Spring Shortening

Spring shortening....

Many of us, “Springer” airgun enthusiasts have at some time, needed to replace a main spring in our guns. Some would leave the job to a gunsmith, which is always the best plan if you don’t feel confident or competent to do the job yourself, but there is a certain feeling of deep gratification when YOU work on YOUR rifle, to set it apart from the others.

Fitting an aftermarket spring isn’t a difficult job for anyone with some general handyman skills, the right tools and a little knowledge about how the spring gun is put together.
The replacement spring will undoubtedly change the shooting characteristics of the gun, not least the muzzle energy. You will see the disclaimers on the spring packaging, saying that in fitting this spring the muzzle energy may exceed the 12ft.lb legal limit....!
So, if this happens with your new spring, you will need to shorten it.

Before we look at how to do that, perhaps we should try to understand a little more about the spring material and how it responds to the inevitable application of heat at the shortened end.

Spring Steels.

There are many different types of material that can be used in spring production. Each material has different compositions and properties. Steel spring material is typically 0.45 – 0.90% Carbon, with additions of Manganese, Silicon, Chromium and Vanadium. In general, the more the alloy content, the larger the diameter of wire or rod can be hardened through the entire section.
Because of the small diameter wires used in manufacturing airgun springs, there is no need to add cost by using highly alloyed steel. Typically, small diameter wire coil springs will be made from “Carbon” spring steel, or “Silicon-Manganese” spring steel. The composition of the steel wire (particularly the Carbon content) makes it able to respond to heat treatment. We can make it harder or softer, by a combination of controlled heating and cooling cycles.
For a spring steel to give us the elastic properties needed, it is necessary to first harden, then temper the steel.
Hardening involves heating the steel wire to between 870 – 930oC (cherry red/orange colour), then quenching in oil. The rapid cooling causes microstructural changes, resulting in a very hard and brittle material. In this condition, the spring steel is useless. To make the steel function as a spring, being able to compress without breaking, we will need to temper the steel, by re-heating within the range 425-500oC for a period of around twenty-thirty minutes. Effective tempering is both time and temperature dependent and “refines” the microstructure bringing about a reduction in the hardness and increase in the toughness, thus achieving that optimum combination we are seeking.
Airgun springs tend to be made from spring wire that is pre-hardened and tempered to optimum properties. Spring material needs to have the capacity to store energy by elastic deformation, so the metallurgical condition of the steel wire is of huge importance. Too hard and the spring will almost certainly result in brittle fracture; too soft and the spring coils will suffer “plastic” deformation when compressed, causing the coils to collapse.

Back to the job in hand...

You will have established from your chronograph, just how “Hot” your gun is with the new spring fitted. You will decide how many coils you will need to remove. This is somewhat down to trial and error as springs for different guns will vary.

When coils are removed to reduce the free length and consequently the “ESC” (Energy Storage Capacity) of the spring, the cut end will result in an “Open End.”(picture?)
This open end will need to be closed and then ground so that the end of the spring sits flat on the spring guide face, or at the bottom of the piston.(picture?) I have seen first-hand, how some very respected air gun manufacturers, or their UK agents, have reduced the length of what was an over powered spring and left an open end with just a small, flat “foot” ground onto the wire end! (picture)This is obviously not good practice and can result in scoring of the spring guide mating face, so a closed and ground end will be needed. To achieve this, the spring wire is heated then pressed firmly and squarely against a flat plate to collapse the end coil to make a closed end. Then the closed end can be carefully ground (I do mine on a vee block, dressing the closed end on the side of a grinding wheel) to make a flat face so that the spring can now stand vertical.
Many tuning guides will advocate polishing the closed ends of the spring to reduce end-load friction and consequently the torque generated when the spring is released; it’s probably marginal in improving the overall efficiency of the spring, but we are always seeking to reduce recoil on our spring rifles...aren’t we?

Sounds quite simple...?

At this point, I need to put my Metallurgist’s hat on again to warn against the apparent misguided information out there on how to do this properly..!!
You will remember that I earlier talked about hardening and tempering springs so that they are useful and not prone to brittle fracture.
When we heat the wire to collapse the open end, there is no need to heat more than a small area of one coil. Too often, the belief is that the whole of the last couple of coils will have to be bright red hot to collapse the end. Then, it is well known that springs are “hardened“ so, we dunk the end in old engine oil. The result...?, a very hard, very brittle end to your spring..!! It may look to have done the job, but we have not considered what metallurgical changes we are making to the steel. Didn’t I say that a hardened spring was...useless? Most times, you will see how useless when you use it in your rifle, only to find that the last two coils break off.
You know what was needed right? .......Tempering of course!
The problem is, to temper effectively the material will need to get up to 400oC minimum, for twenty minutes to remove the brittleness and render the hardened coils free from risk of brittle fracture.
Do we all have a furnace available to do this...sadly, not.
Another misinformed view is that having quench hardened the end of your spring, it is good practice to polish the end coil and warm it up with the blow torch until the polished steel turns blue. These temper colours depict the colour of the oxide film that forms at different temperatures. Blue temper represents a temperature between 290-310oC. Then a quick quench in oil or water and the steel is tempered. Sorry guys, it won’t be tempered anything like enough to prevent brittle fracture. Remember I said that the tempering process was both time and temperature dependent..? Well what I just described is neither hot enough nor for long enough to get the metallurgical changes we need.

There is an alternative solution....

I said previously, that there is no need to heat more than a small area of the wire to close the end of the coil. Maybe more surprisingly, you don’t need to heat to red hot either to soften the wire sufficiently to get the plastic deformation at the right point to close the end of the spring. The tensile strength of the wire is greatly reduced at temperatures well below red heat and more importantly, below the temperature that those microstructural changes take place that can give us that nasty.. “hard stuff!”

I have found most success with using the brazing attachment on my butane gas torch. The flame can be adjusted to a narrow, one inch length, with a clear blue area towards the tip of the flame. (photo?)
Play the blue (hottest) area of the flame on the first coil, at roughly 180-270o (half to three quarters of the coil) from the cut end of the wire.(photo?)
When the area gets to a dull red heat (650-700oC), you can quickly collapse the open end against a suitable flat surface. Let the end of the spring cool in air. This is a good time to go for a cup of tea.
If the coil doesn’t flatten completely, you can repeat the process. I’ve never had to repeat the process, but you won’t do any harm if you keep the hot area localised.
Finish by grinding the end flat, then use 240 grit, wet and dry on a flat sanding block to get a smoother finish. Those of us that seek perfection, will now polish the flat face with metal polish.....I don’t know how much benefit it brings, but it makes me feel good about my gun!

Summary on Nestle

...Company has operated a plant in Michigan, which manage by Brendan O’Rourke. Currently, they are producing Ice Mountain bottled-water. To add to this, Nestle wants to increase the amount of water pump so that they can create a bigger market of bottled-water. However, Michigan Citizens for Water Conservation (MCWC), a Mecosta local resident group, worry that the over pumping groundwater will have an effect towards the environment, and consequently, they wanted to stop the Ice Mountain bottled-water plant. Therefore, the main issues for Nestle can be summarized as listed below: • The Nestle company pumps groundwater, but the ownership of groundwater is controversial. However, there were many arguments regarding Nestle pumping the water from the spring, yet a MCWC’s (Michigan Citizens for Water Conservation) lawyer – Jim Olson agree and explain it under the doctrine of reasonable use which states” the owners of a stream can use its water as long as it’s in connection with their land”. In addition, David K. Ladd argues that the water that was put in the product is no longer water; it is considered a food and is regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. • In 2003, Nestle was ordered by Michigan state court judge – Lawrence Root to turn off the pumps due to Michigan climate began to change. In addition, a year after Jennifer M. Granholm (the new governor for Michigan, who stopped the expansion of new bottled-water plants) proposed the Water Legacy Act (to protect all state’s groundwater)...

The dancer executes each movement with incredible grace and control. She really captivates her audience and draws them in emotionally. She incorporates ballet incredible technique that is strong but at the same time she makes it look effortless. Her musicality adds to the drama of the piece and shows her true talent. Her port a bras are perfect, the way that they move with each step and add to the complexity of this variation. The port a bras also add to the lines of her body and I like how her hands, in a way, are presenting her feet.. Her legs reach and point while she's in the air in such a graceful way. She also has a great sense of her center, which helps her in her turns and jumps while she moves in a circle. The piece also goes from fast movements to slow and even incorporates isolated movements, which allows time to show cases her talent. She performs one arabesque position into another with out coming off point, then does it again without taking a molecule of sharpness off of her skill level. Overall I think that the ballerina's performance in this piece was incredible. Its inspiring to watch, for someone like me who its trying gain more knowledge and skill in ballet and dance in general. Springtime Sexism

...Nico deveber Professor Gabrielle Houle DRST 2617 10 October 2014 Springtime by María Irene Fornés is a play that follows the lives of Rainbow and Greta, two lovers living in a small city in 1958. Springtime brings up many issues on love, power, and desperation; especially in regards to poverty and sexism. Through a close reading of the text, it will become clear that this play requires its audience to understand how poverty and sexism intersect in regards to oppression and privilege in society. Poverty is a clear topic in Springtime, it is first presented in the second scene wherein Greta is ill, and Rainbow is forced to steal in order to afford her treatments: “I must do it. You’re ill and we must take care of you.” (83). In this scene Greta begs Rainbow not to do something that could endanger her, and Rainbow insists that she must to be able to afford her treatments. This is the first of many scenes in which the issue of poverty is presented to the audience. In another scene, Greta tries to get Rainbow to throw away the watch she has stolen, and again Rainbow cannot oblige because, “We need the money. For you. To make you well.” (83). Rainbow and Greta are struck with a terrifying reality in which they must choose between Greta’s health, with the cost of sin (and real-world consequences, as displayed through later scenes) and letting Greta fall ill. Rainbow is driven to blackmail and prostitution, taking nude photos with men in desperation to pay for Greta’s treatments. While...

Code of Ethichz

...has been brought to my attention that during the unionized strike one or more employees have sabotaged a machine within the bottling plant. The infraction came from an unknown chemical, which was put into the machine. This has now contaminated 120,000 bottles of our spring water. From what we have found the chemical is very minute and will cause no harm to consumers unless the water is drank in excess. This has caused a huge dilemma for us as a company on the financial end. Recalling 120,000 bottles of natural spring water will be costly as well as desterilizing the machine again. However, we have built our pride and reputation on having pure natural spring water and in my opinion I would say we have to recall the contaminated water no matter how minute the contamination is. If even only one person got sick or suffered a long term illness due to this it could close us down all together. With that being said, I would advise that we get the recall notice out in a rush, and a cleaning crew in to clean that machine and check the others before we resume daily operations of production. I understand this putting us in a financial crunch and may take a while to recover from. The fact is, we sell only pure natural spring water and this is not pure so we cannot sell it or we cannot claim to sell pure water. Not to mention, if there is any risk of someone becoming ill from our negligence, OSHA can fine us much more then we will lose from the recall if not shut our doors completely. I highly...

Consumer Prefrences

...consumer’s preferences on a particular good. In addition, it can relate to one of the determinants of demand that cause a shift in the demand curve. For example, in winter, people are highly interested to wear or buy very warm clothes than in summer. Therefore, when people feel cold, the demand for warm cloths is increasing, which mean that the demand curve is going to shift out. However, in Summer, people feel hot so their interests in warm cloths is going to decrease , which leads to a shift in of the demand curve. Another example of the impact of weather changing on consumer preferences is the use of means of transportation. In very snowy days, people are demanding more to ride a bus or a car than to walk, but in nice weather such as in late spring, people are less interested in using means of transportation.so the demand for the use of means of transportation increases in snowy days that make the demand curve to shift out. While in very nice weather, people take advantage of the weather so they prefer to walk. With that, the demand for using means of transportation is going to decrease and leads to a shift out of the demand...

The Last Spring

...The last spring I remember once I had someone very dear to me, someone that left deep traces in my life, someone that would live in my heart forever, someone that I will never forget. In order to preserve the memory of this angel, a divine human creature, I devote this story to my friend because her innocence and her fragility has been inspiring me for years. I hope that many people will understand the hidden message once they've read the story. It was a wonderful spring dawning. The air was poisoned with nothing else but the strong smell of the spring flowers and the joy of the birds' songs. We were holding our hands and happily as happy can two little girls be, we were bouncing and jumping in the park. Spring could be seen in our eyes, sunshine could be recognized in our smile. It seemed to us like we were flying in the air as two colourful butterflies from a flower to a flower, each of them more and more beautiful, each of them more and more attracting, as if they were the last days of our lives and each of them was more and more challenging. Smiling faces everywhere, people could envy our happy childhood reflected in the deepness of our sight. We were so excited in those spring rainbows above our heads without knowing that this would be our last spring together, remembered afterwards as the coldest one and the darkest one in my life. It's funny how Marta and I met at a beach resort. We could never imagine that we were going to be inseparable friends. Although...
