In this scenario, the best thing to do is whatever causes the least bit of disruption to the workflow. Again due to the small nature, and lack of privacy at the firm, this issue is one that may need to gt fixed fast—which can lead to hasty solutions that will not...

Me, Me Me

...In January 2008 a British journalist, Sarfraz Manzoor, wrote an article with the title “Me, Me, Me” that appeared in the magazine “Esquire”. He gives his opinion on how the phenomenon “New Narcissism” has its influences on today’s society through the Internet. And he leaves us with the impression that there is a reason to be worried about today's youth being more narcissistic than ever before. Narcissism is not new for us. New Narcissism is a modern version of the phenomenon narcissism. And it has been known since ancient Greece with the Greek myth about Narcissus that fell in love with his own reflection in the water. The man that got narcissism recognized as a medical condition was Sigmund Freud (l. 53). But in our age, the word, narcissism, does not seem that serious and is mostly defined as a phenomenon. This New Narcissism has come to life because society reproduces itself (l. 59). And growing numbers of people are more narcissistic according to a study performed by psychologists. Sarfraz Manzoor, who has written this article, describes that New Narcissism is the offspring of today’s society. He makes an example by including a person named Chris Crocker. Crocker became famous because he put a video on the Internet where he defended the celebrity Britney Spears. There can be two reasons for his behaviour. Is he doing this to tell people that they shall back off and because he is fond of her? Or is he doing this to get attention? But it does not seem as if Britney is the...

[Related: Stars Without Photoshop] In the photos, the 30-year-old singer's hairline does look lower than usual and her part is in a different spot. Delivery Issues to Canada Due to Paperwork with Customs

...we’re having with the shipment and delivery of items that are being delayed due to paperwork issues we’re having with customs. Since the grand opening is right around the corner, it’s imperative that all team members pull together to address these issues as soon as possible or this could cause many problems for us in this new market. It’s also just as important for the team to come up with ways that will afford us the ability to resolve these issues immediately so that we can continue to do business in this market. As the team leader, my main goal is to minimize the process of completing paperwork as much as possible as well as minimize the long amount of delivery time of our items. Since this is a new venture for us in this market, we all know how important it is for us to be able to deliver the items to our customers as scheduled and ahead of schedule, not behind schedule. With us being held up with the processing of more and more paperwork with customs, this could make it extremely different for us to thrive in this market and be able to attract new and additional customers as well as keep the ones we already have. I think in order for us to get ahead and/or resolve the issues we’re having we need to arrange a meeting as soon as possible so that we are able to put our heads together and come up with some good ideas which will help us to minimize as much paperwork as possible that won’t continue to delay the delivery of our products to our customers. We, as a team, must work together...

Fall of Asclepius

...Fall of Asclepius By Harm 1 and Icrick Prologue Where should I begin? The apocalypse happened so fast. In less than a month, monsters infested every part of this world. People panicked, people died. They clawed at each other just to get out of all the infested areas around the world. There was problem about fleeing from infested areas. Everywhere was infested. There was no where anyone could go without encountering the walking plague. You know that phrase "War is Hell"? Well... it's dead wrong. War at least has some organization to it. What was faced in the last days... by last days I mean the last days of civilization not life; itself. What was faced was hell. Everyone went ape shit insane. Everyone was killing and raping each other into oblivion, because we were under attack by creatures that was so beyond our understanding! Geez, there were many names given to these undead. Some called them demons, others called them lost souls. With all these names, I found only one that was truly worthy; Zombies. It was a simple word. At the same time it was the most complicated word to enter any human language. I mean just think about it... You say that word to anyone before the outbreak and what would they think of? They would, think of those horror movies or comic books where, for no reason what so ever, zombies appear all around the globe in an instance. That's not how it happened for us. There were signs for over two months. It's just that no one took the time to put the...

...Hi Jessie’Leigh Smith, 17, on the 17th of June 1997, Born and bred in Cape Town, South Africa. Yes I am white, and no I don’t have giraffes or elephants in my back garden, but to be really honest I wish I did, unfortunately the world isn’t a wish granting factory. I am, if you haven’t realized by now, a photography loving, hair whipping, nail biting, toe pointing, tongue rolling, tea drinking, music listening, beach living girl with a pale face and pretty much zero confidence, I guess that’s about enough about myself for now. Why am I homeschooling? Well that’s not exactly a trick question, I’m home schooling because well quite frankly, I screwed up in mainstream schooling but that’s a whole other story for another day, that hopefully will never come. So besides the fact that I messed up, I am homeschooling because I am able to work at my own pace and not have to worry about competition between myself and other students, as well as the fact that, I actually get to spend 9 hours with people I actually want to be around, how kiff is that? Not bragging or anything, but our school is way better than any mainstream school. Diana’s homeschooling academy has not only given me a sense of responsibility and independence in a way, but it’s also given me hope. A hope that one day I’ll be able to achieve great things, things that I would have never been able to discover in any other environment. This school has also given me the opportunity to start finding myself, the true...

Bono Ted

...Chris Anderson asked me if I could put the last 25 years of anti-poverty campaigning into 10 minutes for TED. That's an Englishman asking an Irishman to be succinct. (Laughter) I said, "Chris, that would take a miracle." He said, "Bono, wouldn't that be a good use of your messianic complex?" So, yeah. Then I thought, let's go even further than 25 years. Let's go back before Christ, three millennia, to a time when, at least in my head, the journey for justice, the march against inequality and poverty really began. Three thousand years ago, civilization just getting started on the banks of the Nile, some slaves, Jewish shepherds in this instance, smelling of sheep shit, I guess, proclaimed to the Pharaoh, sitting high on his throne, "We, your majesty-ness, are equal to you." And the Pharaoh replies, "Oh, no. You, your miserableness, have got to be kidding." And they say, "No, no, that's what it says here in our holy book." Cut to our century, same country, same pyramids, another people spreading the same ideaof equality with a different book. This time it's called the Facebook. Crowds are gathered in Tahrir Square. They turn a social network from virtual to actual, and kind of rebooted the 21st century. Not to undersell how messy and ugly the aftermath of the Arab Spring has been, neither to oversell the role of technology, but these things have given a sense of what's possible when the age-old model of power, the pyramid, gets turned upside down, putting the people on top...

...Crime analysts are always trying to find new ways to apply their skills and hone their craft. The vast majority of us are thinkers; we are curious problem solvers who believe that our ability to benefit our agencies is limited only by the latitude we are given. It is understandable then that we should seek out more opportunities to apply our skills and make more positive impacts within our jurisdictions. It is this general attitude that led us to get involved in investigating cold cases. How We Got Started Mark had, for several years, been consulting with our Coroner’s Division as a forensic anthropologist. During this time he came to learn that there were numerous coroners’ cases in which the identity of the decedent was unknown. These cases were kept in three-ring binders on a shelf in the Sergeant’s office. Over the years, in the course of this forensic work, we would discuss these cases and the progress that was being made on them. The conversation usually ran along the lines of us asking “any luck with that 1980 homicide victim?” and the sergeant answering “well, we’ve gotten so many new cases that I haven’t been able to even look at it yet.” This went on for a few years and through two different sergeants. One day we, as a crime analysis unit, were brainstorming about how we could broaden our “client base”, as it were. We had been successful in integrating ourselves into our Investigations Bureau and had been involved in numerous...
