Raised in Manhattan, New York, or better known as The City That Never Sleeps, a rapidly developing city that is constantly busy and human activity revolves around skyscrapers and taxis. Therefore, it has always intrigued me to discover the calm and peaceful Marina in Queens, New York. Constantly driving by the alluring Marina on my way to Queensborough Community College sets my expectations to be immense. Driving by the beautiful blue water always made me curious about entering the Marina which led me to discover it. My intention for discovering the enticing Marina is to find calm and peace in the quiet Flushing Bay. Highly fascinated by the bay side view the Marina provides most likely will be an enjoyable experience for me. My initial feelings for discovering the Marina is ultimately a captivating feeling. The sun was as bright as a burning star and the clouds were as clear as a crystal, the afternoon my adventure to the Marina began. Cruising inside the parking lot was refreshing witnessing the captivating beauty of the colorful blue water. Immediately after exiting my vehicle a swarm of seagulls were flying above me chirping as loud as horn. Proceeding to walk closer to the water the potent smell of nature emerged it smelled like a breath of fresh air. Essentially the taste of salt was in the air. Sitting down by the nearby wooden bench made me feel truly at peace with Mother Nature. The sun smiled at me while I relaxed on the bench witnessing the beautiful bright blue water flow in perfect symmetry reflecting against the powerful sun and the clouds.
Truly fascinated by the captivating blue water my adventure continues, excitedly walking down the cement pathway to the dock area to discover more fascinating sensations. On my journey to the dock there was a group of joggers that apparently jog throughout the Marina. There was one jogger who was sweating like a pig. There was also a couple of fishermen with many fishing rods and fishing equipment. They appeared to be amateur because neither of them have appeared to have caught a fish. While walking throughout the pathway there was a herd of ducks that were making a horrendous quacking sound it sounded like a male goose protecting his female. Constantly there will be airplanes departing or arriving at La Guardia airport located relatively close by to the Marina. The first couple of planes that will depart were a thrilling sight to see. However, after the continuous departures and arrivals it became highly annoying.
Finally arriving to the docks there was over twenty giant boats and yachts docked. It felt like I was in Manhattan again surrounded by huge material objects. The biggest boat was white and green it had three levels there was a huge label across the boat that said SKYLINE PRINCESS. This was a very intriguing boat, it greatly made me curious about what was inside the boat and all its wonders. There was one boat slowly sailing across the bay like a snail. There was a couple using a Yamaha jet ski the female was grabbing the male waist very tightly as he dashed throughout the water with the seductive jet ski. Truly fascinated by the technology and equipment that makes a boat/yacht/jet ski make me realize that a dream of mine will be to obtain one and cruise the enchanting seas. The sun or Helios named by the Greek started to set, the color of the sky and water became orange as the sun slowly came down. The weather changed in temperature very dramatically as it became night. The leaves waved in the wind as the cooling sea breeze puffs by. Mother Nature has told me it’s time to conclude my adventure as the sky slowly darkens.
Ultimately my experience at the Marina was enjoyable however, my expectations to find a peaceful and calm environment were disappointed. Initially looking forward to having a peace-loving experience, the reality is that the Marina is active and never quiet. The captivating feeling I initially had for the Marina vanished as I discovered the truth of the enticing bay. However, it was a refreshing experience as I felt closer to Mother Nature then I ever would being in Manhattan. Overall my experience was pleasant however, it just wasn’t what I was initially expecting.

Americans Sour on Trade

...Americans Sour on Trade (WSJ.com) By SARA MURRAY and DOUGLAS BELKIN This article begins by mentioning how there is a hostile view from the American public towards globalization. From the average America’s point of view, free trade and globalization has done nothing but hurt our economy and take jobs away from the US and bring them overseas. The latest poll shows that a slight majority of Americans see free trade agreements as s tool that has hurt the US more than it has helped. One of the most dramatic results of the survey comes from data that shows that even well educated people that tend to beneficiate from free trade and whose jobs are less likely to ever go overseas also feel that free trade agreements are hurting the US. When compared to 10 years ago when this survey was first done there has been a wide increase in the educated people that have changed their mind about free trade. This gap doubled from 24% to 50%. Politicians have now taken the issue into their own hands. Last week the senate passed a bill that would pressure China to float its currency in an effort to level the amount of imports that enter the country. While this may be a temporary issue that politicians use for their advantage in the next elections it is still an issue that more and more Americans are paying attention to as the unemployment rate still lingers near 10%. The article also mentions how China is beginning to replace Wall Street as the new “America’s villain.” Some think this happened...

I Picked a Sour Apple

...Jarrah P. Sanders I Picked a Sour Apple DeVry University I was super excited when my contract was up with US Cellular a little over a year ago. Don’t get me wrong US Cellular was a great carrier, but their phone selections and the quality of their phones weren’t all that great. I was excited to leave them because now I could get the Apple Iphone 4s. I knew a couple of people with the Iphone, and all they talked about was how great this phone was and the functionality of it. So of course, once my contract was up all I had to do was pick a carrier. I went with Sprint. I said goodbye to my Android and old carrier, and hello to my Iphone and new carrier. When I first got my Iphone 4s the Sprint Representative was kind enough to show me the basics of the phone, and told me I would learn more as I used and played with the phone. I remember going around to my friends and family saying “What is three inches tall and can sing, talk, and play games”? It’s my Iphone 4s. I knew that this was going to be my favorite possession. Then on April 14th 2011, The Iphone 4s proved to be my worst possession. For the first 7 days I had no complaints (this was my trial period by the way). If I didn’t like either the phone or the service I could return them within 14 days. That 8th day was when I started having internet issues. Anytime I tried to go onto the internet my phone would stay on trying to connect mode where the little circle would keep going round and round, but it would never...

Sour Grapes Case Study

...Case Study 8.1: Sour Grape Ice Cream Kelly Epps Reyes Grantham University Case Study 8.1: Sour Grape Ice Cream There are seven common quality tools that the Quality Ice Cream Company could use to understand and improve processes during a production run with the Sour Grape Ice Cream. Flow Chart, Run Chart, Process-Control Chart, Check Sheet, Pareto Diagram, Cause-and-Effect Diagram, and Scatter Diagram. Each of these tools helps to identify sources of variation and aids in the analysis, documentation, and organization of the information, which will leads to process improvement. The company should start with a flowchart or process map to visually represent relationships among the activities and tasks that make up a process. At high levels, process maps help you understand process complexity. At lower levels, they help analyze and improve the process. This will give the company a better idea of what is causing the rejections form happening. A scatter diagram should be made from the data, collected by the production operator. This will show the relationship between the run time and the viscosity of the ice cream. This will also help in finding out how long the ice cream should be mixed for to keep the ice cream from being too soupy or too stiff. From the data collected over the 10 days, it seems like it is not run for enough time, most of the time, resulting in a too soupy product. (Sower, V. 1996, pg. 201-202) After the best run time is determined, they...

Something Went Sour at Parmalat

...Something went sour at Parmalat The Italian dairy food corporation Parmalat SpA was founded by Calisto Tanzi in 1961 and grew to a global company. It had about 140 production centers, 36,000 employees and 5,000 contracted dairy farms (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parmalat). The dairy food giant defaulted on debt in November 2002 and filed bankruptcy in December 2003. It sounds ridiculous because Parmalat’s subsidiary in Cayman Islands had a $4.9 billion cash balance in Bank of America account. However, this account was falsified. Meanwhile, Parmalat also hid losses of $10 billion and increasing assets as high as $19 billion. The auditors did not show enough professional skeptism and due care during the audit. 1. What steps does an auditor ordinarily take when confirming cash balances held on deposits with financial institutions? The auditors usually require a confirmation letter from the financial institution to check if the account balance of bank agrees with the numbers on the company’s books. Auditing standards require direct communication that mailing the confirmation letter to the bank be sent by the audit firm and responded directly to the firm in case of any change by client. The confirmation letter also should be received by mail with post stamp and original documents rather than the facsimile in the case. If auditors believe the company’s internal control is not strong enough, they may: (1) trace the accounts to see whether the transactions are properly...

Analysis Of Trolli Sour Neon Worms

...Trolli candies have been a classic taste known to America since 1975 with their most popular seller, the Trolli Sour Brite Crawlers. These worm shaped candies are the perfect combination of tangy, sour, and sweet, which is why they have become so popular today. Although, do they have some competition? With the growing success of chain grocery markets like Kroger and Farm Fresh, new “generic” brands are coming out and are competing along name brand items. One of these items are the Kroger Sour Neon Worms. To the average gummy worm fan, the difference is almost nonexistent. The Kroger brand even has a better price, better overall nutritional value, and the same classic flavor or a Trolli Sour Brits Crawler. On average, the typical bag...

...Chicken “Benchiladas” 4-6 boneless, skinless chicken breasts 8 oz. reduced fat sour cream 8 oz. Ranch salad dressing flour tortillas (10-15) – we like Azteca, packs of 10 jar of salsa shredded Mexican cheese (I usually use close to 4 cups, I love cheese!) Directions: Cook chicken breasts by preferred cooking method until cooked through. Set aside to cool a bit. While chicken is cooling, mix up the sauce. In a large mixing bowl, combine half of the sour cream and half of the Ranch dressing. In a small bowl, combine the rest of the sour cream and Ranch dressing. Stir both until well combined. Shred or chop the cooked chicken and add to the large mixing bowl. Mix well with sauce. Preheat the oven to 375°. Grease a 9 x 13″ pan (and possibly another, smaller pan if needed). Take one tortilla and top with a little less than 1 tbsp. of the sauce from the small bowl. Spread over the tortilla in an even layer. Add some of the chicken mixture to the center of the tortilla. Top with salsa to taste. Sprinkle with shredded cheese, to taste. Roll up tortilla and place, seam side down, in the prepared baking dish. Repeat with remaining ingredients (usually makes 10-15 enchiladas). Bake in preheated oven for 25-30 minutes (30 for a crispier tortilla). Allow to cool a few minutes before serving. Sweet Nectar

...some sour, whereas others have no specific taste? Most fruits contain about four basic mixtures such as Starch, acids, cellulose and sugar or fructose, depending on the chemical compounds that are present in the fruit tends to contribute to the sweetness or sour taste of the fruit. It’s these same mixtures that stimulate a person’s taste bud so when they bite into a piece of fruit it would give them the indication that the product is sweet or sour. Sometimes, one of these combinations can be more over barren then the other. Such as, the acids can give a piece of fruit a more bitter taste compared to a piece of fruit that produces more fructose or sugar. Which, can become a more sweet taste and in some cases too sweet. When a person thinks of a certain type of fruit it’s naturally expected on how that fruit will taste. For example, when we think of a sweet fruit, we may image items such as: Peaches, Watermelons, and Oranges. This is because we assume that the content will contain more sugar then acid, which would lead us to believe our taste buds will welcome the product, more. However, when it comes to such items as lemons, grapefruits, and cherries, we know that these items contain more acid, then it would sugar, so we are aware that the taste would become more bitter, in response. Meanwhile, there are certain fruits that can be split down the middle of containing a sweet and sour taste. Such as: Apple, grapes, or tomatoes, which can be either sweet or sour. Now...

Sensory Adaptation

...when the perceived taste intensity of one product reduces the other different product. For example, water can taste sour or bitter after a salt adaptation. On the other hand, taste interaction masks the interaction between mixtures of different tastes (Lawless & Heyman, 1993). A solution of sucrose (sweet) and quinine (bitter) will taste less sweet than a pure sucrose solution of the same strength. According to Lawless and Heyman (1993), these sensations are distinguished by taste buds present on the tongue namely fungiform, circumvallate and foliate. They contain 30 to 50 taste receptor cells (TRCs). TRCs protrude hair-like cilia called microvillae to the surface of the taste buds that form the taste pore. This then comes into contact with the saliva. It is believed that flavoursome molecules from food bind to microvillae at the top of the taste cells. After binding, the taste-producing compounds (tastants) transfer sensations to the tongue and beyond by different pathways. For chemicals that produce sweet, umami and bitter tastes they use similar receptors called G- protein coupled receptors (GPCR). Basically, GPCR is an inner membrane protein receptor that is bound to a ligand, in this case sucrose, which causes the G-protein to dissociate that eventually open an ion channels resulting a cell to depolarise and send an action potential to the brain. While sour and bitter rely on ion channels. The citric acid in this case binds to an ion receptor that causes it to open and...
