Spelling Deficiency

... Nueva Extension, Surigao City Action Research In English Spelling Deficiency Researchers: Jonalyn Y. Vitorillo Kristene Merie B. Danduan Carla Saragoza Sheena Marie Juntilo Jorama D. Bato Ethel P. Dekit Kirby P. Cosep Catherine C. Borres Lorelie Labrador Mrs. Eleine Q. Alipao English Adviser Abstract Spelling is seen as an indication of status and education. Those who are not good at spelling often feel embarrassed about their lack of skill and are unhappy about allowing others to see what 3 they have written. As a result, they may be reluctant to write at all. Since spelling is only necessary as part of writing, any instructor who has students write in his/her class is helping students develop their spelling .For in order to develop spelling, Pupils must be involved in an active writing program in all areas of the curriculum, not just spelling. Therefore, it is crucial that spelling development is not perceived to be developed solely in an English class. This research would also be of benefit to other researchers since "Current research has challenged the traditional notion that spelling must be taught in a rote manner focusing...

Chicano English Dialect

...Chicano English is a fully formed English dialect spoken by Mexican Americans in California (Penfield). It is a contact dialect and is usually acquired by second or third generation Latinos during their language acquisition stage. Chicano English (CE) is not “learner English” or Spanglish, and it is the native language of most speakers. Chicano English has a distinct sound, people who are not familiar with it can mistake it for being an accent or thinking that Spanish is their first language. However, Chicano English speakers are mostly monolingual, and know little Spanish. There are misconceptions that educators can have about the CE community. For example, thinking that those who speak CE lack proficiency in English, believing that their...

A Native American Language

...Hawkinson November 18, 2014 Stage 5: Language Autobiography; Algonquian Language A Native American Language Language of any kind helps us to define or shape our culture or society. For thousands of years, we have used language as a way to communicate, trade, or to pass along our history with stories and legends. We have seen how language can grow and develop, and how it is affected by other cultures or societies. Language is always adapting just like everything else where it will flourish in some cases and disappear in others. Native Americans, such as the Powhatan Confederacy of Virginia, once thrived along the Hudson Bay area. This Confederacy consisted of twenty-eight to thirty-two different tribes, who all spoke a dialect form of the Algonquian Language. The Algonquian Language originated from the Algic Language. This language bade consisted of forty-four different sub-languages, all of which fell under the sub-language Algonquian except for two (Thompson, 2014). The Algic Language originated from Proto-Algonquian, which is the original form of all Algonquian Languages, and dates back 3,000 years (Thompson, 2014). Currently the origins of where this language first originated from or how it came about are unknown. Europeans became the first to encounter this language around 1584, when settlers began arriving in the New World (Rountree, 2014). The Algonquian Language consisted of several different sub-languages; to which different forms were spoken; dependent on the region...

The special feature of language on which Chomsky focused was its productivity. Possessed with a grammar, or syntax, humans can...

Malaysian English Language Acquisition

...Based on the theories of first and second language acquisition, how do you think the average Malaysian student learn English? Discuss your reasons. Introduction Young children are natural language acquirers; they are self-motivated to pick up language without conscious learning, unlike adults. They have the ability to imitate pronunciation and work out the rules for themselves. The idea of “English is difficult” does not occur to them unless it’s suggested by adults, who themselves probably learned English academically at a later age through grammar-based text books. The advantages of beginning early Young children are still using their individual, innate language-learning strategies to acquire their home language and soon they also use these strategies to pick up English. Young children have time to learn through play-like activities. They pick up language by taking part in an activity shared with adults such their parents and teachers. They firstly make sense of the activity and then get meaning from the adult’s shared language. Young children have more time to fit English into the daily programme. School programmes tend to be informal and children’s minds are not yet cluttered with facts to be stored and tested. Children who have the opportunity to pick up a second language while they are still young appear to use the same innate language-learning strategies throughout life when learning other languages. Young children who acquire language rather than consciously...

North Frisian as an Endangered Language

...North Frisian as an Endangered Language Despite the North Frisian language being classified as an endangered minority language confined to a small region in Northern Germany and having fewer speakers annually, as newer generations are born and learn more established Germanic dialects, there is a strong movement dedicated to preserving the language from the German government as well as international organizations through the implementation of academic programs, transcription of manuscripts, dictionaries, and literature, and extensive assistance from existing native speakers, which intends to maintain an active interest in and use of the language. A language becomes endangered when its speakers no longer pass it onto the next generation. If there are no more native speakers, the language then becomes known as a “dead language.” A language only becomes extinct when there are no existing speakers of it. Although there are no established guidelines on how to identify whether or not a language is endangered, there are several indicators that are examined to determine if one is endangered: the number of living speakers, the mean age of native and fluent speakers, and the percentage of the youngest generation acquiring fluency with the language in question. These three criteria each influence how a language is evaluated, and one indicator does not always necessitate the other two. Endangered languages are not always languages with few speakers. Even though small communities are...
