Stoning and Muslims The thought of stoning someone is just appalling to me. In the Stoning of Soraya M., Soraya was stoned because she was accused of committing adultery. Although they did not have proof of this actually occurring, she was stoned anyway. This presents a problem for me personally. Although I am not from a place that condones stoning women for committing adultery, I do not think that this is a morally right thing to do. Even if a woman actually did commit adultery, in my opinion she still should not be stoned to death in front of the entire town. I also think that the male children of the town should not be able to participate in this kind of violence especially if it is their mother that is about to be stoned to death. I think that this practice is dehumanizing to the Iranian women in the village and anywhere else that stoning occurs. If they want to punish the women for committing adultery or allegedly committing adultery, maybe they could come up with another form of punishment that does not include the women having to be put to death. I thought that it was very sad to see Soraya have to go through the things that she endured before her death. No woman should to endure a husband being abusive towards them, and then to have to find out that he is cheating on her with a much younger woman. I do not blame her for not wanting to give him a divorce. If that was me, I probably would not give him one either if I was not going to have anything to be able to support my children. I just do not see why everyone was so quick to assume that Soraya was committing adultery especially since they wanted her to take that job anyway. In my opinion, it was a setup from the beginning. Her husband knew that he could get everyone to believe the accusations that he made against her. The one person that could have stopped the entire thing decided not to. He just stood by and watched an innocent person get stoned to death. The fact that these women could be stoned should be done away with. It does not matter to me whether it is part of their culture or not. It is still morally wrong. My thought of Arab in America was that he should not have been ashamed of where his parents came from and what his nationality was. I understand that after 9/11 happened anybody that looked like the terrorists were being targeted. I think that it was unfair how some of people that the government had in their sights were treated. Just because someone resembles the people that committed the acts of terror does not mean that they are guilty of anything. I did not think it was right that some people were deported without a legitimate reason being given to them. By reading some of the things that Toufic had to experience, I can realize the hardships that they had to go through living in the United States after 9/11. I can only imagine what it felt like to get weird looks from people every time I walked into the room. Being judged by everyone as if you did something wrong is not a good feeling. One would seem like they are constantly under scrutiny from everyone. I do not know if I would be able to tolerate being under the watchful eye of the government every second of everyday for the rest of my life. Every Arab or Muslim is always going to be looked at suspiciously by everyone. I thought that Toufic's friend, who refused to accept the fact that he was Arab or Muslim, was basically brainwashed by what the media and everyone around him thought about them. I did not like the fact that he vehemently denied his nationality. In my opinion, I think that everyone should embrace where they come regardless of what is going on around them or what people may think about their particular nationality. He basically just changed everything about himself to be able to fit in with the white Americans around him. I just thought he was just a pathetic person for doing that. In the end, I liked the fact that Toufic ended up embracing his nationality. He finally came to terms with everything and realized that he did not have to fit in with everyone else around him. I liked that he embraced everything that came with his nationality and they way the people like him look. It was really brave of him to just be himself and not worry about what everyone thought. It left a good impression on me because the way that people looked at him, today some blacks still get looked at the same way but not so much in a suspicious way. Being at The University of Alabama, it was weird being the only black person in the class, and when I walked in, I would get looked at like “what are you doing here?” So I can somewhat relate to how he was feeling at the beginning, and that both of us are not ashamed of our nationality or ethnicity.
