The Chronicles of Spin Class: A Guide to Survival
Come to spin class they said; it will be fun, they said.
This pretty much sums it all up. Considering I have never been a very coordinated person the task seemed daunting. However, sitting at a desk all day had done absolutely nothing for my physical fitness. That’s when I had the bright idea to join a gym after months of deliberation. I had the perfect plan. I would run on the treadmill and if I was feeling adventurous lift a few weights here and there. I was sadly, sadly mistaken.
My friend had a different plan for me. She mentioned that she had started going to this crazy intense spin class at my gym and really hated it but in a peculiar way was addicted which kept her going back for more. …show more content…
I wish someone would have given me some insight on a typical spin class, so this is where I come in. I’ve put together my top favorite (hysterical because I didn’t know if I should laugh or cry) moments in an attempt to educate anyone that is considering spin. Enjoy!
The make or break in spin usually starts with what type of teacher you have. I’ve heard horror stories of spin teachers taking on the role as drill sergeants (possibly Major Payne inspired) instead of that voice of encouragement. With that being said I was very thankful that my instructor courteous and respectful for “the deer in the headlights” …show more content…
First, there were the overachievers that did their best impersonation of Lance Armstrong just to impress the instructor. Then there are the ones that consider this to be some social hour and are either talking your ear off, texting or whooping it up for more punishment. Can we have a happy medium people!?!
At this point, the room wasn’t cold, and the icicles from my nose were defrosted. All the sudden sweat started pouring from all over. A great comparison was kind of like sitting in an oven overnight and feeling like a Thanksgiving turkey with the timer goes off. So much so I started overanalyzing and feelings of nausea set in. Is this normal? Will I die at spin? The thoughts were endless. The motivating chant that repeatedly was running through my head was….SWEAT LIKE A PIG TO LOOK LIKE A FOX!
The hour class had miraculously come down to 15 minutes left! This fact alone provided me the strength to power through. Well, that was until the inevitable happened. I had heard vicious rumors of push-ups and crunches being performed on a spin bike. (Is this considered a circus act?) Surely, there wasn’t enough time for that since the class was almost over…..that just won’t happen. All of the sudden I hear the firm orders of the instructor. Give me two sets of 20 rep crunches NOW! Oh yeah, adjust your resistance where it feels like you're running through mud!

...opportunities? Answer the same questions for USAToday.com. By conducting research and analysis Gannett determined that there were two trends/opportunities that he could take advantage of; one was that an increasingly short attention span among a generation nurtured on television and the other was that there was a growing hunger for more information. With this information Gannet made the newspaper’s primary mission to provide more news in less time. Research suggested that this paper should target achievement-oriented men in professional and management positions who were heavy newspaper readers and frequent travelers. Unlike the other companies/competitors who targeted upper America, Gannett’s company would target middle America- young, well-educated Americans who were on the move and cared about the news and current events. Gannett listened to what the readers wanted and ensured that USA Today would market just that. With this information in hand, Gannett capitalized on it by putting together a team of news, advertising, and production personnel staff from his daily news who developed, edited, published and tested different prototypes. From those prototypes three 40-page versions were sent out to about 5,000 professional people along with a response card for feedback. Marketplace feedback showed that readers liked the prototypes so the Board of Directors voted unanimously to launch the paper starting in the Washington and Baltimore areas. In September 1982, 155,000...

Abstraction from Society

...In lieu of traditional exams, I have decided to shake things up by asking you to design a final project that is part investigative journalism and part creative adventure. The idea is to produce a coherent nugget of information—or story—that traces the history of an ordinary object. The premise is based on our classroom discussions about the various ways discourse, power, consumption, and bodies are linked to gender, race, sexuality, class, religion, geography, and so on. My aim is to get you thinking seriously about the material conditions that produce commodities for everyday use (often hidden and obscured), as well as their emotional/cultural/social value (often produced and enforced by media, norms, discipline, and bodily surveillance). For example, when considering an ordinary pair of jeans, it is important to understand how their material history goes beyond simply when and where they were purchased. From production to consumption, a whole range of transnational labor practices (that primarily utilize the skills of young, low-income women of color) and advertising strategies (that primarily utilize the bodies and sexuality of young women) are deployed. Many of these practices violate international labor and environmental standards. At the same time, this ordinary pair of jeans may also contain a personal history that reflects emotional, cultural, or social values (a particular brand, a form of resistance to dress codes and cultural clothing norms, a gift from a beloved...

...History of Politics A Research Paper Presented to The class of Miss Rhoda Mae R. Navasquez Southern Cotabato Academy, Inc. In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirement for the Subject English IV by Jeison L. Omandam December 01, 2011 INTRODUCTION Political history is the description and analysis of significant political occasions, movements, thoughts, and leaders. Typically it is developed around the nation states. It is distinguished from but relevant to other areas of history such as economic history, social history, and military history. Usually, political history discusses events pertaining to nation-states and the political process in particular. As per Hegelian doctrine, Political History ‘is a perception of the state with a guiding force beyond the material benefits of its subjects: it meant that the state was the root factor of historical change’.  This differs with one, for example, social history, which predominantly discusses the events and lifestyles of common folks, or people’s history, that is historical account from the view point of a lay person. A study of political history typically centers on a single nation and its political change and aggrandizement. A few historians highlight the ever increasing drift toward confined specialization in political history over the course of recent decades: ‘wherein a college professor in the 1940s resorted to identify himself as a “historian”, by the 1950s “American historian” was the designation.’ Political...

Rationale Essay

...deliberately now, like following a training plan rather than making up workouts as I go. I think more about what I am doing specifically to persuade my audience. Before this term I would merely lay out my writing as it made sense to me. I have since realized the importance of tailoring my work to a specific audience. Of course, using appropriate language depending on the reader goes without saying. But only recently did I really begin to think about varying my use of rhetorical tactics; emphasizing appeals to ethos, logos, or pathos depending on who the indented reader was. This meant appealing more to pathos where I could and it was more audience-appropriate in my video project, and keeping the focus on ethos and logos in Project 1, which was research driven. The concept of Kairos was also an important tool I picked up this year. Framing an issue in terms of a relevant happening was not something that had previously really occurred to me as necessary, but using mass incarceration and the recent backlash against it to frame my projects nonetheless proved an effective method investing the reader in my argument. My writing process has also evolved. Fine-tuning and revision have taken on an increased prominence in my procedure, steps I began to understand the importance of late in my high school writing stage but never was able to effectively carry out until this course. When training for an important...

...tape, and Duct tape. Masking Tape   In 1923 3M employee Richard Drew visited an autorepair shop in St. Paul, Minnesota. 3M produced and sold sandpaper and Drew was in the shop to test out a new batch. Masking Tape  When he entered the shop employees were expressing disappointment at a failed attempt to paint a car in the two-tone style that was becoming popular at the time. Masking Tape    Typically how the effect was achieved was by painting part of the car in one colour while covering the other parts with butcher paper The butcher paper was usually held in place with a heavy adhesive tape. Unfortunately, removing the adhesive tape peeled away part of the paint job. THE IMPORTANT BIT:  Rather than just sympathise with his customers and move on, Drew decided to do something about it. Masking Tape   His company 3M had a lot of know-how in creating adhesives from making sand paper, so Drew figured he would try to make a paper tape to help solve his customer’s problems. Drew began experimenting with a range of materials and manufacturing processes to solve this problem. Teaching Kids About Money

...Z. Gutierrez III Excelsior College Introduction Where has the middle class gone wrong and so far in debt? A constant barrage of ads for products and services, a promise of easy financing, and the "Hollywood" spin on the advertisements all make spending hard to resist. Understandably an individual's attitudes, behaviors, and decisions ultimately affect their financial and social well-being; parents need to take responsibility for providing early instruction on financial literacy and responsibility. Because of gross overconsumption, student loans, and a lack of adequate parental guidance on financial literacy; children are facing a lifetime of debt and little to no understanding of how to handle it. Overconsumption Americans have made some progress, since the financial crisis of 2008, which is considered, by some economists, to be the worst since the great depression (Haverman, 2008). Debt is still nearly double than that of 1989 (Editorial Board, 2015) and private debt overshadows government debt by one hundred and fifty percent (Nutting, 2014). American debt is in part due to overconsumption. Our parents were largely one income families. They lived in modest homes, most drove one car and had minimal educations. Today’s upper class is constantly getting bigger and better homes and cars, and taking lavish vacations, and a strong desire for those amenities has driven some in the middle class to incur unreasonably high debt. Thomas Naylor, a professor emeritus of economics...

In addition green technology aims to reduce resource consumption and improve the disposal of electronic waste (e-waste). Energy star: Energy Star (trademarked ENERGY STAR) is an international standard for energy efficient consumer products originated in the United States. It was created in 1992 by the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy. Since then, Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Taiwan and the European Union have adopted the program. Devices carrying the Energy Star service mark, such as computer products and peripherals, kitchen appliances, buildings and other products, generally use 20–30% less energy than required by federal standards. In the United States, the Energy Star label is also shown on Energy Guide appliance label of qualifying products. Bridging the Valley of Death: Lessons Learned from 14 Years of Commercialization of Technology Education

...INTRODUCTION Interest in the commercialization of technology and high technology entrepreneurship has increased significantly in the past decade. It is apparent that in many increasingly knowledge-based economies, effective managers will need to be better trained in dealing with technologists and in creating business growth and advantage through commercializing technology. Technical education faces new demands as well. For example, the National Academy of Sciences (COSEPP, 1995) issued a committee statement calling for rethinking graduate education for scientists and engineers to include the skills to promote the commercialization of technologies that they create. As interest in commercialization of technology has increased, so has academic research interest in this area. For example, the Journal of Product Innovation Management recently published a 2 issue special topic volume on technology commercialization and entrepreneurship. Topics included a meta analysis of success factors in new venture creation (Song, Podoynitsyna, van der Bij & Halman, 2008), effects of uncertainty in new ventures (Loch, Solt & Bailey, 2008), evaluation of academic and corporate technology development processes (Golish,...

In the last two years, there is significant growth in the Business to Business (B2B) segment. Liberal Media

...liberal, leftist bias. This media which includes major traditional mainstream news networks and newspapers have had a long standing liberal bias. In the video that was viewed in class, which was made in 2001 the author Justin Lewis was even claiming that the media had been very heavy left bias in the years past. It has only continued to increase for the liberal bias throughout the years. This can be seen by not only the coverage, but also by the past publicly expressed of political opinions of most major reporters, anchors, producers, etc. The dictionary defines a liberal as a political or social philosophy advocating the freedom of the individual, parliamentary systems of government, nonviolent modification of political, social, or economic institutions to assure unrestricted development in all spheres of human endeavor, and governmental guarantees of individual rights and civil liberties. It also defines a leftist as an outlook or specific position that accepts or supports social equality, often in opposition to social hierarchy and social inequality. It usually involves a concern for those in society who are disadvantaged relative to others and an assumption that there are unjustified inequalities, which right-wing politics views as natural or traditional that needs to be reduced or abolished. In this paper I will affirm the argument that is made by Mr. Lewis in favor for a liberal media. In the beginning of the video Lewis shows an example on how one little change can make people...
