...Spanish 102 Brownbag Lunch Discussion Reflection While I have only just begun my first semester studying at University of Maryland Baltimore County, I have already been exposed to numerous multi-cultural events on campus. One of the most informative was the “Brown Bag Lunch Discussion” with Speaker Luz Rivera Martinez. Going into this informal discussion I had little idea of what to expect, but once Martinez began to talk it was clear that she had come to tell the participants in the discussion about her culture and the main symbol of her people-corn. Truthfully, this topic seemed quite miniscule in severity compared to the many issues that surround Latin American cultures. But as the discussion went on, I understood corn wasn’t just a crop to be harvested to Martinez; it was the root of her existence. Martinez exemplified corn’s importance in Latin American society by describing its distinct role in every major, and minor, event. Whether the family was gathered to eat or there was a burial ceremony taking place, corn was present. This respect for corn was developed because it was a crop that built their culture and had been alive and growing, both literally and figuratively, for many decades. Anna Lisa explains that her dad was a second-generation Mexican, born and raised in Los Angeles, and her mom was born in Puerto Rico and raised in California. Raya herself was born and raised in Los Angeles in a Mexican neighborhood where she defined herself as Mexican. Only when she was with her grandmother and aunt from her mother’s side, she defined herself as Puerto Rican. When she went off to college, she had to answer what race she was and she had to pick “Latina”. She explains that it was the first time she had to think of that and put a label. She was confused because she did not have the physical aspects of a Latina, she did not know Mexico’s history or Puerto Rico’s, nor she knew how to speak Spanish. She felt like she did not have the “requirements” to be labeled as Latina but she couldn’t be labeled as an American because then she would be a “spic” (to Americans) or a “sell-out” (to Latinos). This author offers a case study focused on Spanish communication journals from a sample of 1182 articles published from 2007 to 2009. The article examines three variables in this sample: the number of non-Spanish scholars, the use of languages other than Spanish, and how often non-Spanish journals are referred to. The results show that (a) these journals find it difficult to attract foreign scholars, (b) open-language policies have had a limited effect, and (c) internationality is constrained to the Spanish geolinguistic region. She discovers that her boyfriend has been killed and her daughter Dot appears wandering out of the woods. Dot tells Maggie that Indians attacked them and took the older daughter Lilly. Lilly has been kidnapped by Indians and a male witch Indian. Maggie seeks help from the local sheriff who says they don’t have the resources and Maggie has to seek her father’s help. Joseph Mugnaini fulfills role number one, helping the viewer see the world in new and innovative ways by taking the idea of a knight (The Man of La Mancha) and changing his armor to newspaper. This idea is like taking an old iconic character, a knight, and putting a new spin on how one should interpret his role. Perhaps the knight is on fire because he is losing his battle, just like the main character in Bradbury's novel. In 1937, Pablo Picasso painted Guernica, oil on canvas. The Republican Spanish government commissioned the mural for the 1937 World Fair in Paris. Guernica is a large mural, twenty-six feet wide and eleven feet tall, and was placed at the entrance to Spain’s pavilion. Picasso did not do any work after receiving the commission until reading of the bombing of the Basque village of Guernica, in Spain. It was that attack, perpetrated by the German Luftwaffe, which inspired him. Guernica, however, is not a complete depiction of that event. The barrios, or neighborhoods, were home to thousands of Mexican immigrants who’d come to the United Sates in hopes of better lives for their children. The chavalitos, or children, of these people were first generation American and were Chicanos, that is, American children born of full-blooded Mexican parents. I always considered myself a Chicana; I never called myself Mexican or American. To me, this was normal because I had never been around people who were different. When I left my hometown, I realized that most people outside of the Mexican-American community did not fully understand what it meant to be a Chicano or had no idea what the word meant. The word Chicano traces back to the pre-Columbian era, when Mexico was still Meshico. It stems from Meshicano, an ancient Nahuatl word used by the Aztecs meaning “native.” The natives referred to themselves as Meshicanos, and even Shicanos, thus giving birth to the term “Chicano”. The term made its appearance in America, and was used to identify children born on American soil of Mexican descent. Our forefathers came to America seeking better lives and new opportunities for their children. With them, they brought their culture: music, food, customs and traditions.
